welll .... Of course this guy can play jazz, but I wonder why he plays the beginning of Wes's solo, ... including some wrong notes. I consider that if he wants to show us that he knows the solo of Wes, he has to play it PERFECTLY CORRECT ....
More than that: when he finally starts his own improvisation, everything falls down, and then I wonder why he didn't keep playing Wes's solo instead of try to play faster than himself ...
@Fabiendegryse Because he is playing his rendition of the Wes tune. All of us know that this master can repeat note by note the whole tune, but he choose the other way to play it, showing some fresh scales and velocity. Remember it's not a competition against Wes, who was a jazzguitar God, It's just the moment of Pat performing. For me Wes still the best of the best, but I 'm open minded with another jazzguys.
I'm pretty sure Pat is using an Acoustic Image Clarus + into 2 closed back Marshall 4by12 cabs. I know he switches up from time to time. Last time u saw him that is what he had. This clip sounds like the Clarus +, great amp!
His playing is of course impeccable, but perhaps he seems to lack a certain emotional dimension. His playing is logical almost to a fault. Sometimes his obsessive strings of eighth notes creates a rhythmic stasis of sorts. He needs some of what Bill Frisell has, whatever that may be.
You can crucify me now, I have transgressed the name of a mighty "guitar god."
Martino is only human, after all. Aren't you glad that we have, for instance, Jim Hall?
@foomsbah this guy is one of the bluesiest jazz guitarists Ive ever heard. His phrasing and form all derive from the classic Wes Montgomery ,Jim hall era.Its jazz,if you don't like sixteenth notes and turns listen to slide guitar.
@foomsbah These are very good observations, so you will not be crucified alone as long as I am around. Martino is a monster, but Frisell has some sort of fire that makes even simple phrases burn a little hotter.
I saw this guy last night at Ronnie Scotts. Couldn't have been more than four feet away from him. Absolutely, mind blowing. The best gig I've ever been to EVER.
playguitarDOTcoDOTnz, you hit the nail on the head! Wes was such a perfectly evolved musician that you almost could not distinguish the head of the tune from his improvisations. No wonder Pat cites Wes as one of his main inspirations!
Sure. It is called Bock to Bock (written by Wes' brother Buddy). There is a great version of this tune on the album Grooveyard: Montgomery Brothers. It is really wonderful!
As much restraint as I've ever heard out of Martino. Such swing, such soul! F'ing beautiful!

Martino solo system is as follows:
Tease you with the blues and then lose you in the stratosphere of his imagination...a place where few if any beside him can go.

@Fabiendegryse I think it's silly to criticize someone on Pat's level, although I agree with quoting Wes's solo perfectly. Pat is a GREAT player!

He is very down to earth and sincere. He is a total universal type of player.

I liked his old sound with the Gibson L5-S.

My favorite Jazz guitarist of all time, his improv on "Impressions" from the album "consciousness"
is absolutely ART.

I once had a lesson with him and he said there are no irrelevant notes. That's what Jazz is about.

He needs to have a talk with my band director because he doesn't seem to understand that... Pat is exactly right...

Probably about 90% of that solo is exactly what Wes played. Obviously Pat has transcribed it.
I guess it shows that Wes' solos were so lyrical they became an essential part of the song.
The Groove Yard album this song is from is my favorite Wes album.
