Friendly advise=)i always found keeping it slow and stedy sumtims better & having & teaching some nowlag of bars, crochets, quavers etc. can help and counting in the traditional sense of 1+2+3+4+ for a 4/4 beat isnt hard to learn but is a good help hope i helped and i dont mean to be pushy n aragent

when you count generally you count the snare on 2 and 4. You almost always hit on 2 and 4 unless your doing off beats.

Your right a great coach or teacher does not have to be a great player in music or sports.

You are a super teacher, as far as format goes the drummer is the leader AND the follower, he leads in, leads out, and keeps the motor running in the middle, fills ,innovates, all the while staying consistent and adapts to a free flowing live jam all in one song.
