  • This song reminds me a cold day in 1986, somewhere on the countryside, on the way back to England.

  • And the original artist ..

  • Comment removed

  • People it's not about who's better, THE JAM or OASIS or THE SMITHS etc, it's about the music,in their day each were GREATS,But for RAW POWER/PASSION and a band that captured their generation and influenced many bands to come and songs still stack up today.... THE JAM.

  • TOP TEN. LOVELY SONG, BEAUTIFUL LYRICS

  • great the way he opened this song up. compared to when done with the style concil..much better after ten years wow..awesome..

  • @richyfitz10 toatally agree mate

  • top tune

  • Pure class!!

  • Weller = LEGEND

  • Great version of a great song- think I like this more than the version on My Favourite Shop.

Paul Weller could sing the contents of the Greater London Phonebook and it would still sound profound

  • i envy you for that pleasure...here in nothern germany its not possible seeing him live on stage.. :-((((..good to have you tube, at least

  • I am going to see Paul Weller in concert tonight in Brighton ....... can't wait!!!!!!!

  • @danny6655 i envy you for that pleasure...here in nothern germany its not possible seeing him live on stage.. :-((((..good to have you tube, at least

  • @lomasca, Go on google and search "guitar tabs", enter the first one on list, key in paul weller and theres loads of his stuff. Thats where I got it.

  • Anyone know where I can download or find the chords to this version!?

  • Great song

  • lovely melody

  • Thanks for sharing this vid, Paul Weller is a LEGEND! He could play a guitar with no arms he's that good.

  • That's entertainment!

  • If Saint Peter granted me the wish to be reborn as a musician, i just might choose to be Paul Weller. He's wonderful.

  • Here here, I play in a Jam tribut eband and what a man of great promise and fullfillment.

  • 82 u were late but welcome aboard to the greatest singer songwriter in the world/ his versatility is unmatched by anyone.

  • I was lucky enough to discover Weller in the US back in '82. He's still wonderful...music, lyrics, style, and much-needed criticism of the status quo. Much thanks to those who are still posting all the videos.

  • Makes me wanna cry

  • The change that starts at 2:08 always made me do that

  • By far the best version of this great song

  • heh,heh..604jonathan i see what you mean there about Weller fans great musician as though he is

  • I 've seen this many times. I love it more and more each time I see it.

  • You can see Weller's approval of guitar rythym by one of the Ocean Colour Scene members at around 1.46secs.

Amazing lyrics, Paul Weller at his very best.

  • yeah deffo. you know!

  • yeah i saw that too and it did sound great aswell

  • rest in peace dave waller great song!!

  • shut up you stupid douchers. Why don't you just suck his nuts, stupid sycophants.

  • great song ..the best he has ever wrote...

  • without doubt the most underated weller track ever! alongsige ghosts this tune will never falter haunting moving & human ...& wow what a performance seems only like yesterday.

    rip john weller

  • legend

    what a tune

  • As singer songwriters go in Britain, he is the best. From the Jam to the underated Style Coucil to solo today. The man is a genius!

  • And the more I saw I hated.

  • i think weller is possibly the best singer song writer ever all his songs are utter class. however i think that oasis as a band are better than the jam and style council. but agree that weller is a far more accomplished musician than noel

  • he is god but simon fowler is equal...

  • egual yeah right

  • Powerful song, great lyrics !!! The man is a genius.

  • 30 plus years of this man and his beautiful music. We are lucky to have this man on earth. Weller is a gem indeed.

  • just another year with Weller!!!

    great 2009 everybody!

  • as much as i like noel gallagher he doesn't even come close. this is beyond his ability, ever

  • id say there wasnt much between them,id like to see them team up and sing together more

  • 8 times iv seen weller he is pure class a legend . i would say he is the best singer songwriter ever lived , i cant name anyone who gets close .

  • Are u sure? What about noel gallagher? He's a good singer and best song writer too.

  • noel isnt as good as paul though. Although they are both good friends and paul worked with oasis on their "whats the story (morning glory)" album.

I know this because i read it in a Biography of Paul Weller.

  • weller carreer is much more impressive than gallaghers - i think noel writes good songs but his voice lets him down. the jam were a much better band than oasis hands down

  • @moveonupcb noels voice lets him down , really mate , i know you made this comment a year ago but theres no way im lettin you get away with that , noels voice is the bollocks just like weller, just listen to his teenage cancer trust gigs, tell you what have a look at oasis half the world away at the barrowlands live , and then tell me how great his voice is

  • @moveonupcb it aint even a contest mate !

  • sidney devine

  • Just excellent!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • One of Paul's best from any point in his career.

  • It was written about an old school friend Dave Waller who was a writer/poet.Unfortunately,he was a heroin addict and died of a drugs overdose in his 20's.

  • i thought it may have been about steve marriott (EX SMALL FACES)who was a massive inspiration to paul, but may not be.

  • Does anyone know if this song was written about a real person ?It's one of my favourite songs.Regards.

  • It is supposed to be about one of Weller's friends who died young after battling drug addiction or something along those lines.

  • about his mate who died of the drugs but was a better song writer than him

  • awsome sound :)

  • Wow-a forgotten gem from a legend. When you consider who his contemporaries were, you realise how he has lasted far longer and kept writing beautiful songs - though i reckon there are a fair few who miss the Style Council. Still nice memories - saw them in 82 at Wembley arena - they were the best band I ever saw..

  • This song is just so emotional and it is Paul at his best...even though it was written during The Style Council years he was at his most poignant and politically minded at this time...his gravelly voice has matured over the years and has made him one of the finest British vocalists alongside Steve Winwood...

  • yeh i agree ,wot hes singing he means ,thats why i rate him so much..pure honesty..

  • Always loved this one.. I loved Weller to do an acoustic album...

  • how good would a gallagher and weller acoustic album be?

  • a plain ol' Weller one would be better

  • Try giving "Days of Speed" a listen, little bit of Jam, little bit of Style Council, some solo stuff.

  • Paul is so dreamy, so wonderful, I love this so song sooooo much!!!!!

  • still the bomb diggity bonb!

  • like a moth going to a flame

    you had a dangerous passion

    classic songwriting

you are a genius mr weller

  • days on still coming back for more!

  • oh my god this is amazing this is first time ive heard this tune! woo!

  • Only paul weller could produce a song about this subject and make you feel content at the end.greatest songwriter ever, make no mistake.

  • This song was about his old mate Dave Waller, he was in the original Jam line up from their school days. Im pretty sure Dave Waller died from a heroin overdose in 1980. Its good to hear how it has evolved, have a listen to the original version from 'our favorite shop', its very good as well

  • you are right it was about his best mate

  • @deskjohn I KNOW MATE,AND I THINK ITS ONE OF PAULS FAVOURITES,CERTAINTLY MINE.never got to meet your mate Dave ,but thats the way it goes BE SAFE LAD ALL THE BEST ANDY

  • @deskjohn I want to say how special this song is to me. I also lost my best friend to the illusion of Heroin twenty years ago. Paul has put into words how i feel about her. I wonder too what she might have been and she had a dangerous passion that was like a moth flying to a flame. Who am i to blame? Only someone who has lost someone through that awful affliction of drugs would know how perfectly Paul has put into his song what i feel is a good description of what its like to lose a friend.

  • This is a discovery. Just lovely.

  • still good

  • Fucking genius.

  • Maravilhoso!!! Canta muito!!RJ - Brasil

  • Amazing! Love this choon. A beautiful beautiful record.

Happy 50th Birthday today Mr Weller you are the man!!!

  • Such a wonderful song. I think it's about a friend of Paul's called Dave Waller.

  • great but very sad thought provoking song .

  • beat that for songwritin'......class

  • Agreed Joefigsy. Masterful.

  • This song means so much to so many, a reflection of our world perhaps ?

  • excellent, saw this on Tv or did I dream it?? Classic Weller track, off to see him in Halifax on the 5th May!!

  • I used to play in a band and we were rehearsing this track a week before our drummer died. Also a man of great promise! Makes the song and lyrics all the more meaningful to me now.

  • All my condolences.

  • PERFECT

  • beautiful

  • Didnt like the track on Our Favourite Shop...but this as an acoustic with Weller's aged gravel is emotionally moving....class

  • what a song cant stop listen to it

  • they played this at my mates funeral my god not a single dry eye in church described my mate perfectly thanks paul pure class man

  • "And I think of what you might have been, a man of such great promise, you seem to forget the dream and the more you saw you hated..."

What a song, thanks for posting.

  • All hail Weller!

Please never go back to the Jam though, Russel Hastings has that covered. Now there is a whole load of us with 2 great acts to follow.
