  • The real star of this pro9gram f9r mje was John Daly. Urbane, eitty, mellifluos dicdtion and aqrticulation--the greatest.

  • My favorite contestant ever!!! Thank you for posting, I had this on Tivo a few years ago and lost.

  • haha that was great. she was a lot of fun without even saying much.

  • 8:01 What does John say there- "I don't think any great ... has been committed."

What was that word in the middle?

  • @harrietcow 'less majesty'? Possibly?

  • Psycho was released in July 1960 of this same year. This is May. Rarely have I seen Dorothy look any more beautiful than in this one.

  • Psycho was released in July 1960 of this same year. This is May.

  • Sexiest...eyepatch...ever

  • John's response to Dorothy's 'Two-by-two, heterosexually" cracked me up big time

  • Dorothy looks stunning with that hairstyle! Go Girl!

  • @chilvari Should have worn that style all the time. She's very stunning here.

  • Arlene is so cute with her eyepatch lol :P

  • It would be darned interesting to know how often the word "heterosexually" had been used in live American TV before Dorothy dropped it into living rooms all over America.

  • @KennySherman

Arlene was notoriously accident prone in this period -- apparently she stuck something in her eye.

This is the fourth and last time that Ms Francis appears on live TV in an eye patch. One time in the early 1950s, her son stuck something in her eye. Years later, she appeared wearing sunglasses, but that is another story.

  • @soulierinvestments Is the episode where is she wearing sunglasses on here at all?

  • Considering Arlene was sitting next to Tony Perkins, she's lucky to have kept one eye!

  • I hate how she said "that's north talk for children..." Also, why did the audience laugh at her accent!?

  • "Appliances for newly weds" Tony Perkins is adorable.

  • Dummy from Arkansas reinforced stereotype and begs for condescending hand of the northerner. Oh brother.

  • @spagandtuna She was no dummy. She had an accent, just like billions of other people in the world.

  • why is Arlene wearing an eye patch in this episode?

  • Love Tony but he made part of this clip a little draggy and painful to watch.

  • When my time machine is complete, I will definitely be attending this show. Hmmm .. I wonder if I have already completed it in the future and now I'm hearing myself laughing in the audience. *headexplodes

  • Miss Messiek was so sweet. I do wonder if she was afraid to ever come north again after this experience. When Dorothy said "heterosexually" she looked like she wanted to crawl under the desk ;-)

  • Big mouth Bennett strikes again

  • Tony Perkins looks so good here. Even if he did have homosexual tendencies, I go to bed with him this very minute!

  • @mcmrfklaw So would I!

  • @mcmrfklaw He was loaded with sex appeal.

  • "They do sometimes come two-by-two heterosexually, but they more often take the bus."

    I don't get it.

  • I suspect it refers to the play "Two By Two" that told the story of Noah's Ark.

  • What does that have to do with a bus though?

  • Again, just a guess; The mode of transportation is a bus, rather than an ark.

Or maybe it's a goofy way to imply the word 'heterosexual' denotes a mode of transportation. But, I'm reaching here.

  • What ever happened to Mary Ann Messick?

  • This is so awesome! i love how they hint around the topic os sex:) haha

  • Dorothy looks gorgeous! She always should have worn her hair that way.

  • Oh, Ms. Messick, God love her. Being from Arkansas myself, allow me to let it be known that not everyone who resides here has that accent, but some do! I loved this !

  • tony's questions are WAY TOO concentrated

  • Why does the cute blond judge have any eye patch?

  • @beepandbop Apparently her eye was injured...not serious though the patch did come off eventually.

  • "Football Player + Miss America on "What's My Line?" features a 1952 What's My Line episode with Arlene Francis in another eye patch. Yo Ho Ho.

  • Years later, Mary Ann Messick wrote a centennial history of Baxter County Arkansas.

  • haha oh anthony perkins was adorable in this!

  • Why are people with pronounced southern accents always laughed at or teased when speaking on television?

  • I wondered that myself, they thought everything she said was funny, I don't get it

  • Arlene is very accident prone

  • "Appliances for Newlyweds" DK and AF cracked up on that one.

  • Arlene looks gorgeous like always.

But why the hell is she wearing an eye patch?

  • She had scratched her left eye right before the show aired. I'm not sure if it's this episode or the previous episode. I'm thinking it's this episode.

  • It took all of one syllable - "Miss" - at 0:16 for everyone to know that she was a true daughter of Dixie. And the word "Arkansas" at 0:24 has never been given a more pronounced drawl.

  • Would most people at home in the 1950's even have known what the word "heterosexually" meant?

  • Dorothy looks so beautiful here and Arlene absolutely breathtaking.

  • Haha. Anthony Perkins is gay and she cracked at gay couples!!

  • arlene is sooooo beautiful.

  • HOW TRUE! Arlene is so delightful and beautiful (even with an eye patch)!

  • This is when game shows were intelligent.

  • Dorothy Kilgallen pretty much solved all the games that evening, including identification of mystery guest Jane Wyman. That clip is somewhere in YouTubia.

( 4:11> ) Would be interesting to know if this is the first time "heterosexually" ever appeared in a live entertainment program. I think the sound we hear after her question come from the CBS censors biting through the stems of pipes.

  • FUNNY!

  • It impresses me as a little odd that the only function of this JP mentioned was to perform marriages. Wouldn't she be like the town magistrate?

  • @cornermoose Yes. As an elected official she would likely have performed a variety of services besides marriages, including civil court proceedings such as small claims, property disputes, traffic court and misdemeanor hearings. A JP might do much of what you see taking place today on TV courtroom shows. This is why she indicated that not everyone left happy after seeing her.

  • Dorothy SO has a great haircut for her face, and no, no one could look more stunning wearing an eye-patch, BethBetteJulie. Arlene Francis was the BUSINESS, as is kirkba...!!!! Another fantastic post...!!!! Thanks...!!!

  • "And you're from New England?" :D

  • Dorothy has a great haircut for her face.

  • Could anyone look more stunning wearing an eye-patch?

    Arlene is wonderful.

  • @BethBetteJulie I agree, Arlene looks stunning wearing an eye patch. I also love her voice. She's got that natural sultriness to her personality and style.

  • @chilvari Yeah, not too many ppl in the world can make an eye patch look sexy loololol

  • MR PERKINS: You don't deal with appliances for Newlyweds?

HAHAHAAA Arlene and Dorothy's laughter is priceless. I love these ones that get no where and the panelists end up asking silly questions like this because they just have nothing left lol timeless!

Gorgeous ladies Dorothy and Arlene looking lovely as ever. I'm liking Arlene's hair here, it's a bit more full and out looking than usual. Very nice!

    Hilariously humble and lovely contestant

  • Dorothy and Arlene look stunning here. Great clip.

  • 1. As they say in French- a tall broad.

    2. Knowing that Perkins was an in-the-closet homosexual, i wonder what he was thinking to himself when the heterosexual comment was made. I wonder how these people were able to keep these dark secrets so that it didn't affect their ability to earn a living.

  • I don't think Tony Perkins was closeted: he was pretty open about having homosexual relationships and then, later in his life, both gay and straight relationships. This not to say he was going to go on about it on television, but folks knew he was gay.

  • Anthony Perkins appeared as a mystery guest a number of times both in the Sunday Night and syndicate versions, but he appeared more memorably as a panelist. He came to this broadcast to publicize his new movie directed by Hitchcock, "Psycho." He also appeared on that memorable panel in Feb 1961 that featured Dorothy Kilgallen as a mystery guest.

As we see, he entertains the audience consistently even if his questions aren't quite very good.

When these people leave having left comma

  • I'd love to see the episode when Dorothy appears as a mystery guest, soulier.

  • Comment removed

  • Thanx for posting this 1960 episode.

This is the fourth and last time that accident prone Arlene Francis appears on live TV in an eye patch. Years later, she appeared wearing sunglasses, but that is another story.

Ms Messick is a healthy girl. You'll notice that she stands eye to eye with six footer Daly.

In this period, WML had an affinity for groundbreaking women in careers usually associated with men. Ms. Messick, as we see, is still one of the more memorable.

  • Always enjoy reading your thorough information! Please do tell.. what's the sunglasses 'other story'?!

  • HAHAHA! John said, Please, this is a family program! LOL

  • May 29th, 1960

  • WML is one of the funniest shows ever!

    HAHA, Dorothy!:

"Do they ever come two-by-two? Heterosexually?"

    Bennett: "HEY!"

  • "Sometimes they take the bus." Haw!!

  • Bennett's writers were some of the most infamous homosexuals of the 20th century, he wasn't a prude.
