  • I have heard that asparagus starts growing less and less around 5+ years, so you should ... um, well I know nothing about propogating asparagus, I just bought some. :) And then they kind of peter out as they get old, kind of like how strawberries spread and the "mother" (center) dies out as she sends out her babies? Mine are only two years old, this year I should finally be able to start gathering them to eat, I was told to leave them alone the first year. I guess I'll find out!

  • @tehaleks Good luck! When we bought the property, the asparagus plants already had some huge ones, which means they are on the decline when there aren't many. That was 15 years ago. Some of mine are just plain past it!

  • I don't know the answers to all your questions. From what I have gleaned, I hear it's better to throw it all away and buy new ones. But that takes money, so I just pawed into the old mound which only gives a few stalks a year, pulled the dead ones off and dug out the good ones to transplant.

I think the good ones get covered with the old ones and can't grow. Perhaps they are multiplying under the main bunch of crowns.

  • Nancy! This is just the info I need, how to revive neglected asparagus. Besides digging out grass, what needs to be done? Why do you "lose them?" Do you need to dig them up and divide them? What happens when they are 15-20 years old and neglected? Does it make sense to start over with new crowns or salvage the old ones?
