That's one of the bravest and craziest things I've ever seen. Proof that those who say women can't handle fear and should be in the kitchen etc - should have their tiny balls ripped off. I was looking for the safety line, and of course there isn't one, because she's climbing all over two aircraft too quickly! Today they would demand she wears a high visibility jacket and a hard hat just to be near an aircraft wheel, never mind get in one!
This required at least two flights and transfers; there is no cameraman in the receiving Jenny's rear cockpit for the approach shots, but there must been one to film Gladys coming aboard. Pure Hollywood hokum, but what a gutsy babe! Gladys was one of many female barnstormers, some of whom were less lucky. Btw, does anyone have details of the shield on the side of the aircraft? On a good print I can see the name Julian, a star and a pair of wings, but the lettering at the bottom is illegible.
Brilliant! Yes,this was prior to the nanny state requiring people to fasten their seat belts and remain seated until the aircraft has come to a complete stop at the gate! LOL!!! :-D
The soundtrack is from one of the great humorous singers of the cylinder record days: Billy Murray, "Come Josephine, in my flying machine" released in 1911.
How does the risk of doing a mid-air transfer and climbing all over the aircraft at altitude compare to having the plane land with only one wheel? I think the one wheel landing would have been safer.
I thought she would transfer back to the first plane before landing!
@Splujer29 It's not a fake as you meant it, it was a movie, a short film to make the poeple go "WOW" when they see it on TV's or in the Cinema. This kind of movies made the Black Cats well known around the world in that Era.
@senseigrahamravey date relater makes a fair point in my opinion... he has nothing but good things to say of the lady performing the stunt.. he is simply stating a truth about things at the time.. no need to be so harsh .. all the best .. :)
This courageous woman--along with the rest of American women--was forbidden to vote until 1920, when the 19th Amendment was passed.
When Ms. Ingle performed this amazing feat of courage and selflessness--a few years earlier she wouldn't have been allowed to help choose her city councilman.
@DataRelater She certainly was courageous, but selfless? No. It was a stunt. There was a camera on every plane.
I admire her though. You wouldn't get me to do that, there are too many things that could go wrong, and I used to climb buildings with no accessories. She had real guts.
The idea of comparing and contrasting Scientology and psychiatry is almost pointless. The CoS doesn't oppose psychiatry for any legitimate reason, but instead because they made up stuff about psychiatry causing the Holocaust, 9/11 and so on, they also don't believe mental disorders exist. Comparing the origins, qualifications, differences, similarities and so on is pointless.
@DataRelater "This courageous woman--along with the rest of American women--was forbidden to vote until 1920, when the 19th Amendment was passed." I agree she was courageous, but I still can't figure out how we men lost on the sufferage vote.
If a wheel did fall off a plane like that, a good pilot would be able to land the plane without destroying it, by running on the one wheel until the plane slowed down.
That is some seriously crazy stuff. I used to fly ultralights and had a few crashes...but i wouldn't have ever attempted doing what she did! Hats off to her though for being so brave. I wonder if she ended up living a long and healthy life?
You really gotta hand it to those boys maintaining the airplane. There doesn't appear to be any oil or water blowing out with the exhaust. Or you'd see it trailing off & running down the fuselage. Which was Great for Gladys because that stuff is real HOT & extra slippery.
I see they really DID have crack in the 20s. However, GW tried to get us to do this at Spirit but when some mechanics balked at the idea, he just fired us all. The lil' Bahamian Sprinkle Genie thought it was a good idea too as long as he could send Big Cock out to do it. Oh well, ya can't fix everything w/a hammer and a piece of wood, huh?
Ive been pilot for 30 years and there is no way I could even stand on a wing let alone walk it , swap machine , walk it again then climb down the strut and fit a wheel!!
I would like to extend a huge thank you for posting this. Gladys was my great aun, I have seen still photos of some of her performances, however, I had no idea there was a film. She passed away in 1981 at the age of 82.
I think some of the footage of his flying was in the intro of the fall guy. I think he was flying the plane or on the ladder that went through the barn. There is also some famous footage of him flying aircraft and transferring to cars or other aircraft. He also would stage repairs for dramatics. I wonder if he was participating in these stunts?
After going skydiving I know that the force of the wind is a lot stronger than it looks from the video. She was very brave to do that and amazed at how she got that tire on!!
They did not have video cameras back in biplane days. Video cameras are "space age" technology. Cameras to record "motion pictures" (without sound) were still quite new, rare, and expensive at the time this sequence was filmed.
Clearly, this was a carefully staged stunt.
There is no chance you would get:
... an airplane losing a wheel near an airfield
... the "movie" camera at the airfield
... someone crazy enough switch planes in mid air with a spare wheel
It was still an amazing feat, no matter whether it was staged or not. She DID still switch planes in mid-air with a wheel on her back. No, they didn't have video cameras then, they had film cameras!
You are right! This is Gladys Ingle who performed with the 13 Black Cats! I know this because I am descended from motion picture aviator "Daredevil" DeLay. (This aerial sequence is also documented in the book Barnstormers & Daredevils.) Now you can perform the honoring of a famed title to your impressive video through a "Gladys Ingle of the 13 BLACK CATS" title!!!
There is no info on the clip but it is probably Gladys Ingle who was a plane change specialist and also shot arrows at a target from the top of the wing.
That's one of the bravest and craziest things I've ever seen. Proof that those who say women can't handle fear and should be in the kitchen etc - should have their tiny balls ripped off. Thanks for the video, which is an interesting old movie.
But it's a fake because why is there a video camera in the aircraft serviced ?
And when she changes the wheel, we can see that she doens't replace exactly the same, and when the plane lands, the two wheels are identical.

These days they use a fall protection harness.
It didn't look like she even had a backup parachute (though it could be stuffed in the front incognito)

If you like this you would probably enjoy Ormer Locklear There is a book about him and his stunts. "Locklear: The Man Who Walked on Wings"
He died in the movie "The Skywayman". He was blinded flying at night by the searchlights being used to illuminate his aircraft for filming.
The account of his death was in the documentary "HOLLYWOOD: Hazard of the Game "
