hey smarty, i said ON AVERAGE, as in people without mental deffects. A couple suggestions if you end up doing this again (I know it's too late to help with the project you originally made this for)

1: Don't freeze it. The jar cracks due to thermal shock which happens from something changing temperatures too fast. In fact, warming the glass would be more effective at preventing cracks.

2: The water's actually acting as a heat sync to slow the temperature change.

3: If the flame's going out, try enlarging the hole to improve the fuel:oxygen ratio.

if u put the bottle in the fridge and it is like realy cold it will easy be destryed cus there will a big difference in temperature....just like melting metals, they furst burn it then cool it and burn it again, and again and again, to melt it or deform it ....... also u must start the project by first slightly heating the jar.. and if u want to prevent the jar to shatter or just destroy put in a bowl with a little bit warm water.

Next time you make a pulse jet, the jam jar jet in particular, try using STP anti-freeze. It contains methyl-alcohol which will work very well with this project.

This doesn't make you a nerd, it's actually mechanics. I'm 13 and I'm making one to. It's actually called a "Jam jar PULSE jet engine" I'm making one to power a lego car down the hall at school. I'm wondering if I could do it with the jar on it's side.

Use a clean fuel like methanol and you wont get any smoke.

Also, don't freeze the jar. Freezing it increases the shock to the glass when you light it so it's a lot more likely to break.

Great instructional video!. We built one too...and ran into the same problem with getting it started...I think the jar was a bit too cold and we found that only putting the jar in the freezer for about 2-3 min kept it from cracking.

lol? first of all, you dont need the pipe thing, second. DONT PUT THE GLASS IN THE FRIDGE!!! then it will brak faster because of the temperature difference, put the glass in hot water, then it will burn much longer. third how to videos already exist....
