  • Only God can give a voice like his! He will always be my favorite Tenor!

  • I love you, Mario Lanza. Even if you smoke.

  • I had such a crush on Mario way back when.

  • to me, the greatest singer, tenor. the most personal, which can't be practiced. i was introduced to him by my mother. ha! i think she was tired of listening to me playing loud rock n roll in my room. he had this definite signature that stood out from the rest.

  • To me one of the greatest singers of all time. Every word he sang came from his heart! I love this song and street where you live! Such God Givewn talant.

  • I have listened to many different tenors but nobody can portray a song better than Mario Lanza. Also his voice seems to have that certain cut that makes it immediately stick out to you. Also nobody can sing high notes as clear as Mario Lanza... he has the perfect balance!

  • hihi ich bin blond

  • @gragrn Mario makes the hairs on the back of my neck tingle. Wat a voice. .Pavorotti was v. different. Their two styles R v. different and I think they could not both hav sung the same songs . Love them both 4 different reasons.!

  • People may have joked about him, calling him Mario Labonza or Mario Lasagna because of his struggles with his weight problem, but such joking ceased quickly after his untimely death at age 38. In an odd sense he is a male counterpart to Karen Carpenter; two talents cut down in their primes, due to health problems somewhat attributable to emotional difficulties in their lives. He could have left us much more had his life run a more natural span, but what he DID leave us, is excellence.

  • @therealjoebloggs i would offer, respectfully, that the derision and refusal to accept his talent continues to this day, more than 50 years after his death. god forbid that the "know-it-alls" might ever admit they were wrong. instead, we welcome bocelli and credit him for bringing opera to the common man, the very thing we refused to allow lanza to do. THAT is what killed him.

  • While so many seem to compare Lanza with major Opera stars, whatever defects are in Mario's voice they are nothing since he was a truck driver with no voice training. He was discovered by Hollywood and that was the direction he went.... money, fame etc. Had he been trained for opera from youth like the others mentioned he might have been the worlds greatest tenor replacing Caruso and dwarfing Pav, Gedda, Carreras etc..

  • 14 people need hearing aids.

  • My grandmother loved Mario Lanza, she always said 'No-one sings like Mario' and this song always reminds me of her. I love it too, brings back a lot of happy memories.

  • superstar

  • Mario was great in his field-but Paverotti sang the classics better! Why? Listen to them both. Mario was the undesputed king of popular songs, but 'Pavvers' sounded out of place trying to sing the same stuff as Mario, yet he is light years in front of Mario on the classics because of better phrasing, diction, intonation, and in depth interpretation.

  • @123tromboneman i am going to propose that your comment actually supports my opinion that lanza was the better of the two. let's "score" them. according to your evaluation, lanza scores 100 for popular songs and pavarotti scores 100 for opera. however, while pavarotti scores 0 for popular music, you cannot give lanza the same score for opera. so, pavarotti's total score is 100 while lanza's score is somewhere between 100 & 200. think about it.

  • Pavarotti, Caruso, Domingo had nothing on Lanza..the power of his voice was incomparable!

  • .........I have loved Mario Lanza since I was 16 years old. My then boyfriend ( later husband ) copied very song he sang. We later divorced but he went on to become a magnificent singer...we are now 66 years old and all these years he has been singing...recorded Be My Love on his album....to this day, when I listen to him sing Be My Love, I hear Mario Lanza.....still makes me cry..

  • I was brought up on this kind of music, and todays music is totally repulsive, if music stil had class and gumption such as this, i personally believe our world would be a better place. oh and im 21, lolololol

  • @bobwinkerbean I totally agreee with you. My mother used to make us listen to this kinda of music and I'm so glad I did. The older I got, the more I appreciated it. I used to have all his movies on 8 track, but since moving have lost them. God, I wish I had them now.

21....good for you for loving this kind of music!!! :)

  • @themsbadgurl Thnk yoo :)

  • WAT A SONG WAT VOICE WISH WE HAD MUSIC LIKE THIS TODAY!>

  • Phenomenally sung the song. It shows all the technical artistry and beauty of voice. It's one of my favorites. A Mario Lanza sings it in a unique and characteristic way.

  • Sublime!!! SUperb!!! oh the years have passed, indeed.

  • brought back so many wonderful memories jass

  • brought back so many wonderful memories

  • Absolutely gorgeous!

  • stunning... and when he reaches that note at the end, it's simply breathtaking!

  • WONDERFUL AND GREAT MARIO!!!!

  • My god, this is the version that has resonated in me since childhood! I cannot thank you enough for this rediscovery {for me}. It is exactly how I remember it! God bless YouTube.

  • And to think this is the "inferior" coca cola show version of this song

  • The last note is a high C. My dad has sung this song several times.

  • I <3 50th !!

  • Its very very beautiful. The voice

  • His most popular? Only his music can speak for him. Who can doubt?

  • It's a C, alright.

  • Mario! the world's "greatest" tenor!

  • It is a high c,beautiful!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • I was a High F in the last note of the song that Lanza sang which was one note above High C

  • him and katherine jenkings what a duo

  • He died pretty much the same way Micheal Jackson did. Poor Bastard didn't live to see 40.

  • I just learned my grandfather grew up next door neighbors to Lanza in South Philly. Said he was a fun guy with a ton of character (and a little bit of a prankster) in addition to his impeccable voice!

It's one of the greatest shames he did not get to live longer!

  • Lanza Had a much stronger voice and better control than Bochelli

  • I really enjoy Andrea Bochelli and class him as one of my favourite tenors; but i do have to say Mario Lanza has such a powerful voice and sings a good selection songs; therefore, i would have to put him down as one of my favourites as well

  • Re the comment about lip-synching. Only once did he ever lip-synch a TV appearance and it was unheard of that time. That type of cheating came much later!

  • The best of the greatest!

  • The most magnificent expression of the passion of love.

  • The best!!!!

  • Frissons

  • это моя самая- самая любимая песня 20 века!И самый гениальный исполнитель!

  • A true high "C."

  • QUE Opera mas linda!

  • MARIO LANZA - ALL TIME GREAT TENOR!

Mario Lanza was in retrospect one of the Great Tenor Singers of all time! In my youth, he enjoyed world-wide acclaim! He deserves to be ranked right up there with more recent Opera Greats like Luciano Pavarotti!

His voice was a thing of beauty!

This song "Be My Love" was his classic and he sings it here LIVE in an incomparable performance! Wow! This is really beautiful!

  • @jefflevin7 - THis is not live. TV and move performances were always lip-synched. He is wonderful! Gorgeous color and fluidity.

  • he s not Ray Liotta?closely resembles

  • @melian39 Pues no es Ray Liotta, es el gran MARIO LANZA. ¿Y ante una voz como ésta solo se te ocurre decir que se parece a Ray L.?

  • MASTER

  • Effortless and beautiful.. my dad use to listen to him every day, almost all the time he was at home so we all grew up singing his songs. When friends came over and the music was playing and we were walking around doing chores singing, they looked at us like "what is wrong with you guys, who of your generation sings/listens to this?" Today I collect him, his voice, songs, style, it's like hearing family when I hear him, and even my older bro was named after him :-)) Genius!!

  • That note IS a high C - not higher... Lovely as it is, Mario does it justice!

  • Elvis loved singers who had that certain something, and who could reach and touch an audience. Mario Lanza was like that, and Elvis loved this guys incredible voice. Lanza heard of Elvis` admiration, and was quick to return the compliment.

  • It was a C, beautifully turned over!

  • ELVIS AND LANZA MET BRIEFLY WHILST BOTH WERE RESIDING AT HOLYWOOD.

LANZA WAS APPROX 15 YEARS ELVIS' SENIOR.

HE WAS ONE OF ELVIS' SINGING IDOLS.

TRAGIC THAT LANZA DIED AT 38 AND ELVIS AT 42!!

  • Gorgeous. He has to be the most underrated singer of all time.

  • breathtaking :) he makes me fall in love with him, again and again... !!!! (L)

  • My mother made me play him late at night when she came home from the bar, I hated it then....I LOVE it now, I listen and remember her.

  • What a voice.

  • the last note is C#.

  • the REAL IRONY HERE is that this is a live performance, which all the nay-sayers loved to comment that he was incapable of doing. enough said.

  • Fantastic!! A real singer thanks for posting !!

  • for my mother Thank you <3 be my love<3

  • Mamma <3

  • 8 people have no taste.

  • 8 people clicked dislike on this???!?! huh??

  • thats wat u call an art - ist? xD

  • I can,t help admiring his voice!!!It is perfect!!!

  • Great voice!!Great Artist!!!Great!!

  • here is another perspective. as a trained musician who has perfect pitch, i find the key of d-flat very "rich" and a wonderful vehicle for mario's fabulous voice. in the original recording, the jeff alexander singers introduce the c-major section and then provide back-up throughout the rest of the arrangement. it appears that in this performance, mario sang to the orchestra tracks without the choir. i would appreciate other assessments. best to all

  • It is the high C

  • @mactopolis High C,Yes.I sing this also to high C.Would like to sing on a "tribute consert" about this great tenor.I sing Be my love and O sole mio.

You can se that on youtube....

  • co nota, - to požitek- nádhera!

  • wonderfull , magic , superb.

  • In my eyes the best opera, belcanto and music hall singer of all time.

This song he sang many times for his wife.

    RIP.

  • I LOVE THIS SONG AS ALL OF HIS MUSIC THIS IS WHAT YOU CALL MUSIC

    WONDERFUL!!!

  • Fantastico.................

  • oh my god... it's so beautifull...

  • World's Greatest Tenor!

  • lol, love how he just flicks the cigarette then launches into the climax of the song!!! :D

  • Your probably singing to God right about now with that beautiful voice.

    =.]

  • look at his face dam those r some best expressions face ive seen i can hi emotions

  • Love the song, and when I was young I had such a crush on Mario Lanza...

  • superb i'm writing this with tears in my eyes my dad used to sing this he introduced this man to me .............incredible

  • Sweet!

I found this song in the 1951 chart @ billboardvideos.(net)

  • Mario was the best :-)

  • I just introduced my Grandfather to youtube, this was his first video, and he was wall impressed, thanks....

  • Simply the best!

  • That' last note... has to be higher than a High C.. anyone know what it is?

  • @Solison It's a C

  • @Solison

The sheet music I have for this is in G major but I doubt he would be singing a G. Without piano next to computer I wouldnt be able to tell as dont have perfect pitch. And I wont be able to hold my relative pitch until I get back in because will hear other things in the meantime lol, Hope someone else helps you

  • @Solison The last note is High C.

  • @Solison

  • @Solison actually, this incredibly beautiful orchestration makes use of an interesting musical "device". many "pop" arrangements include a "modulation" to a higher key in the final chorus. this arrangement modulates to a lower key. it begins in the key of d-flat and modulates "down" to the key of c-major. so, the final note sung by mario is indeed a high-"c". if i have not explained this well enough, please let me know.

  • @Solison ya, it's vitamin D

  • @Solison ya, it's vitamin D

  • @Solison That IS a high C - not higher.. Mario does a great job in hitting it that we tend to think it's higher. I just had my wife go to the piano and there it was.. High C

  • @Solison A High C.

  • @Solison : I think it is exactly a High C.

  • @Solison

    It's an E. just about

  • @Solison It's a C. He just does it so brilliantly, it sounds higher. Chills!!!

  • @Solison He was one of the very few who could hit a high C over C and still do it with power Caruso struggled his whole career to hit a real good C voice wise I have never heard a tenor as great as Lanza...Pavrotti said this also.

  • @Solison : it is a high C, not higher

  • @Solison

an e-flat?! i think. goodness it's unimaginable how he does it without constricting his nards. i'm full of awe

  • it is a high C

  • @Solison Thank You all For the replies :)

  • @Solison It's a C5.

  • @Solison No its a C, C5 to be exact

  • Komischer weise sterben alle gute Tenorsänger zu früh.....Rudolf schock, josef schmidt ,Wunderlich,Mario Lanza.............................Will Gott die besten alle für sich??

Man hört heutzutage kaum noch solche Sänger

  • @59uschi And the best Latvian tenor Jānis Zābers (1935 - 1973), too.

    Though not "komischer weise".

  • WONDERFUL!!!!

  • the great ronnie james dio was inspired vocally by this man. love it.

  • I would argue that Caruso or even Roy Orbison were better.

  • He shouldn't have had opera aspirations, as he sung this kind of thing so much better. But he was obsessed with trying to count as a 'real opera tenor'. He gave so many ppl so much joy in singing this kind of stuff, what's wrong with that? He doesn't have to qualify among the Carusos, Bjoerlings and Di Stefanos, he did this and he sure as hell was good at it.

  • OMG this reminds me so much of my dad, i lost his in 2003 aged 85, he was a wonderful dad, I miss him so much. They sure don`t make music like this amymore. I wish we could go back in time and have some decent mussic instead of the rubbish the knock out these days, ten a penny.

  • I grew up hearing my dad sing along with Mario Lanza.....This man evokes so many wonderful childhood memories.... Both his, and my dad's voice continue to ressonate in my heart.

  • gma2441 I can't believe anyone would compare him with

Sam Cooke. It's not even the same ball park

  • beautifully done.Mario Laanza the greatest

  • @pogi022534 No Caruso.. Pavarotti even said "Caruso is the base of the building for all tenors."

  • no sam cooke but its goodish

  • Comment removed

  • Much too early to leave us

God needed him more i guess

  • Had such a powerful and excellant voice.

  • The greatest tenor that ever lived was Caruso. Mario was great , but not as great as Enrico. Listen on you tube.

  • fantastic , a true master of song, my dad loved him , both gone now but never ever forgotten .xxx

  • He was just breathtaking, as I learned from my mom. Every year at Christmas she would play his version of O Holy Night throughout the holiday season.

  • Be MY LOVE Mario!!!!!...WOW..goosebumps....Damn!...they dont make em like that anymore ;) <3

  • Great voice indeed.

  • What a voice!! What a romantic song...

  • my dads favorite song sadley he passed away 10 years ago but as soon as i hear it think of the use to sing this all the timw

  • @WASYLCIW My dad also loved this song and Mario Lanza. I just emailed it to my sister; luckily, we were exposed to lots of great music, thanks to daddy.

  • Ahhh .. no words are able to express my feelings .. to his voice.. am 67 yrs .. brings back memories... well done Mario!

  • Hermosa cancion magnífico interprete a quien recordaremos siempre

    Saluda 8Romantica

  • Like wow..that's beautiful.

  • what a singer

  • Mario was awesome! Elvis was inspired by him and you can tell!

  • @dannyvanore

Elvis? In what way? Enunciation, voice quality, repertoire choice, image, amount of formal training? Apples and oranges, although Elvis was excellent at what he did.

  • @foxyzzzzz One thing about Mario that I do know is that he absolutely hated formal training, he was a natural who just wanted to get in front of an audience and sing. I believe he and Elvis had the same kind of charisma. I get my info about Mario from good sources.

  • @dannyvanore No, Elvis loved Mario. Used to watch his movies all the time and loved his voice (I read it in a couple books actually). That was his main influence for recording It's Now Or Never and Surrender. Apples and oranges are both fruit! To answer your question, I guess some of his repertoire choices and image.

  • @dannyvanore Ironic you should mention Elvis - perhaps no star paralled Mario Lanza more than Elvis. Both died young (Elvis was 42; Lanza 38). Both had problems with overeating, and both men were addicts (Elvis to prescription drugs and Lanza to alcohol.) Both men have often been considered as the greatest singers of their time - perhaps no one has been praised by more entertainers than Lanza; it's unfortunate that he was his own worst enemy.

  • @jimraw1 Yep, unfortunately both of them!

  • Beautifully sung!

  • Wow that was awesome, I'm a singing impressionist in Las Vegas and he's my next impression ( I hope LOL ) Does anyone know where I can find the instrumental version of this song ?

  • Mario Lanza...greatest natural voice of the 20th Century. Mario needed only one take to record this despite the fact that he supposedly had "tied one on" the night before. The story goes that he was tossed in a shower and came on stage more sober and somewhat wet and as stated took just one take to record this. A true natural. The applause at the end is irritating as it covers up the last portion of his high C.
  • My Dads favourite. brings back great memories of him.

  • What a glorious, emotional voice! What a shame he was never in opera. (At least they had REAL singers, once upon a time...)

  • I had problems finding notes of this song, and then I had to write it "up" so I could sing the high C. At last, here it is. They say this song was made for Lanza, and he is great.I also like Domingo in it,(he does not sing the high C.) I would love to sing on "Memorial conserts" some of the songs Mario Lanza sang. In "Mini conserts" I sing La donna e mobile,O sole mio,(with a high C) Torna a Surriento,Nessun dorma and Be my love. Also

(Arias from Tosca and Tosti songs....)
