Why are people moaning about them using one of Aphrodite's Child's chord progressions? The Verve made no secret of the fact they are huge Aphrodite's Child fans and highly influenced by them.
This song was playing the first time I got high. I was 16 and I was smoking in my bedroom by myself like 10 years ago before 9/11. This song brings back so many memories.
@IndyWatch my first time i got high only like 6 years ago much after 9/11 cause im not old like you =P i walked in my house and my dad had this song blasting I loved it haha
6 dislikes? Seriously? You people either had a group epilepsy fit and didn't know what you were clicking or you need to be checked into the nearest psych ward asap . . .
@Daltonn0810 Because of the same letters? Haha. This is modern, the other stuff is old, not saying it' not good tho. But you go and live in the 60s. I prefer this song. =)
Why resort to people who dislike a tune as having a medical problem? Are you saying that epileptics have bad taste in music? What's your considered diagnosis of cancer patients? Are they Justin Bieber fans?
A friend of mine is epileptic, a Verve fan and a lover of this particular song. I think that invalidates your hypothesis.
I love the Verve but this chorus is a direct and knowing rip from Aphrodite's Child's song called 'The Four Horsemen.' Check it out and expand youuur heeeeaaaaddd, maaaaan.
I would say an homage rather than a rip. The Verve have been pretty open about their love for the gods of Greek psychedelia.
Also the title "The Rolling People" comes from an Aphrodite's Child song called "Altamont" I believe. I bought the 666 album recently and you are right it's a work of genius like nothing I have ever heard. I hope Demis Roussos is getting royalties for it!
the drum beat leads you into a rock saga, then sends you into euphoria man, bloody awesome tune, ashcroft, pure genius, doe's not even have to try to write song's,it just flows, comes natural, I Frigennnn love this song. Northern Soul and Urban Hymns, definite best albums..And since 1999 not one group nor album comes close to this guy....thanks so much for uploading this, well appreciated mate..again what a drum roll to a classic
the verve are a trillion times better than Oasis, these guys play there instruments better and the songs have more interesting advanced music changes to those bunch of dead eyed potato heads :)
@Lin6161 I agree but these are two completly different people with different approaches to music but as a lead singer, Ashcroft can write his own music but that does not make Liam Gallagher a bad singer even if he wrote less songs than brother Noel.
Run to the Sun...Newquay 96?97?98???????????????? LOL!!!! Everyone had radio 1 full blast this on at Hiegh Hall live in Wigan....... The Verve brought that gig 200 miles down the coast... What a moment in HISTORY!!!!!!!!
Only the opening riff...and do you really think they ripped it off? There is so much out there now, it's hard not come up with some cords copied from somewhere. In an interview Paul McCartney said it's becoming a bigger issue every year with song writers and since they were deep pockets getting sued for it was one of his and Lennon's fears.
True, it's "only the opening riff", as you said. Still, an obvious similarity ---intended or not --- is an obvious similarity. Even George Harrison couldn't escape that. I assume you know what that comment refers to. I've always felt that Clarence Haskins should've received at least a co-writing credit for this tune and that The Verve have been fortunate the last 12+ years that he/his attorney hasn't been on the ball about this sort of thing like Allen Klein was.
was any of you eds at the gigs oasis shared with the verve back in 93 with a northern soul it blew oasis back to fookin burnage no ammount of coke could save noel and his pubrock .verve man steam roll ya!!!
yeah i was, but noel being the star he is came out on stage at the gig i was at and quoted " how the fuck are we suposed to follow that " even oasis knew that the verve were the truth!!!!
This song was either a tribute to or a ripoff of the end/chorus of "Four Horsemen" by Aphrodite's Child, and the intro of Funkadelic's "I Got A Thing"...
@stmirren1877 Yeah I am glad they polished up that, for our times, boring tune. Let them steal all they want, they're some of the best modern musicians and surely did honor to them by getting inspired by their song.
What is the best drug to take, while listening to The Verve? It's ammmmazing on marijuana. I always hear something different.. Like, last night I was really focusing on Pete's drumming on "The Rolling People". It's so fucking good!
Music is awesome on weed. Listen to RADIOHEAD after burning one. You will hear some serious shit. THE VERVE is completely badass!!Rock on!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I always thought The Verve was a one hit wonder until I heard this song, plus the others on the CD. They're all amazing! This is my favorite track on the CD, besides "Bittersweet Symphony".
