The bible, it has been argued, has other intentions than to act as a spokesman and representative of god, but it has been abused such. Some believe the true meaning of the bible is spiritual, and 'god' represents the wisest and best of yourself, not some being in the sky who brings heaven.
Why the hell does everyone moan about this film because of religion? I am not Christian but I know how powerful faith can be and that is what the whole film is about. It was never about one man shooting a load of people it was one man bringing faith to a world in chaos.
I suggest googling "Book of Eli christian propaganda" and read one of the subsequent reviews that pop up, before wasting two hours on this movie

As an Atheist, I found this movie very entertaining. One mans devotion to his 'calling'. The 'Religion' aspect of it is, I think, centered around the idea, not very much the practice. In the end,(spoiler alert, don't read any further) the recovered gospels are put on a library shelf next to books of other religions, no greater or lesser, and represent the record, the significance, the historical legacy, not the blind irrational belief in imaginary friends or events.

I don't understand all the bad reviews for this. If you go on Internet Movie DataBase and look at the reviews, there is literally a whole page of 1 out of 10 star ratings. I for one found this film fantastic. Fantastic acting, awesome action, great setting, intriguing plot and a absolutely superb plot twist at the end. That plot twist really makes you reconsider everything you thought you knew about whats going on, and gives you all the more reason the rewatch. Underated film to say the least.

I don't think the movie's premise will work. The Bible and/or parts of it has been published in more than 2,300 languages & thus is available to more than 90% of the world's population: making it the undisputed most widely published book in history (ask the Guinness Book of World Records). Not to mention the electronic versions. And the only one saved after a global catastrophe was a single Braille copy(?!)
The movie was brilliant, that is until it was ruined by the religious nonsense. Why did it have to be the Bible? It took the film from a 9 to a 7. Never seen a worse ending!

Its a brilliant movie. As time passes and events seem to follow the Prophecy, this movie may represent the future. For the entire land looks destroyed as Afghanistan. The idea that a global islam may render that movie to become true is not farfetched. If you take a look at islam it always was in battle with someone,until it led a country in an entire ruin.
This movie was a really big let down. I mean don't get me wrong, the acting and (few) fight scenes were really great but the plot was very flawed at best. (SPOILERS) Like the whole movie is based after a war caused by religion and all the way through the movie the main bad guy goes on about how the bible is used to control men. But then at the end of the movie your meant to see meaning and be happy that he saved the book. Was I the only one not buying it?

'The Book of Eli' is my personal favorite movie of 2010. Great movie with great storyline, acting, directing. The atmosphere reminded me Mad Max trilogy a little bit. Denzel Washington was great. Mila Kunis showed surprisingly stunning acting. Her best film to date. Gary Oldman - no comments, great as always. He was born for villain roles

Terrible film! Aside from the totally predictable ending the entire premise of the film is so utterly absurd as to be laughable - of the 100 MILLION Bibles printed worldwide each year, only ONE is still in existence! Of course, you can still find a copy of "DaVinci Code"!!! Just the most obvious in a disappointing film filled with plot holes.

It's never stated that it was going to reestablish a moral society that's just something that Eli believes. The movie does a pretty good job of not picking sides, and the makers of the film even put in that the book can be used for evil Gary Oldman's reason for wanting the book was to control people with it. Theirs even a point in the movie where they allude to the Bible even being the reason the world fell into an apocalypse. But I guess anti-Christianity people see what they want.
@Spiderblade, I certainly don't belong to the fantasy cult that deifies some freedom fighter from Galilee who got himself killed two thousand years ago for going up against the Romans but my concerns about the film promoting the bible as some sort of moral code we should follow is also concerned with the Old Testament which is basically a grisly history of murder, rape, genocide, slavery and other barbaric practises that should form no part of a decent society. LOTR would have been better, LOL.

I saw it's place on the bookshelf but I also saw them churning out lots of copies. If I had been Eli, I think that I would have been strongly tempted to only dictate the good parts and leave out the parts that led to so much oppression, torture and misery in the last 2000yrs.
@arisuta2 Look I'm christian and I know it wouldn't be the best book for rebuilding a moral society, but again that is only what Eli believes it didn't mean that's what was going to happen. With the other copies of the bible that were produced, you can bet that they did the same for those other religious books and even regular books. Why, because that was the goal of those people on Alcatraz to preserve ALL our literature before the war, and only having one copy wouldn't be very smart.

I don't think the movie's premise will work. The Bible and/or parts of it has been published in more than 2,300 languages & thus is available to more than 90% of the world's population: making it the undisputed most widely published book in history (ask the Guinness Book of World Records). Not to mention the electronic versions. And the only one saved after a global catastrophe was a single Braille copy(?!)

The movie was brilliant, that is until it was ruined by the religious nonsense. Why did it have to be the Bible? It took the film from a 9 to a 7. Never seen a worse ending!

Its a brilliant movie. As time passes and events seem to follow the Prophecy, this movie may represent the future. For the entire land looks destroyed as Afghanistan. The idea that a global islam may render that movie to become true is not farfetched. If you take a look at islam it always was in battle with someone,until it led a country in an entire ruin.

This movie was a really big let down. I mean don't get me wrong, the acting and (few) fight scenes were really great but the plot was very flawed at best. (SPOILERS) Like the whole movie is based after a war caused by religion and all the way through the movie the main bad guy goes on about how the bible is used to control men. But then at the end of the movie your meant to see meaning and be happy that he saved the book. Was I the only one not buying it?

Since there is little food people are starting to eat other humans. If you eat enough of your own kind you get the shakes. One way to to tell is that the hands start to shake first. Did you notice the old couple in the house? They had a slight shake in their hands.

'The Book of Eli' is my personal favorite movie of 2010. Great movie with great storyline, acting, directing. The atmosphere reminded me Mad Max trilogy a little bit. Denzel Washington was great. Mila Kunis showed surprisingly stunning acting. Her best film to date. Gary Oldman - no comments, great as always. He was born for villain roles

the "book" is a king james bible that's in brail.
Eli is blind, but they don't reveal that until the end when he starts to resite the bible and have it written down.

Terrible film! Aside from the totally predictable ending the entire premise of the film is so utterly absurd as to be laughable - of the 100 MILLION Bibles printed worldwide each year, only ONE is still in existence! Of course, you can still find a copy of "DaVinci Code"!!! Just the most obvious in a disappointing film filled with plot holes.

@crhood2166 The problem that I have with the movie is that the Holy Bible, including the Old Testament, is meant to reestablish a moral society. Hahahahahaha, I guess the makers have never actually read that incredibly violent, racist, mysogenistic pile of crap. It's more likely to be used by control freaks like the Roman Catholic church to justify any horror they care to inflict.

It's never stated that it was going to reestablish a moral society that's just something that Eli believes. The movie does a pretty good job of not picking sides, and the makers of the film even put in that the book can be used for evil Gary Oldman's reason for wanting the book was to control people with it. Theirs even a point in the movie where they allude to the Bible even being the reason the world fell into an apocalypse. But I guess anti-Christianity people see what they want.

@Spiderblade, I certainly don't belong to the fantasy cult that deifies some freedom fighter from Galilee who got himself killed two thousand years ago for going up against the Romans but my concerns about the film promoting the bible as some sort of moral code we should follow is also concerned with the Old Testament which is basically a grisly history of murder, rape, genocide, slavery and other barbaric practises that should form no part of a decent society. LOTR would have been better, LOL.

Ok , so what? I already explained to you that in this movie they chose to never say the bible will end this apocalypse ITS ONLY WHAT ELI BELIEVES. Hell the bible really didn't matter if you watched the movie til the end you would see all those other religious books where the bible was placed. It's pretty apparent that you have a complete bias, and that your real concern is that the movie didn't go out of it's way to show the bible as evil and only evil.

@Spiderblade, NO, no, no, of course the bible is not only evil, there are many many beautiful things in there, they just don't outweigh the bad sufficiently to make it the best choice of book for rebuilding a moral society. I saw it's place on the bookshelf but I also saw them churning out lots of copies. If I had been Eli, I think that I would have been strongly tempted to only dictate the good parts and leave out the parts that led to so much oppression, torture and misery in the last 2000yrs.

With the other copies of the bible that were produced, you can bet that they did the same for those other religious books and even regular books. Why, because that was the goal of those people on Alcatraz to preserve ALL our literature before the war, and only having one copy wouldn't be very smart.
