I remember watching this awful colored, B&W, or sepia commercial on the big Magnavox color TV when I was in the 1st grade. Strange now. By the way, Hamilton, Joe Frank, & Reynolds consist of three guys, but Reynolds would leave the group and was replaced by Tom Dennison. Pardon my Dick Clark-type music knowledge!
Nope. They usually show up tattered and haggard, invariably played on low-quality ceramic tables with awful compliance. Even unopened - not that uncommon - they're worth about as much as a a copy of Rumours or Eagle's Greatest Hits. Read: literal pocket change!
I think "Goofy Greats" was the first K-Tel record , per se , that I owned. All the cool kids would bring the current hits on 45s when our music teacher would let us listen to records , on Fridays. I'd bring "Goofy Greats ". They were "cool" about it . But , I'll still take "Surfin' Bird" AND "Yummy , Yummy , Yummy" over the 1975 - 76 Top 40 , any day....
Wow, I remember this ad. I found an old 45 record in someones garage awhile ago, I gave it to my 8 year old neice. I told her it was a prehistoric CD, she didn't even blink. I must be oooold.
@clintonearlwalker No , it does'nt. This was the first K-Tel record my Brother had , he got it for Christmas , and we'd both listen to it ,but , GOD ! I THINK I MADE IT THRU THE WHOLE THING , ONCE. I was 8 or 9 years old , I did'nt have the attention span for it. I can listen to it all , NOW. The Fortunes were playing near my hotel in Vegas in 2000,with ONE original member. I opted to go to sleep , instead.
@pfordsq I think I have 2 K-Tel records. "Goofy Greats" and "Superstars Greatest Hits". Superstars is a great album, or at least it was about 35 years ago. Long Cool Woman in a Black Dress is the first song, that was back when that tune was pretty new. Dr. Hook, "The Cover of the Rolling Stone" was another song, there were some decent ones on it, not really my type of music, but good songs anyway. It was a gift someone gave me. I remember 1972 "Popcorn", I was 11.
I am sure those horrible K-tel pressings are really making good use of it too. I think a BSR with a "flipper" stylus was what most K-Tel records were played on.
I remeber there was QUITE a difference between the KTel collections and the Ronco collections. Many of the songs on the Ronco collections were cut off about 3/4 of the way through. That almost never happened on K-Tel, but if such a thing existed, they'd ALWAYS put the shorter version on K-Tel collections.
There were TV ads for this and many other compilations albums throughout the '70's and 80's.. I was able to get K-Tel's Rock 80, The Rock Album, and Certified Gold on 8-Track before 8-Tracks became obsolete. Not to mention a K-Tel Disco Album on CD. How I'd love to have the others on CD.

To the people arguing if Hamilton, Joe Frank, and Reynolds is either 2 guys or 3 or wat their names are.. its Hamilton, Joe Frank, and Reynolds.

I had a bunch of them at one time. Figure there's probably a collecter for everything.

Would the K-tel LPs from the '70s be considered collector's items?

Great ad. But , I don't know which is funnier , a picture of a stack of pancakes for Hot Butter's "Popcorn", or "LOBBO !!".
pfordsq 10 months ago
@pfordsq Now that you mention it, a stack of pancakes doesn't really fit with a song called "Popcorn" does it?

Great seeing these again. I can't tell you how many of these collections I had. The one that stands out most though is Goofy Greats.

@shmul9: I have this and 3 other K-Tel albums. Whenever possible, K-Tel cut out the songs' intros and fade-outs.

I still have this one. Love the extremely short version of "Layla" NOT!
Hey I was 8 years old, couldn't wait to get to Woolworth's and pick it up.

@briwolfe1 K-Tel edit...lol How long does "Layla" last on this record? I'd like to know.
Those compilations were pretty neat though :)

@dummytree I had the album. Layla was the longest track on it... probably about 3 minutes!

@centervilletn K-Tel wasn't exactly state-of-the-art quality, but the concept of adding 20-25 songs on one album was a novelty at the time.
