I really like Joanna Newsom's music, everything from her self-distributed albums to her latest EP. That being said, so what if Laura was heavily influenced by Joanna? I bet Joanna Newsom, being the awesome person that she is, would be happy for her. I really like Laura Groves'/Blue Roses' music.
I feel sorry for female vocalists because it seems that they get pigeonholed a lot more than male vocalists. Just because Joanna and Laura both have a high range and quirky phrasing doesn't mean they are the same or that one is ripping the other off. They both have completely different voices.
The only similarity to me is the way that Laura fingerpicks her guitar is similar to how a harp harp but that's a technique, not an artistic invention.
I think her voice resembles Bjork more than Joanna. Give her some credit, at least she isn't trying to be like the Kate Nash/Lilly Allens of this world and doing her own thing. Unless you feel this girl poses a threat to Joanna then dont bother slagging her off.

(Or this near namesake "Joanna Newsome" person) the reason I assumed you were pigeon holing is I really struggle to see how Ms Groves really sounds much like her at all bar the superficial factors I mentioned. I'd say Laura Grove's music was more traditional, less overtly quirky and her voice was more conventionally appealing rather than Joanna's "acquired taste" vocals.
