@leedsfanalways If you'd watched/played/read about the series, you'll know that the "Ghost-like dude" is the G-Man. The ending is easy to understand. That portal blew up, presumeably killing Breen and, as a cliff hanger, presumeably killing Alyx and possibly Gordon. You'll find out why it cliffhanged in Episode One.

It's an amazing game and a little disappointing that it gets so overshadowed by it's sequel. Play Half Life 1 and Half life 2. Seriously, the Prince of Persia is nothing compared to this guy. This man is known only as the "G-man". The G-man/Gman is a person (what exactly he is, no one really knows) is a mysterious figure that seems to be the most powerful entity in the Half Life universe. He is pretty much all knowing and is able to not only stop time, but teleport at will. He also seems to be unnoticed by everyone besides Freeman, but also looks after Freeman.
