Geedy himself said that "we will pay the price, but we will not count the cost" is one of his favorite lyrics. I've always loved "roll the bones" and think it got a bad rap as "the dark album." These songs about fate, randomness and chance are beautiful.
@hogwild6161 - I'm in it with you, this is one of their very best and in fact, Geddy feels the same way about it. It is indeed powerful, POWERFUL stuff!
May Rush forever inspire teenage boys to turn Mom's basement into a practice space - and to play smart, heartfelt , imaginative rock. May they forever inspire old guys to keep doing that. (Okay, you can move out of Mom's house ...)
this is my opinion of course...but this is the absolute best song ever written. I've thought this for eight years now. I listen to TONS of music...but this is the one song I ALWAYS come back to.
WOW. Saw this tour in Monteal in 1991. Alex Lifeson's guitar work brings chills in last minute and a half.... AWESOME. I Love This Band. Long live Rush!!! Hope they tour soon.
@jsw6810 They are touring now. I seen them last Aug. and am seeing them again in June. They, in my opinion are the best band to see live. Absolutely remarkable.
How can such stunningly beautiful and true lyrics be accompannied by music flawlessly embodying emotions uncommonly felt through any other form of art, literature, or experience? Oh wait this is RUSH. Sorry everybody i just answered my own question.
Like Simple Minds, Rush is without equal. Ged, Alex and Neil compliment each other beautifully and fully. There's a reason they've been friends for so long...and it's that friendship between the three men that exists beyond the music. It is the music that binds them. All three members of this band are undervalued in a society that thinks Justin Bieber or Susan Boyle constitute talent. These men are virtuosos ahead of their time. The message is the key. Listen!
@shavepate You're more than welcome. Most of the time I have Graffiti Soul or Moscow Underground. Of their old stuff, mostly Up on the Catwalk, Colours Fly and Catherine Wheel, Theme for Great Cities, or Someone, Somewhere In Summertime. C Moon is one of my faves.
@shavepate Nope. Jim's lyrics are just as profound as Neil's and Charlie's music is just as intricate as Ged and Alex's. It seems both The Minds and Rush have always gotten the short end of the stick and neither have been accepted as the true artisans they are. Somehow they've both managed to 'Stay Visible' (Simple Minds reference) yet under the radar. I find Alex and Charlie comparable as well as Mel and Neil. As lead singers, Jim Kerr and Geddy Lee are unmatched. Too bad Jim doesn't play bass.
Rush is one of the best rock bands ever. I like them so much, even I like them more than Led Zeppelin or similar bands. My favourite three - Jimi Hendrix, Rush, Type O Negative.
Rush would be one of the few bands I trust to "actually play" their own music, as opposed to using cheesy backing tracks (like practically all "performers" these days).
That said, where are the synthesizers and harmony vocals coming from in this performance?
rush simply couldn't exist without those specific 3 guys, in the sense that they have found that magical synergy, all excellent and accomplished in their own right, not just technically, but in texture and mood.. WHICH, by the way, ALEX is the master link in the chain... I like to think of it this way....alex is the glue that allows the incomprehensible talents of lee and peart to meet in the middle and meld..the unique rush sound is not possible without alex
@jimmyplanet that is a sentiment that is rarely talked about. just how much ALEX is the link the bridges the gap between geddy and neil. well said !!!
I agree w/ everyone here. Alex gets overlooked because Neil and Geddy's talent show in more overt/in-your-face ways. But Alex's contributions are amazing and enormously important too, plus, he can solo with the best of 'em. Definitely can't (and don't want to) imagine Rush without Lerxst...
This is the only RUSH bassline that I can play. lol ...
RUSH are the end product in the evolutionary line of The Rock Band. Perfectly adapted to their environment of creating and performing their signature style of rock music. RUSH the band and RUSH the music have evolved beyond their rock `n roll/hard rock genesis and into an even higher art form...a kind of Meta-Rock if you will.
I am looking for the version of this song played in their DVD in Rio... sublime!!!! I just love it. If anyone knows where I could get it I will appreciate the information. Love to all.
I was reading Neil's The Ghost Rider and he put in a quote from this song that was perfect in the context. I had forgotten how great this song is because of the overall mediocrity of the rest of Roll The Bones.
One day God called a meeting. He, Jesus and the Holy Spirit. It was a big deal. God said, "we shall create a rock band, and I want each of you to choose a musician to add to my band."
Polish version; Jesli skrzydla spalimy. Lecac do slonca zbyt znacznie. Jesli moment olsnienia, zakonczy sie, zanim sie zacznie. Jesli sen nie zgasnie... Czekam na dalsza czesc fanow angielskiego.
i'm reading one of neil peart's books right now. it's really really good. very smooth prose and extremely touching subject matter. having just taken a road trip myself, and about to take another one, i think i can relate to some of the content. i would hazard calling the man a genius.
lifeson is the hidden power within rush,,, all music is first and foremost what lifeson comes up with,, then gedy playes around with the riffs.. lifeson the puts the drum machine,,, and then they use neils lyrics... and after all that neil playes the drums over the machine,, fact stated by all of them on how they write...
you might want to research the whole 'drum machine... and then Neil plays over the drum machine" thing. i don't think that's an accurate representation of how they write / record.
Alex and Geddy explain the writing process on the documentary on the second disc of rush in rio. They write a basic version with a drum machine and then send the files to Neil for lyrics then he writes his drum parts.
I totally agree...alex gets overlooked compared to Neil and GEDDY BUT ALEX IS THE KEY HIDDEN POWER BEHIND RUSH..WITHOUT HIS EMOTIONAL AND INNOVATIVE GUITAR PLAYING, THEN RUSH WOULD NOT BE NEARLY AS GREAT.....
RUSH is one of those oh-so rare cases of three musicians coming together who are not only masters of their craft individually, but compliment each other perfectly as well.
I often say that Alex is badly under-rated as a rythm player. His knowledge & mastery of using just the right chords to invoke a certain mood is unmatched by anyone.
He's definately up there. If you notice he always improvises that end solo every time and always sounds amazing. Just watch all the different live bravado videos and u will see
@TheOriginalAnalogKid well said. Anyone who's a good guitarist can see that Alex uses chords that most bands don't use. Not to mention, he is an incredible lead player. He doesn't play for show, he plays for the emotional content of a song.
@TheOriginalAnalogKid You hit it right on the head... chord master. He was badly overshadowed by a lot of other great players who had more technical expertise in the soloing department (Rhoads, Van Halen, Vai, etc.), but Alex's chord work really created Rush's sound. His solos were always great too!
@TheOriginalAnalogKid Alex invents chords, tones, textures, emotions and himself...he's likely the most important guitarist ever. no one has done more.
@TheOriginalAnalogKid lyrically, musically , spiritually and loyally...the greatest band to ever grace a stage...and they truly love playing with each other and for their fans...i consider myself privileged to call myself and rush fan and know their music to the depths that i do...
@TheOriginalAnalogKid alex is under recognized because his greatest strength is in his rhythm playing. and people don't usually pay attention to that kind of thing.
This album was quite a work. Actually a service to the listeners more than anything else an album could be. Like when someone does you a favor and you have heart felt appreciation. Thats the way I feel about this album, I appreciate it. A bardic work.
I'm not exactly the biggest Rush fan, (not that I don't like them, because I really do, there are just some other bands I like better) but this song is SO AMAZING!
Jimmy Page is better than Lifeson? In what respect? His playing is unbelievably sloppy, and he cannot even compete against Alex in terms of stylistic diversity. In fact, NONE of the guitarists you mention can compete with Alex in terms of stylistics diversity with the POSSIBLE exception of Beck. You could put Alex in a blues band and he would be fantastic. If you put Stevie Ray Vaughn in Rush he wouldn't have a clue about how to play.
i agree with you,his guitar playing is something special,i might be wrong but original too, when you've heard one guitarist you just about heard them all !!!
