I appreciate that he underlines the importance of beeing realistic and that he debunks some superstitions about his person. And I like that he stresses the importance of secular ethics. But I could not be as mild about religion. Everyone can claim religion for everything because it has no base in facts and reason. Religion as I know it is mostly a mixture of egoism, fraud, wired traditions, superstitions, stupidity and mental illness.

Dalai Lama is preaching about goodness and peace to all people and I want to believe he is a good man but how come we never hear how were lamas who preceeded Dalai Lama..
What I read about previous lamas is, they were harsh leaders, taking high money and goods percentage of their poor Tibetian people, brutally punishing those who couldn't pay (killing and cutting their arms off), taking with violence beautiful girls from their families and kept in some kind of harems, and so on..

Tibet was a vassal state_ under Mongols and Manchu and was a de'facto independent state when Mao sent the troops in.
There where hardly any Chinese in central Tibet prior to Mao's invasion.
Tibets culture, written language, religion, arts etc are very distinctive from China's and

@ramterry I have a book in which he states he eats meat for health reasons, but only does it sparingly....he used to be a vegetarian but then had to stop as it was creating a dietry imbalance (guess cos each persons dietry intake is different)

To attack him for a Monastic tradition that was set in place before he was even born is to take the path of least resistance which shows a lack of courage on your part. This choice is neither right nor wrong but simply is.
