Isn't this the truck that the Soviets used to drag the portable ICBM launchers around with? If I remember right, it looks real similar to something that I saw in Soldier of Fortune about twenty years ago.
The engine in this vehicle is a model B 2 very similar to war time Rolls Royce V 12 but this is a Diesel engine.
Shaft driven twin overhead camshafts per bank, some were alloy construction, separate blocks bolted to crankcase, 12 element Bosch type injection pump mounted in V between blocks.
Engine is dry sump type and has to be pre lubed before starting,
Looks like an aircraft engine if the flywheel is removed
That thing looks like it can go through anywhere, and tow a huge trailer with a tank on its back through it. It says USSR on the door so it must be really old, I wonder how someone got their hands on one of these awesome things.

Go see Tatra videos and see them climbing in unbelievable vertical hills and mega rough terrain ...this MAZ is going over some 20% steep sand pit ....big deal so what??? TATRA POWER!!!!! dont let big 8x8 wheels fool you this truck has no guts ,just listen to the motor ;)
I am sure the original exhaust when out the top, but this looks like a privately owned vehicle judging by the kids there. I may be wrong, but still modifying an exhaust is really easy.
RenzeZielman -RenzeZielman --- WHY would they COPY Catterpillar ... or DETROIT .. diesel engines ... IT is not a ATOM bomb ... * THESE engines have extremely HIGH torque .. but LOW horse power rating .. THEY can pull 220.000 pounds with EASE ./.. HUGE ENGINES .. LOW horse power HIGH TORQUE ... IN the range of 7-8000 pounds of TORQUE ... CATERPILLAR C-15 in the range of 1800-2000 pounds of TORQUE ,... and 500 horses ...
These are tank engines from T-55 type. they are low rpm engines. Lower engine rpm means that you need more torque to put out the same power at lower revolutions.
absolute torque doesnt mean as much as you think, what matters most is the torque BACKUP, the max. amount of torque IN RELATION TO the torque at maximum power (which is usually near max. rpm)
MAZ MINSK AUTO ZAVOD that means MINKS AUTO WORKS and are made in Minsk Russia since the early 1940s and are lorry and tractor specialist. Most models come with aircooled
V10 and V12 petrol and diesel engines. The Russian Army have many within their trucks.
This is Soviet era thinking, why waste metal making stack exhausts when the side vents work just fine? The look like a Submarine inside as well, not much on the creature comforts.
Russia copied many Caterpillar and Detroit engine designs for their military trucks. Even the ZIL staff cars of the high political party people, were copies of American cars of the era.
Building something bigger, doesnt make you smarter: in fact, getting only 13.5 hp per liter of engine displacement doesnt sound smart to me... Tatra is of a whole different breed, because they are robust enough to withstand military use, yet economical enough for civil use.
man 13.5hp per liter may not seem much but can you tell me how much torque that thing has? and man I posted this comment 9 months ago. Id take one if you put Tracks on it.
They are just monsterous, twin V8 gas motors , which I understand are nearly impossible to synchronize. They also are over 8 feet wide I believe making them hard to drive on most roads. Isn't the top speed like 60 kmh?
Remember that this MAZ was build in the 60´s, you can´t compare a modern C15 whit this old engine but this engine generate extremely high torque because the big deplacement, maybe 2 or 3 times more torqe than your Cat.
This truck was designed to carry very heavy loads across long distances, with or without roads.
It can ford water up to one meter deep, climb gradients of 23 degrees, and descend gradients of 52 degrees with a full trailer!
i understand that tourque is everything but to have 38.9 liters and have that small of a hp range is impressave i mean the ntc 220 cummins are 12.7 liter while 60 series detroits are the same displacement but produce 425hp
