beautifully shot but leaves an "and what" aftertaste. A little bit cheap, may be, a little bit of speculation.

That seems to be an issue with today cinematography in Russia. Nice camera work, but still have to find what to apply it to.

I may be wrong. Or generalizing too much. But this is what I see.

well, to me it wasn't meant to be a story with a beginning, middle and end. It was just a snapshot of day-to-day life through the eyes of a child.

Remarks: This short is set during the Great Patriotic War (WWII), during which the Soviet Union suffered shortages of both food and husbands. Likewise, the title "mjaso" means not only meat but flesh as well. The meat during these times very often came from horses.

Notice also the tolling of churchbells in the opening. At the height of the Nazi invasion Stalin --- rather shrewdly --- allowed churches to stay open.
