Beautiful songs like this one have versions by the singers who made the songs famous and versions by the songwriters. Incorporate both versions into the part of your mind that plays music constantly. Another fabulous pair of cover/original is Del McCourey/Richard Thompson of "1952 Vincent Black Lightning."
I saw a video of Arlo singing this song in 2006. I didn't recognize the guy singing (lol) although the voice was absolutely Arlo. I found an old video and watched it - I did recognized Arlo in that one haha - from 1978. I have always loved this song!

Back in the seventies, I saw this concert on PBS with my parents. (I was in my teens.) I knew Pete Seeger, but I had never heard of Arlo Guthrie. My mom explained, "His father wrote 'This Land Is Your Land." I got into the concert from the get-go, but when Arlo played this song, I recognized it from the radio, and I was hooked. Three plus decades later, I still am.
This is simply one of the greatest songs ever written . . . Steve Goodman could have written this and nothing else and he would have been hall of fame worthy . . . of course, he wrote many more brilliant songs . . . but the greatness of this song cannot be surpassed. This song IS America . . . and Arlo delivers it perfectly . . . as the song deserves!
@jubjub2112 - Well said; no topping that! Fortunately, the railroads did not disappear. I don't believe they ever will. I'm grateful since I'm married to a "trainiac" who rides the rails to places he could fly to much faster. Thank you, Steve Goodman, for writing this. Thank you, Arlo Guthrie, for recording it. Peace to ALL.
Saw him live in Santa Cruz, California. Was expecting a nice show but the show I saw was SPECTACULAR! Arlo still "has it". He is a great singer, story teller and of course funny. A great time was had by all.
Steve Goodman wrote the song, Arlo had the monster hit with it in 1972. Many other musicians covered the song later. The royalties from Arlo's hit enabled Steve to become a full time musician.
@karlmahlmann My all-time favorite Arlo song....thank you for posting...got to see Arlo at the American Gardens Theater at EPCOT at Walt Disney World a few years back....I was awe-struck! LOVE you ARLO!!!!
Do us a favor "cool" and go back to listening to your "cd quality" music of John Tesh, Yanni, Celine, and the soundtrack to Twilight, if you cant see this for the vintage posting it is...
we are all on board that southbound odyssey. Fellow travelers on board towards that setting sun.

From the number one Cubs fan of the last 50 years. Any team that has people like Steve Goodman rooting for it will always have hope.

As Pete Seeger told Arlo, "Folk Songs is serious." Just love Arlo's energy!

The young King sings under the gaze of the last honest man. Arlo brings me to tears everytime I hear his voice. Pure grace and beauty.
