From 4:09-4:14 if Mr. Handford thinks that nothing will keep him awake and once he falls asleep (that is, if he ever got to go to sleep even though he didn't), and his alarm clock rings, he probably would have slept through the ringing if he thinks that nothing will keep him awake.
@musicbox193 Actually, they did do it with the other human characters. Gordon has actually been played by three actors since the show began. He was first played by Matt Robinson from 1969-1972, then Hal Miller from 1972-1974, and finally Roscoe Orman from 1974 on.
It was a difficult situation because Northern Calloway developed serious mental illness. His behavior on set and with other cast members and crew was sometimes disturbing at at least once, physically violent. He was fired and he later died in a mental institution.
Why would they? David didn't die; he just left the show. It wasn't until after leaving that Northern Calloway actually died. I'm sure if he was still on the show at the time, the cast would have paid their respects.
That's a very good point. (I'm not sure if that really was true or not that David moved to the farm to be with his grandmother after he noticed about his bad health). I'm sure everyone was sad that David/Northern Calloway passed away but, maybe the reason why they didn't mention him passing away was because, Carroll Spinney (the one who plays as Big Bird) was an extremely close friend to Mr. Hooper/Will Lee, and they wanted the audience to know how sad Big Bird/Carroll Spinney was feeling.
Before Mr. Handford took a nap break, I wonder why he wasn't wearing an apron just like Gina was since he's the owner of Hooper's Store and not Gina. Unless maybe, since the pipe was broken, both Mr. Handford and Gina had Hooper's Store closed until the pipe was totally fixed or, until an hour when it was okay to turn the water back on. However, if Hooper's Store really was closed, it probably wasn't necessary for Gina to wear an apron until the store opened.
Yes. I remember when Smyrl replaced Jackson, I was like "what the heck?" because I was used to Jackson. Soon though, I just thought "well, if you say so" and dropped the whole thing. I was still too young to know about actors.
Incidentally, Leonard Jackson also appeared on what was probably my favorite episode of Mathnet, part of Square One TV.
I know that Leonard Jackson also appeared in a Sesame Street skit as a grocer with Wanda The Word Fairy (this was before he played as Mr. Handford). Also, he was on the show "Shining Time Station" where he played as a train conductor.
I remember him as the grocer who makes sure Wanda pays. But I had trouble keeping up with "Shining Time Station" as a kid so I don't remember him on it at all.
It took me a while to realize that Mr. Handford and Colonel Ashby Wiggins (formerly Wigsdon) were played by the same guy.
@afriendofbean Actually, Leonard Jackson's STS character, Harry Cupper, was an engineer, not a conductor. There were two Mr. Conductor characters, but they were played by Ringo Starr and George Carlin.
Oh yes that's right, my mistake. I remember Leonard Jackson on Shining Time Station and somehow I thought he was one of the train conductors. I remember Ringo Starr and George Carlin as train conductors where they were very small characters (I don't remember too much about Shining Time Station so I'm not sure why they were small) and sometimes they would blow a whistle to tell a story about a certain train, like Thomas the Train. I definitely know Leonard Jackson was never small.
Neither did I. Even worse, He died the same year Jim Henson died. There must of been too much tragedy that the media thought no one could handle it. Considering were in the shows 40th the fans deserve the truth about their favorite characters.
That's true. I know David passed away on January 9, 1990 and Jim Henson passed away on May 16, 1990. Also you're right, it might've been too sad for anyone to say that David left the show and it was also sad for them to say that he passed away when he did. However, I know during this skit, David was still alive, so I guess the directors and producers told Gina not to say he had bad health (they probably didn't want to embarrass him while he was still alive) but, that he moved to the farm.
I think the episode would have been better if they actually would have included Northen Calloway in it, selling the store to Mr. Handford. And there could have been a big farewell party for him on Sesame Street. What do you think?
Yes, that would have been very nice if they had Northern Calloway on this last Sesame Street episode probably showing him interviewing and selling the store to Mr. Handford instead of just Gina telling the audience at 0:30 that he sold the store to Mr. Handford. Also I agree, they should have made a farewell party for him (just like they did for Alan to welcome him) unless maybe they chose too but, since his health wasn't good, I wonder maybe if he didn't have energy to have a party.
Also, I'm not sure if that really was true in real life if David really did move to the farm to be with his grandmother or, if Gina just said it just to avoid saying that he had bad health which is the reason why he left the show.
It sure is funny how Snuffy and Alice call him Mr. Handfoot instead of Mr. Handford. It's also funny how Big Bird accidently would call Mr. Hooper as Mr. Looper. I have always wondered why Mr. Handford was gone without any of the Sesame Street characters explaining to the audience why he was gone. I know after Mr. Hooper passed away, they explained that to Big Bird, and after David passed away, Gina here on this skit lied to the audience that he's living on the farm.
Also, one of Alan's newest assistants at Hooper's Store is "Chris Robinson." In case you were not sure who "Chris Robinson" is, "Chris Robinson" is the nephew of Gordon and Susan Robinson where Chris moved to Sesame Street to look for a job. Since he was very unsuccessful in finding a job, "Alan" hired him at Hooper's Store.
Yes you're right. It does sound harsh but, maybe the reason why some of the Sesame Street cast lied that David is living on the farm because, they probably didn't want to embarass him while he was still alive saying that he was told to leave the show because of his health reasons which were contagious. Also, those Sesame Street cast members probably didn't want to also embarass David saying that he had bad health since he was still alive at this time.
At 3:53, Mr. Handford looked like he was angry at Gina when he said "wait a minute, I just remembered something, I'm supposed to be taking a nap!" If he was angry, that wasn't a very nice thing for him to say, even if he is her boss when he could've said, "excuse me but I need rest." Also, even if he did speak to her in a rude way, maybe he didn't mean it because since his alarm was set he wanted to get enough sleep, and also, since he was very tired being up all night, he was feeling cranky.
It was unknown why Alan took over. Before Alan came on the show, the last episode was about Slimey returning back from the moon, and the next episode Alan came on the show and Mr. Handford was gone with no reason why. On the first episode that Alan was on, the beginning of the episode showed Big Bird with his birdkeeter's, and Big Bird said to the audience pointing to Alan from a distance saying "look over there, that's Alan, the new Hooper's Store manager, come with me I'll introduce you."
"Went to the farm!" or "Bought the farm" Code for he died. I'm just glad the kids who watched this for the first time on TV did not made the connection/
Northern Caolloway hadn't died yet when this season started. He just left the show at the end of season 20 because of his declining health. The producers held out hope that he would eventualy recover, so they just wrote David out as moving away to take care of his grandmother on her farm.
Well, what other segments are shown on episode 2620 besides "Ernie & Bert make their beds", "Detective Grover", "Kermit directs Forgetful Jones to go through the door", and "Sinister Sam looks for Doc Holiday"?
On Sesame Street, he moved to the country and before he left, he gave the store to Mr. Handford. In real life, David retired from the show due to health concerns, eventually he died. Does that explain it all?
