mr. Haggard...just great and will last forever...i saw him in new jersey in the summer of 2005, just great, he made the opening to Bob dylan, what a concert...unforgerable. tks. for posting.
k this is what i talk about good music. these new "stars" have no heart and barely any talent. you gotta know somebody who knows somebody who knows somebody. i'm tired of this no talented artists who think they are all that.
@agm4007 this is the same kind of language my parents used about rock and roll in the fifties. we should learn to respect each others music. listen to what we like and not listen to what we don't like, live and let live
Another #1 hit for Merle Haggard on the Country & Western charts. It was the 219th #1 C&W song of the Rock Era. It also hit #2 on the Canadian RPM Country Tracks charts.
You won't see some half assed "country" singer perform any song like this! Merle, Buck, Porter, etc., blows all the new country acts away! Hell, they even play Johnny Cash on alternative stations in Ireland!
this song is how my life was my dad was blind but could play any instrument you could think of my mom sang and i played the bas. he made his life by playing music R.I.P DAD love you
this song i have been listening too since i was two. its always been my favorite song. and everyone is right cause what the hell happened to country music.......
Merle used to stop in Ft. Smith Arkansas on occassions to play and rest in the mountains. My father had a supper club in the 1200 block of towson ave. The clubs name was Big John's supper club. Merle would knock and the door would open and he say "Big john I need a steak and something to drink ,yesterday I have a sondg and fifty cents". Of course there was no charge ,Merle made sure his manager tipped every employee from front to rear when the tab was actually 12.00 dollars..
I remember as very small boy listening to this one and "Mama's Hungry Eyes" and they were among my very favorites and remain so to this very day. I agree that real country is ripe for a comeback and there are many artistes out there who can bring it back - if they will all just stand up to this corporate fascist establishment that takes pop music and puts a little bit of fiddle and steel on it and calls it country. Let's all stand up to them!
man the sad thing is this kind of music sang by the hag along with the possum and ol' hank would never have chance on the radio today we need a national radio station that played the good country and not the crud of today just the good ol' true blue country music. hell I grew up on the music out on the farm this was all you heard. long live the classics of country since they killed country music
An 18 year old Haggard fan from Ireland, and I never knew he sang this song until I typed Daddy Frank into youtube and Merle came up as a suggestion. I used to hear this on the radio and just wanted to hear it again, I had no idea he sang it
It's a real shame in my view that "modern" country is just 70's rock and roll put to a country beat!! The CLASSIC Country is RIPE for "new" artists to bring it back!! Lets hear a new rendition of Lead Belly or Hank Snow!! "The classics" or "traditional country" is almost or past 40 years old now.. "The kids" need a revival!!!
It was in 1972 that i first remember hearing this song. I couldn't get enough of it. I was already a hag fag @ Sixteen. I got to go to his sixtieth birthday party with Glen Keener. The best show i ever saw.
This song was written about the Maddox Brothers and Rose. I'm sure you've heard of them seeing how you're such a music critic.. They were on the opry along about the time Jumpin' Bill Carlisle and The Fruit Jar Five were popular. Oh, for your information, they were pretty good..
brings back some memories from listening to my dad playing this song when i was kid when we were logging timber in penybryn north wales. this is proper music that has a meaning not like the manufactured pop shite of today ye har
Used to drive my mates mad with this in our local pub! They were in to rock and stuff and this song (and Glenn Miller too!) used to really p*ss them off in the '70's - sorry guys! lol Ah, for the old style 'Juke-box'.........
My Dad and Mom used to play this song when I was growing up we all sang along , it was special to us our last name is Frank , My parents are both gone now but the memories are just like yesterday.
This is one of those songs that ALWAYS lifts my spirits. It gives me goosebumps while joining in with the refrain. The ladies singing the harmony and melody parts did a nice job.
i was about 12 13 years old when i started listing to the oldies and daddy frank was one of my favorites and im 23 now and i still love my oldies and it will never stop.merle haggard is one of my best

Daddy Frank played the guitar and the french harp,
Sister played the ringing tambourine.
Mamma couldn't hear our pretty music,
She read our lips and helped the family sing.
That little band was all a part of living,
And our only means of living at the time.
And it wasn't like no normal family combo,
'Cos Daddy Frank, the guitar man, was blind.
