I thing that yiddish should become one of the officials languages of Israel. All jewish children should learn it at school, all around the world, and even many no Jews. Why not ? I am not a Jew, bur if I was, I would be a militant and a strong advocate of the cause of yiddish.. Let us not forget that before the war 39 - 45, yiddish was the most spoken jewish language in the world. Bund ( jewish socialist workers party) was rignt to fight for yiddish as the national language of jewish people.
Ich spreche Deutsch. Ich kann absolut verstehen Sie in Jiddisch. Aber ich stimme mit Ihnen überein, dass es eine separate und gültige Sprache ist. Ich bin ein Jude, ich glaube an die Bedeutung der Erhaltung der Sprache. Danke!
I really think that if Yiddish is to survive as a language for those wishing to learn it, it needs to get rid of most of the germanic elements. A pure yiddish with mostly hebrew type words and slavic ones will be the cure of calling this a "diyalekt fun Daytsh"
But then it wouldn't be Yiddish, it would be something else entirely. The concept of "dialect" and "language" are really fuzzy and change with the person speaking. Yiddish is a cousin of standard German and real close to some varieties of Bavarian and Allemanish. If you went just on mutual intelligibility and went back 400 years it may have been the same language even . But the cultural environment and world in which Yiddish existed, was distinct, so it's definitely a different language.
@ikhveysnit Perhaps this isn't as much of a joke as one would imagine, but the difference between a language and a dialect is that the former has an army.
Yiddish is very close to Schweizerdeutsch (Swiss German) and Austrian even as spoken today. More so than modern German. You need to bear in mind that Yiddish is essentially Medieval High German and was first spoken in the Rhineland. It is a Germanic language; like it or not. This is part of the Yiddish heritage ... it's the way it is. Besides, what is so bad about the fact that is a German language?
I'd hope so, lol. But not too much. Yiddish with a German accent can be like nails on a chalkboard. There are German dialects that also sound a heck of a lot like Yiddish but the words are a lot more different in those dialects than even standard German.
I'd prefer a Ukrainian/Russian accented Yiddish over germanized accented Yiddish. Actually, when Yiddish uses its slavic pronunciation over germanic, it is completly different than hochdeutsch.

An amazing language with a lot of German words. Believe it or not there are even some Yiddish and Hebrew words used in German like schlamassel and meschugge.

But if Yiddish were "de-Germanified" it would become something totally different. After all the language is more medieval German than anything else.

@Nadav34 We should bring them both together and let Yiddish come into its own!
