Thanks, I need to get my capture tools working properly. XVidCap seems to crash leaving me to kill the process about 70 percent of the time. I'll certainly give the first two a try.
Very likely. It seems they should have been part of the dependencies on the package, however, especially if it causes a crash. (Not the fault of xvidcap, but rather the packagers)
Also, I tried to find what was missing, but couldn't figure out what files to install in order to get the proper codecs.
This is where dependencies versus options gets complicated with binaries. If they compiled it on a system with all the codecs as long as anyone else has all the codecs it will work with all the codecs. However it will work without all the codecs as long as a person chooses a codec they have.
The virtual machine trick was nice. In addition to capturing video, it would be nice to also simultaneously record all the sounds the are playing through ALSA into the video stream, but I'm not sure if that's even possible...
I use several programs, and admittedly rely on a mac at times. I'm a system administrator by day for an all Macintosh school -- so I have access to lots of Macs.
The thing I love though, is that I have to use either VLC or Kino to embed the Linux Journal logo. :D
KDEnlive looks promising for video editing, but it always takes me much more time when using that or Kino for the rough edits.
My goal from the git-go was to be completely Linux based in all my editing. Hopefully I'll get there. :)
missed out on a good occasion to show how to use vncviewer to connect to aunt hilda's computer in Tennessee or wtvr. it's really easy too... if you can get to tell your aunt how to open ports on her linksys. but after that it's free flying.

Could the reason xvidcap crashed be because you didn't have the codec libs it needed to do those conversions?

Starting with Ubuntu 8.04 gtk-recordMyDesktop stopped crashing on me! Plus you now can import ogg Theora directly to youtube!
But that reminds me - what do you use for cutting your videos, Shawn?
