I`ll tell you what. Big bad red army was in USSR. It never left. In Afghanistan, there were fighting at maximum 120 000 troops.
It is 1/40 of the size of Red Army!
Just 2.5%.
They couldn't send more due to political reasons.
Also they couldn't use nuclear and thermo-nuclear weapons there. If they did like US in Japan, the Afghanistan would be a dead piece of land for hundreds of years.

Well, you think that they had to stay and slaughter more people like NATO does right now ? At least during soviet afghan war, by the 8th year they were about to leave (nato isn't) and also soviets were totally controlling Kabul (capital city) and other major cities, building hospitals, roads and highways.
