In response to the interview being scripted, i don't think it is.
There are parts of that interview where they are working together but Gervais keeps stepping all over Shandlings build ups, I don't think thats set up.
The bit with the phone, classic Shandling joke, set up. The bungled build up to the ice-bath joke, stepped all over by Gervais, that's natural ignorance, anxiety and impatience. Or maybe not.
"Shandling clearly never really knew who Gervais was and obviously only watched Extras in the run up to the interview. In doing that he was able to give his opinion free of much of the fawning we see of Gervais's work this side of the Atlantic. Shandling's dissection of Extras is spot on, minority characters are only there to be laughed at. It led to a great experience for any comedy fan tired of the uncritical way Gervais is treated in this country." King Mob, DigitalSpy
It wasn't a series of spoof documentaries, it was a series of straight documentaries where Gervais would discuss comic influence with his comedy heroes like Christopher Guest and Larry David. The others went as planned, this one didn't. Gervais has since gone on record saying he doesn't want to do any more of these interview shows because of the Shandling experience. So no, despite them both making mockumentaries in the past, this is not a spoof.
of course it's all scripted. this is the sort of humour that they both specialize in. it was part of a mini-series of spoof documentaries that gervais filmed. do you think anything is "real" on tv anymore?
Check out The Larry Sanders Show episodes in my videos, all 89 episodes are being uploaded, up to 26 at the moment, Hey Now.. enjoy the cream of the crop, apparently with the difficulties with obtaining licences from the multitude of muiscal artists that appeared on this show a complete DVD release is unlikely... shame
listen to the line gerry says before making the coffee. h's clearly testing gervais' own theory on awkward moments

I watched as much as I could bear, i find Gervais extremely irritating. It certainly highlights your point.
you may have seen this one, its ok if you are interested in Shandling.

Yes but thanks to you we have all enjoyed it. Although I would like a DVD to hear Shanling's take on guest stars on his show.
