Sweden's anthem, "Du gamla, du Fria," shares the love of the North, of the green meadows and beautiful mountains. This song includes our Norwegian brothers and sisters- there is no reason to bicker over who is better over matters of economy or history. Let's just get along, and love Scandinavia as it deserves.
@SwedishSamwise Well, said! Enjoy this magnificient singer and song. It has nothing to do with wars or economies or anhything else to do. Share and enjoy!
@theme45, are you norwegian? Cause I love that you have uploaded all the songs from the Glade Jul-album, but this is the only one I can see! And it says something about "this is not available in your country". If you're norwegian, does this mean you cannot see the videos either? And why? :/ I really want to listen to the songs in Desember :)
Ok, this is becoming quite stupid! If you want to comment on this, try to sound just a little bit intelligent, ok? Or am I asking too much? The thing is: Sissel Kjyrkebø has a good voice, she's really talented. If she had choosen to educate herself in the classical tradition, she could have been great. Well, a new Emma Kirkby, perhaps? Another lost opportunity, I'm sorry to say.
Me, I hate all Norwegians, everywhere, all the time, forever. But that takes nothing away from the fact that no soprano singer, of any kind, can hold a candle to this woman. Magnificent does not begin to cut it. She stands apart from the entire pack of great soprano singers, so magnificent is just a word that the rest of the pack can do with. This woman is something else, and beyond magnificent.
@ynklo Norway is such a small country, yet we're one of the most generous when it comes to aiding the poor and less fortunate countries. Some countries have three times the inhabitants in one city, than Norway has in the entire country, but we're still one of the countries that gives the most. We let people from war-torn countries come to Norway, for a better life. And despite that our country is so small, we let more people in than many of the bigger countries. Anti-human? I don't think so!
Please dear swedish neighbours, don't forget this song i originally French, and there is a story about it from 1.ww, but your's great tenor Jussi Björling make this song to a really pearl sheared in all over Scandinavia. Bless him and Sissel, we can sheer the treasures and all have joy of it......
@litdeparade1, Norwegian gross national product is slightly greater than Swedish, even though Sweden inhabit twice as many people. That tells us something about Swedish productivity, or rather the lack of it. About 25% can be explained by weak Swedish currency.
Norway got three times as much money in the bank (or rather stock in different successful companies all over the world) than Sweden got in loans. Still, Swedish total tax is higher, and groth increase puts mind to developing countries.
@tnekkc, GNP number I was refering to excludes off shore. The reason why is simple. Tax income from oil harwest is reinvested pretty much all together. Without off shore norwegian economy is greater than the swedish even tough there is twice as many swedes.
BTW, are you really proud of the swedish role in the WW2 when they let the burden to save liberty upon everybody but themselves? Yet they have not even had a war settlement in a moral sense. You should spit on them!
@kroeg11 No.A former friend of Norway, who used to visit Røros, but who was later to realize the true evil behind the Norwegian's mask with the frozen idiot smile.

This is what a true Christmas song sounds like - you can hear it with your soul and it makes you feel insignificant and extremely grateful!

The most magnificent of sounds to be experienced on this earth! Spellbinding performance from the most beautiful of women! Sissel Kyrkjebo is a modern-day wonder!!
@lisamariekarlsen ,,,,,yes, thank you, but the reference is to the language she sings in rather than to her nationality! I know she is Norwegian, but it also states that this rendition is, in fact, in Swedish! As a non-speaker I wouldn't know anyway, having to rely on others for this information! Appreciate your input, however!
@benoni45 It wouldn't matter if this young Lady was from Mars; she definitely has one of the most incredible and beautiful voices I have ever heard (I'm 69 years old and trust me I have heard multitudes of different singers). Would love for her to visit Florida, USA.
@AAngerJ: I love Sissel, especially her 'O Mio Babbino Caro' and 'Shenandoah.' However, Jussi Bjorling's performance of 'O Holy Night" was spectacular! I heard many of Jussi's recordings before hearing him sing this song. He had already earned a tie with Caruso for first place on my list of tenors. When I heard Jussi's version of this song, I was floored!
This woman's voice (girl's then) is to singing what the Higgs-Boson particle is to physics. Theoretically possible, but yet impossible to find. It is the Holy Grail. Utter perfection.
No human will EVER sing like this again. Words of any language will never describe just what this voice does to you. It is only described by the utterly astonishing feeling in your heart and soul when you hear it.
This is Swedish, but who the heck cares? This is amazing anyhow<3
Myself, I consider Swedish to be a western kind of Norwegian and Norwegian to be a eastern kind of Swedish. If you think of it that way, it makes sense... Kinda. ;)
I know they ARE different languages, I just like wordplay :D
Perhaps Sissel sings in Swedish because Jussi Björlings version became a standard in its own right. Maybe somebody could ask her why she chose Swedish and not Norwegian...
she sings in swedish because i dont think there is a norwegian version of the song. there are only small difrences between norwegian and swedish language
norwegian words would work quite well, but the song is so nice in swedish, why should we change it? funny that a norwegian singer sings it better than any swedish,,,, lol
You forgot about icelandic which also shares the germanic base, bue yes Norwegian, Swedish, Danish and Icelandish is a branch of germanic called norththern germanic languages. They've all developed in different directions tho, Icelandic has maintainedt he highest amount of the common language that was spoken during the age of the vikings on the other hand.
Anyway, sissel has a beautiful voice and can sing in almost any language and yet sound beautiful.
@YhvUfOrSaKeNme No, Spanish and Portuguese are mutually intelligible. Italian is not with either of those. "A language is a dialect with an army and navy"
@TheInimitableKaka >>> I am sorry to disappoint you guys but Spanish and Portuguese are intelligible only on a one-way street. Portuguese-speakers can understand a Spanish-speaking person but the other way round is not necessarily true. Italian is further from both and can not at all be understandable by either speaker without previous training.
@Hinidas Yes, that is generally correct. As a Hispanophone, I generally cannot understand full-speed spoken Portuguese. I can read Italian, largely because of Spanish, but definitely because of other factors as well. However, Portuguese is very easily readable by native Hispanophones, excepting illiterates.
@Hinidas True, being the son of a Portuguese born mother. I speak fluent Portuguese, I also have no problem understanding a Spaniard. I also have no problem understanding an Italian. When both languages are written then pose no problem to me. But for some reason a Spaniard or Italian cannot understand a Portuguese unless it is in the written form...
@DAVEJJR >>> Thank you for your message. It is always a pleasure to find members of the Portuguese-speaking community in the world. I believe the point is: most of these romance-languages can be mutually decodified by speakers of any of them (except maybe for the Romanian language which can have a sequence of three identical vowels!). But when it comes to speaking in a native rhythm, then things tend to worsen on every side!
But the strange thing is that sissel is from norway.
And the only difference (except a couple of words) between swedish and norwegian is the dialect. And her dialect is norwegian. Therefor i thought it was that.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
She sings,s like a choir girl as everyone. Thats no secret that you have a girl choir in almaust every town in the world! And many of them sings better than this........
She is so beautiful! and this song is magnificent! the way se adjusts her pitch to it the right parts and make it sound so perfect!. I love it. splendid. excellent. brilliant. masterclass. superb. great. fantastic (i can go on forever!)
I saw her at a concert in Sweden for two weeks ago and NO she does´nt need a choir for help. She sungs this AMAZING all by herself, it was a divine moment and people sitting around me was drying the tears in their eyes after, me too.
antonilil im saved newbornchristian i say she have heaven in her and the holy spirit in her made you cry she sinh sing with reak real love i see love in her eyes from god i understand you cryed . i do just to listen on her on web peace jesus bless you richly must jesus save you she is christian peace
I can't ever fully enjoy this song because I can't sing along. Sissel is too good at singing. Lowering it an octave doesn't do it justice.

1. You listen to someother song. You think "It's awsome".
2. You listen to Sissel.
3. Your face O.O
4. Your inner thoughts ("GOD, THIS IS BEAUTIFUL! HOW I HAVE NEVER HEARD THIS GIRL BEFORE!!??")

The best soprano I've ever heard!bravo,it's awesome!

Very nice, but for REAL singing, go to the version on Utube by Jussi Bjorling.

She sings it fantastic in swedish with a nice and charming norwegian accent. And so did the world famous operasinger number one, Jussi Bjorling..

truly great voice, in NORWEGIAN, people who clearly don`t know the between swedish and norwegian should keep their mouth shut!
( I AM a norwegian btw)

Sissel is norwegian, but she sings of course in swedish. (sorry if i were a bit confusing in my comment ;-) )
nilsenbj 2 years ago
Sissel is multilingual and sings in many languages. She is awesome.
emnwa 2 years ago 2
Perhaps Sissel sings in Swedish because Jussi Björlings version became a standard in its own right. Maybe somebody could ask her why she chose Swedish and not Norwegian...
saqmatit 2 years ago 2
she sings in swedish because i dont think there is a norwegian version of the song. there are only small difrences between norwegian and swedish language

She sings the the Swedish version because it is clearly superior to the Norwegian. The corresponding Norwegian words simply don't fit the music.
schmobot 2 years ago
norwegian words would work quite well, but the song is so nice in swedish, why should we change it? funny that a norwegian singer sings it better than any swedish,,,, lol

Norwegian is NOT a "Dialect" of Swedish
They are both separate Independent Languages that can mutually understand each other!
Just like Italian, Spanish & Portuguese
they can ALL understand eachother.
Swedish, Danish & Norwegian are the Germanic Equivalent.
YhvUfOrSaKeNme 2 years ago 26
Different languages are NOT mutually understood by linguistic definition. Dialects ARE mutually understood variations of the same language.
germantetsuo 2 years ago
Well then in THAT case Spanish, Portuguese & Italian are "Dialects" as well..
NOT..
YhvUfOrSaKeNme 2 years ago
and so is serbish and albanian by that definition.
Svendsor 2 years ago
@germantetsuo
Listen i never took classes for Italian and Portuguese yet i DO mutually understand them.
I speak Spanish. These are three different languages yet i do understand them although they aren't dialects
supernatural492 2 years ago
@YhvUfOrSaKeNme
Demon2k3 1 year ago
@YhvUfOrSaKeNme lol, italian, spanish and portuguese are not so close as you think...
Senduil 1 year ago
@YhvUfOrSaKeNme No, Spanish and Portuguese are mutually intelligible. Italian is not with either of those. "A language is a dialect with an army and navy"
TheInimitableKaka 1 year ago
@TheInimitableKaka >>> I am sorry to disappoint you guys but Spanish and Portuguese are intelligible only on a one-way street. Portuguese-speakers can understand a Spanish-speaking person but the other way round is not necessarily true. Italian is further from both and can not at all be understandable by either speaker without previous training.
Hinidas 1 year ago
@Hinidas Yes, that is generally correct. As a Hispanophone, I generally cannot understand full-speed spoken Portuguese. I can read Italian, largely because of Spanish, but definitely because of other factors as well. However, Portuguese is very easily readable by native Hispanophones, excepting illiterates.
TheInimitableKaka 1 year ago
@Hinidas True, being the son of a Portuguese born mother. I speak fluent Portuguese, I also have no problem understanding a Spaniard. I also have no problem understanding an Italian. When both languages are written then pose no problem to me. But for some reason a Spaniard or Italian cannot understand a Portuguese unless it is in the written form...
DAVEJJR 1 year ago
@DAVEJJR >>> Thank you for your message. It is always a pleasure to find members of the Portuguese-speaking community in the world. I believe the point is: most of these romance-languages can be mutually decodified by speakers of any of them (except maybe for the Romanian language which can have a sequence of three identical vowels!). But when it comes to speaking in a native rhythm, then things tend to worsen on every side!

I hear that when you say it -.-
Damn it!
But the strange thing is that sissel is from norway.
And the only difference (except a couple of words) between swedish and norwegian is the dialect. And her dialect is norwegian. Therefor i thought it was that.

Wow...
That is really great!
I don't even speak Swedish, but this is absolutely captivating and I can't stop listening to it!
