I don't understand how you get the timeline on the composite window. This happens when you are describing the ripple effect. On the normal composite window there is no ripple short cut on the bottom of the window.

So I'm trying to watch my video in the adobe thing you described as a player. I play it, and it has extreme lag, I think, the video runs at 1.7fps/25fps and it states that the video is "(NOT realtime) in the preview section the settings are RAM preveiw options frame rate: 60 skip: 0 resolution: Auto. is there anyway to fix this? thanks for the help.

Omg...why are the files always like 2gb to 20gb big that's so ridiculous...I tried all the stuff which was told me in other tutorials on how to render and rerender and do stuff in sony vegas or encoder programms and all that stuff and guess what nothing worked. they made after effects so much more complicated then they should have : / why couldnt they just make the ripple tool the insert tool or something? or why even have one? you should be able the drag the clip and just drop it in between the two. and i hate how when you split it, one is above the other. why cant they be on the same row but like a line between them.. ugh. so much un-necessary stuff.

If you don't have the Two tools, its because thenewboston already opened his footage file at the start and he just clicks on to it. You Need to click Window, Footage, then Drag your video into footage and there will be the two tools.

omg... why is after effects so complicated.. it's like impossible to understand my video clip.. first of all it shows like it has 10fps.. and it's going slowly, but in normal the video has 30fps.. and when im looking at the timeline of my video, it's impossible to understand anythign at all.. to find the end of the video clip i had to drag the video a lot.. and the zooming in the timeline is stupid.. it zooms out to 30s, and when i shorten the video clip's end it all just went gone....

This is similar to splitting clips. You can drag the front or back to align then drag the clip to where you want. this is just a diff view where you see the stuff you don't want. what if you wanted the same clip on the same layer but just repeat 4 times? argggggg Prob just copy n paste, eh?

@temper1famas just split the layer once before the beginning of the part you want to cut out, and split it again after the part you want to cutout. then delete the layer containing the part you wanted to cut.

@temper1famas Maybe try splitting the layer at the point you want to start cutting (EDIT, SPLIT LAYER) and then again at the point where you want to stop. This will cut your clip into three layers and you can delete the one you don't want.

...OR...

At the beginning of the part you don't want you can slide the thing at the ends of the clip (in the timeline window) to shorten your layer from either end instead of splitting it again into a third layer.

You can extend the timeline when you create a new composition with Ctrl + N or Composition, new composition and a new window pops up and in the bottom of the windows there is duration thats the place you can extend it

Just go to Window > Workspace > Reset "Standard" > Discard Changes

There are two ways to solve this (actually both are shown in TheNewBoston's tutorials)

way 1:

Go to window and click tools, now you should see your toolbar again.

If that didn't work, and I don't see why that would be, then try this:

way 2:

step 1: window>workspace>all panels (now you have all your panels so you can reset them all) step 2: window>workspace>reset all panels (this should bring back the default layout of After Effects )

Just by looking a little closer at the tutorial you can find out that the ripple and overlay buttons appear on the "FOOTAGE" panel, not in the composition. You have to double click the video clip in the PROJECT PANEL in order to see the FOOTAGE and from there you can ripple or overlay de clip, which will crate a new layer in the COMPOSITION.
