  • @scythemachine: You're thinking of River Phoenix (Joaquin's older brother)

  • Whoa, wait a minute-- I thought Keanu Reeves and Joaquin Phoenix were about the same age; you mean to tell me there's like, a ten year age difference between the two???

Guess Keanu really is immortal. O_O

  • wow he's such a good actor even then!!

    What a cutie!

  • Diane Wiest is an amazing actor. She conveys so much just thru her eyes!

  • He was sooo cute and not cute as in adorable but cute as in I would of had a huge crush on him if i was his age then.

  • As the daughter of a dad who remarried and abandoned us,this tears me apart.Joaquin so captured the agony of kids from first marriages who get shafted by their deadbeat dads. The dads who leave behind a shattered kid and thinks because he loves his NEW family, that makes up for their past mistakes. And the mom's heartbreak is so like my mum.Brilliant.

  • @ScattySafari i like where she chases him around the table..

  • what a good actor!

  • he was really good! even back then

  • theres only 4 people in the house. hows that getting crowded?

  • @MLSGNALZ

crowded from all the drama maybe.........haven't seen the movie in a while, but if i remember correctly, wasn't there another sibling or two?

  • @MLSGNALZ Garry is using it as an excuse to try to live with his dad. The fact that it's only four people makes this scene even more touching to me. It's a lame excuse by adult standards, but it's exactly the kind of thing a kid would say. This movie has a brilliant screenplay.

  • @MLSGNALZ No kidding - and they totally have one of those huge Hollywood homes that there's no way anyone in the film could actually afford. lol

  • Dianne Wiest is great in this film, she's a great actress, but sadly so under used, for me she's every bit as good an actress as Meryl Streep and I don't say that lightly either.

  • @Dazman1313 I agree. She is such a sweet lady. I can see her being a great mom.. she is so understanding and kind hearted.

  • wow. this movie was made probably when i was in my late 20's ( late 80's when the movie was released?) but, never paid much attention that, "this is Juaquin as a very young boy actor) wow! trip huh? only used to seeing him and what he looks like NOW> good movie

  • BABY JOAQUIN!

  • Awww...he was so sweet.

  • Why didn't his Dad want him to live with him.

  • @incrediblehulkmovies Because harelips freak him out.

  • @Kwimalo

    that's fucked up....

  • @incrediblehulkmovies In an earlier scene, his Mom had complained about her ex not even acknowledging the children from his first marriage.

"He's got his NEW wife, and his New kids!" I felt bad for her, I believe she knew what the response would be but she couldn't just refuse to allow her son to call his father.

  • cute joaquin.. :'(

  • OMG BABY JOAQUIN! He was a good actor then and now. He says things like "well" and when he licks his lips the same now as then. I'm werid :)

  • Little Joaquin, how gorgeous! This scene is so sad. :(

  • wow...joaquin very talented actor...did not know he was in this....

  • aww, he is so adorab;e. i watched this movie religiously over the summer. i havent seen it in a while. his acting reminds me so much of River's talent. two very talented guys. <3 peace and love rio and joaq!

  • Also, the new TV series of Parenthood is surprisingly good, but re-watching scenes like this from the original movie always reminds me that nothing can top the acting caliber of the original. I mean, all of the adults are superb, but the child actors Howard managed to find are incredible, too. It's the best movie about parenthood EVER.

  • JOAQUIN, I WANT YOU BACK IN FILM! :'(

What other child actor could have held his own against Dianne "the BEAST" WIEST and been so heartbreakingly believable at so young an age? And who else could have been Johnny Cash so well that it forced Witherspoon to match his intensity and give her best performance? ("she was so impressed [...] she knew she 'had to step it up a notch'--wikipedia)

You can still rap on the side, if you want, but seriously, your acting gift is inborn and needs further legacy.

  • It's so sad how you can see Garry's mom's heart breaking for him, because she obviously knows how his dad will respond to him.

  • I love this movie

  • joaquin looks so handsome :)

  • COUldnt you just eat him hahaha

  • i love when he destroys his dad's office with his hammer.

  • BABY JOAQUIN!!!!!!

It's so cute it makes me want to throw up ;D

  • lol i love your comment. The phoenix family is so adorable

  • @carmeenamack You mean baby leaf? haha

  • That was sad how Gary's dad blew him off.

  • just can't believe this is joquin phoenix
