  • Isn´t the large pistol primer too soft for the big cartriges? I am aware there is no concern with your single shots, but would you still use LPP´s on a horizontal magazine like a 45-70 lever action?

  • @carlos45703030

Its what the Magtech 24 ga.case was made for and its specific do to the depth of the primer pocket. If you were using regular 45-70 brass you'd have to use rifle primer since thats what was needed due to the depth of the primer pocket.

  • Great video bro

  • ..the 'dross' too weighs a lot, I'm sure most of it is lead. On my next casting session, I'm planning to sit a small bundle of steel wire (from wire armoured cable) in the lead to dissipate the heat, I'm hoping I can just add or remove wires until it sits at about the right temp, we'll see! I'm currently shooting them as cast which is about .469". How many reloads do you get from your brass by the way?

  • @P1LGY No, I weighed them after I cast them, after casting I had 35lbs of bullets haha. I haven't shot them that much, but I've got 3 firings on the brass I have. After 3-4 firings with magtech cases you should anneal the necks again.

  • @ginsboy2003 I read some people were getting 3 firings, and since for me it's 52 pence/shot (assuming 3 firings of brass) and the brass makes up 33p of that, so I was keen to make the brass last. I'm still on my first box, they've had 3 firings, and they're looking good still. I'm annealing in between every shot at the moment, because the FL sizing die seems to do a lot of work on my brass...

  • @P1LGY I think you'll get a lot more than 3 firings from the cases. I think annealing is the key so your doing exactly what you need to be.

  • @P1LGY with magtech brass you need to FL resize becaue its balloon head if your using soild head then you can neck size with my jamison cases ive goten about 10 shots with neck sizing and annealing every 3 or 4 shots

  • Great video Darren, I especially enjoyed the casting bit, as that's something I haven't quite mastered yet. I struggle to get good mould fill-out and clean bullets. I've figured out the 'clean bullets' issue now I think, it appears my pot gets too hot, it's a Lee 4-20lb or something like that, I have it set to 2 or 3/10 and I'm sure it's too hot, I get nice 'clean' lead with a mirror surface when it's warming up, but then it goes purple/blue and I'm constantly skimming dross off...

  • @P1LGY I was having problems with proper fill out, but I got the mold and lead a little warmer and started using a ladle and I get better results. The faster I got the lead in there the better the results are. You actually need to learn your equipment so to speak. The heat setting my pot is on now is too hot for my little 30-30 bullet mold. At this setting they come out frosted instead of shiny like my MH bullets. I rarely skim the dross of when using clean lead ingots.

  • @ginsboy2003 I might try a ladle then, I've been using the bottom pour, but it isn't that slow, I have it set right up to max, so it drips a bit, but it does that when it's turned down too haha The other problem that has now appeared is the sprue plate bolt, it keeps coming undone, rather annoying, I think the lube was burning off, I have some high temp stuff to try, what do you use, if any?

  • Why didn't you machine holes in your sizing die to let the lube through?

  • @lugerstonecock I had thought about it and since I only had one Lyman 450 I figured if I applied the lube by hand and sized them I could leave the smokeless lube in the sizer. That way I could lube 100 Martini bullets with my blackpowder bullet lube and lube my 30-30 or 9mm bullets the next day without swapping lube in the sizer.

  • i do find them interesting and thank you very much, new sub one of the other reloaders would have sent me i think someone linked you recently

  • For the blocks to close properly they have to float on the handles. If you have a bunch of lead gooped in the channels the blocks probably arent floating and one side of the mould doesn't close up.

  • @teeroux

I bet thats probably what it is. They were perfect when I made them and for about the first 25lbs of bullets I cast from them. I'll take them apart on my first off day and give them a look.

  • ginsboy i love the viedos on the martini collection i should have all of them i hope, but just keep doing what you are doing as far as these old guns, and i have learned a lot of your ho to videos and iam just a hobist like you and we have to screw to learn,, iam a self tought mechinest like you,i just wont to say thanks. MITCH.

  • @catfish1057 I'm glad you like them, I try to do video's that aren't a repeat of whats already out there. Your quite welcome and when I join the gun range near me this spring I'll have a lot of shooting videos coming.

  • How many casings do you have to reload?

  • @AK107DX Most of my cases are loaded, I have about 10 empty now I need to load but only 75 total. I'm going to start buying a box of Magtech brass every month and form cases from it. I'd like to have about 200 cases on hand.

  • @ginsboy2003 As much reloading as you have to do, it's much better to shoot authentic ammo than rechambering the rifle for modern ammo.

  • @AK107DX

I agree, I have my costs for reloading the 577/450 ammo pretty low. The bullet mold was free so to speak and the bullets are nearly free. I'll get multiple loadings out of the cases. The whole process is actually fun and its satisfying to shoot the ammo I've loaded.

  • Great video man, I have watched the whole series.

  • Cool :-)
