I'm glad this is one of the 1st songs I can remember hearing on AM radio, and not some shit like Lady Gaga or Minaj. So easy to sing to, uplifting and a happy tune. Killer guitar riff.
Sometimes they lipsync their own material, but I have to say, if this is live, I'm extra impressed. He did a good job of staying true to the sound and feel of the older recordings. Sometimes new performances of old songs sound like cheap and tawdry nightclub renditions where it goes "something like this", not "exactly like this".
Trivia: He recorded the original song in 2 takes with no overdubs, playing an organ that Kris Kristofferson & Rita Coolidge got him for a wedding present.
This wasnt BILLY'S Band, he probably hasnt toured for a long time. This is probably a stage band that had to learn all the acts materials at the time. I think they are great
For as old as this song is and how long it has been since Billy cut it originally, his voice has never changed and sounds pretty much the same which is incredible
@Mattea68 - I am equally in awe at how fantastic he sounds! I put his original of this on my 1974 playlist & started a list for Billy as well.
My channel is a music archive of 450 public playlists honoring over 300 artists and every year since 1900, so you can listen like you've stepped back in time! With 40 songs on my '74 playlist so far, I can be a high school senior again for almost 2 hours!
As a musician and a lover of this song, I can only complain about the bass player. In the beginning, he rode a single root note, instead of playing a one-two like it should have been. Also the note at the very end should have ended on the low root note instead of the high. The bottom end from that note really sweetens the ending like the original. Call me mr perfectionist!!
Billy you still sound great after all the years i want to know where were you when my kids needed a dad back in 1977 i played and danced to I Can Help over and over again all by my self that song made me feel good thank you
I enjoyed seeing this. Was it aired, or is one of the unaired DVD tracks?
This is the first time I have seen Donnie Garvin NOT play the guitar part as well or better than the record. (The opening riff is harmoninzing strings, not a single note at a time. There is a Reggie Young video on YouTube showing how to play.)

Why is the keyboard player staring so intently at the sheet music all through the song? Did he not know it?
