Dr. Na'im Akbar ROCKS!!! My parents met Sam Greenlee once when he was speaking at Marcus Books in Oakland, CA. I attended a school from age 8 to adulthood that was 98.9% black. I learned a lot about our history and about the people who came and went before me, who were GREAT soldiers of our history...unfortunately, I can't think of ANY of there names (I'm so ashamed) (not really).
I can say though, without a shadow of doubt, that my MOM is one of the greatest black people to ever to set foot on this planet!

"Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl" is a slave narrative by Harriet Jacobs. If anybody has the time to read it please do. It is amazingly interesting. It details the life of a slave girl from the time she became a slave until she was free... it is in the Norton Anthology (the African American one i think or maybe the American Lit one)
