  • noise.....

  • Where did the Buckethead comparison come from? Im a big Buckethead fan, but I dont think hes better than Derek. Derek is something in his own right. They both are amazing. The only reason people would pick Buckethead is because he does some crazy shredding. Derek can shred too, he just chooses to play slide more often and have more structure to his soloing. He might even be more technical than Bucekthead, with his incorporation of modal jazz and Raga, for example.

  • @kralecmit I've had the pleasure of seeing him, his wife, and recently them together. Met him briefly and his humbleness shows thru. Just a nice guy all around (let alone an awesome musician!)

  • Derek Trucks is the best now days. for sure. Warren Hayes is right behind him.

  • comon RL Burnside is the best ever with a slide, A glass slide that is. Big difference glass and metal. Derek took allot from Mr Burnside. the great RL BURNSIDE.

  • did david lynch direct this solo because it just blew my mind!

  • Derek, and Dickey betts in fine form: best possible line-up apart from the original one...too bad it did not work out....

  • Awesome video - perfect angle to study his technique. Thanks!

  • Derek Plays with soul and from his heart thru his fingers. Why try to compare him? He's great! He grew up in an awesome family, enviornment and the company he keeps rocks. He's also one humble, nice guy to boot. Derek, you rock!

  • @ROYGRIP TOTALLY TRUE, RIGHT ON POINT.

  • I will just say this...Greg Allman has never played with a better player than Derek. I am an old school Allman guy too.

  • @royalrider33 I'M 50 YRS OLD AND I COMPLETELY AGREE. THIS KID HAD A DESTINY.

  • duane and derek are equal in skill but i personally like duanes style better.

  • @Glassandcandy at least someone is being honest with their opinion instead of hopping on the bandwagon and worshiping who ever is featured on the video

  • Both good points in response to me below, but I think anyone can say that nobody feels more at one with the guitar when they are playing than Derek. The fact that he so effortlessly and seamlessly combines jazz, blues, rock and roll, soul, Western classical, Indian, Arabic, Gypsy, and so many more styles into his playing just to polish off the slightest notes is something that I never thought was humanly possible.

  • hahahah Trucks is so sick. It's just funny at this point.

  • This guys picking is crazy. Nothing beats the smooth sound of caldwells thumb pickin though. And as far as best musician ever this guy is good but also got to think of te musicians lost in their prime like Vaughan

  • @NIggatedd I couldn't agree with you more, but give the kid his due. He started gigging when he was 10, and in any case, you can put him on the spot and he can tear a stage down to a pulp. The classics will always be hailed, but we need to look more towards the present than what was in the past. Get what I'm trying to say?

  • see AMANDA OVERMYER sing this same cover song WHIPPING POST at all her concerts while on tour promoting her new Album SOLIDIFY (itunes). You can see Overmyer's vesion also posted over YOUTUBE ...

  • derek trucks is my idol

  • fact

  • Even without the slide he's the best guitar player in the world...and then out comes that two inches of glass, and the notes begin singing like they have a voice of their own. Its absolutely mind-boggling that he's not even 30 in this video. The best guitarist to ever live, and the best living musician. Period.

  • @theatlantisrise Absofuckinglutely, wouldnt say he's the best living musician tough, most of his songwritting is a bit to conservative and cliche to me, but in terms of improv. he is far beyond what has ever lived.

  • @eduardoobregon DTB songs are just excuses to put solos in, mostly.

  • @theatlantisrise Best guitarist to ever live? Nope. Best living musician? Nope. But definitely one of them, a legend in his own right. I only disagree because there really is no best. But he certainly plays with more soul, feeling, taste, and spirit than almost any other popular musician of today (popular not being pop but being well-known). One of my favorite guitarists of all time but I wouldn't say he is the best of either category. Is anyone?

  • @PeyotePaul If there is one who can match and possibly best Derek it has to be Jack Pearson. They have played together quite a bit, Jack was an ABB guitarist in the late 90's and is as good as they come, including slide. Better, best? Who's to say? I just enjoy them both. I will say that I truly miss Jeff Healey. He could give any of them a run for their money!

  • racerx3065 You don´t know anything about the guitar, you just got to sit and listen a lot of music, and if you can, play too, to understand this kind of players. Please before you speak, you should know something!!! The same licks??? similar sound???!!!!

  • You middle-schoolers work real hard you might make it to high school and learn enough to be able to objectively comment. Other than bad recording audio, D.T. did a fantastic job here.

  • wow.. great vid. at times it almost sounds like 'nobody knows' off the allman bros 1991 album 'shades of two worlds' f'n badd song.

  • similar sounding to john mayer actually. even his licks!

  • @racerx3065 man i love john mayer, enough so that i take a lot of cues from him and try to incorporate them into my playing. but he and derek do not even compare. derek is on another level all together. let me make a simple analogy to illustrate my point; john is like weed and derek is like acid, both are awesome but one will leave you wondering what the fuck just happened.

  • if derek trucks actually showed any emotion while playing, the guitar would explode and everyone watching would go into shock while their brains seeped out of their ears.

  • @madhattar88 i really don't think the guitar can tell how much emotion derek shows visibly......pretty sure the guitar only responds to artistic and musical emotion.......its too bad most people don't have the attention span for players who aren't as visibly entertaining. for me personally, i prefer to experience music with my ears not my eyes. your eyes deceive you and distract you. though i admit i watch for the very subtle emotions derek shows. though i've listened to/watched a lot of him

  • this dude is like on another planet with his guitar playing...it's INSANE!!!!!!!!!

  • DEREK TRUCKS ROCKS!!!!!

  • He is the best guitarist alive today for sure. What a damn genius.

  • It doesnt get much better then that.

  • Buckthead nah..seriously? One single note Derek plays has more soul than everything Buckethead has ever recorded. I'm talking about music, feelings... not "precision".

  • derek and jimmy best combo every dereks slide with jimmys crazy licks just flow, i want yall to check this band out there not together anymore such a shame, type in "Frog Wing"-wetlands : its jimmy herring , derek trucks, john popper, otiel( cant spell his name) on bass and im not sure of the others but hell of a band!

  • So hört sich der Song an wenn ihn Derek soliert. Das ist schon ein Klasse Gitarrist dieser junge Bursche.

  • How the hell does he play so aggressively with just those damn fingers, fucking amazing

  • All these great slide guitar players on here (cash, cody) wishing they were in his shoes. He drags his thumb, he slides over the minor key, I've played slide as long as he's been alive, and on and on and on. Bottom line, HE is playing lead guitar for the Allman Brothers Band and you are posting on youtube. Derek has been playing professionally since he was 9. Try and tear him down if you must, but he is a guitar legend and you are not. For the record, I can NOT play like Derek Trucks!

  • BEST ROCK GUITAR PLAYER IN HISTORY

  • @figaz555

    Hahahahahaha... You're funny, man.

  • A lotta noise. Strumming the guitar open in standard tuning = noise. You'll note that it's pretty much all he does after he gets the slide on. He's not the worst guitarist ever at all, but he's HIGHLY overrated. Nowhere near on Duane's level as far as being innovative.

  • Based on his performance in this video, I would agree with you that Derek isn't as innovative as Duane. But, listen to "For My Brother" from Derek Trucks Band "Live at Georgia Theatre." His playing on that track and on that album in general is without question some of the best ever recorded. DT hinted that he would prefer to play jazz/indian classical, so if he sounds uninspired (this vid.), it's b/c he has to cater to an audience that wouldn't listen to him if he played the style he wanted.

  • @codyr222 Oh - look - I'm not saying he's a bad guitarist at all, but I do think he's a bit overrated. His tone is ASS compared to Duane's. Between the string dragging and tone, I just can't always get too much into what he's doing....

  • Duane and Derek have these tonal similarities: they both play(ed) solid Gibsons - SGs and Les Pauls, they both used glass coricidin bottles as slides, neither used preamp effects, neither used a pick when playing slide, both used clean amp settings. DT doesn't drag his fingers for every note (he uses only his ind. and mi. fingers at times in this vid). From reading your comments on this video and the Dreams vid, it sounds like you're trying to turn a personal preference into an objective debate

  • @codyr222 @codyr222 Derek is using old Fender amps, while D & D used Marshalls. BIG difference there. He drags his thumb over open strings TOO much. It's really nothing more than paying attention to it. It gets annoying. I've been playing slide for about as long as he's been living. Chances are, he'll get a better hold of it with age. Playing slide in a minor key isn't the best way to go through life, either. Fretting out and making noise at the end of the video is pretty obnoxious.

  • Whether DT drags his thumb too much or not enough is a matter of personal opinion. Whether it's annoying, fascinating, or boring is again a matter of personal opinion - it's subjective. The difference between a major and a minor chord is a single note (relative minor), so there's nothing wrong or strange about playing slide over a minor key. In the end, music is like food: everyone has different tastes. Pick out and eat only the stuff you like, and don't worry about the rest. Everyone wins.

  • @codyr222 But always remember - there's always a time TO do something, and always a time NOT to do something. He'll get that with more experience.

  • @CashWatkins

this would be a better comment if you knew what you were talking about. derek is ALWAYS tuned to open e, and if you strum the open strings while tuned like this, you're playing... an E chord! what key is whipping post in... E, DURING THE JAM...

    have a nice day <3

  • @toozak After reviewing, it looks like you're right. Didn't know he played everything in E. However, you're wrong about WP. It's in A minor.

  • Please, Duane is great, but derek is one of the best ever, derek, jimi, clapton, beck, warren haynes.

  • @jarettray

Clapton sucks dick. Anyone who thinks he is even "good" beyond the four years from the debut of cream has lost my respect.

  • @figaz555 I've lost your respect :)

  • hail dereck

  • Man, I would have loved to go to see him do this. Looked like an awesome show.

  • @Pandolin11 "Dickie was a dick" LOL

  • derek is to duane the same way SRV is to hendrix

  • THIS IS FREAKEN AWESOME!!!! his technique, passion, his melody, he has it all, damn i like how he starts tuning and even that sounds amazing!!!

  • anyone saying derek is overrated, listen to his desdemona solo. it changed my life

  • @pinto4646 Who says that?! I will fight them

  • So is God.

He made the world in 6 days? Pffft.

    Big deal.

  • Sorry boys and girls, this is just noise. What a waste of talent. He ought to go back and listen to Dickie's solos fro the Fillmore West in January 1971. It is sad that this is what was the greatest American band has come to.

  • Wow, you have no fucking idea what music is do, you? This is a prodigy. Dickie was a dick, he had no fucking clue what he was doing. This right here is talent. Listen to this guy play more songs, while you're at it, clean out your ears. You obviously have no clue as to what real music really is.

  • Sorry dude that you can not take the truth! I was there in the beginning and Dickie knows more about melody than Derek will ever show. I am disappointed the the kid has not progrressed. FInd your self some old shows and listen.

  • He's playing within the Allman scheme. If you want to see what Trucks can really do, listen to his band. I'm surprised that the AB old-timers on his thread are so negative since so many of the hardcore fans I know think AB came alive with Warren and Derek.

  • Great slides.

  • Dang, Butch is awesome. Derek is amazing!!!

  • Amazing quality, beautiful solo, amazing all together!

  • Derek is a bloody great player in his own right. The thing is, I just can't get away from comparing him with Duane. Yeah, I know it's nearly 40 years after Duane, but he's just out there on his own, there was something almost otherworldly (is that a real word?) about his playing. Wouldn''t half like to have heard Duane and Peter Green playing together though!

  • @blueswailer1952 Yes, Duane, but Elmore James was Derek"s inspriration!

  • Comment removed

  • Awesome fret work! DT is amazing!

  • The ABB can not be the ABB without Dickey's music and thats a fact..Liz Reed,Revival,Les Bres,Nobody Left to run with,Hogh Falls,Jessica, etc,Etc. Dickey was fired not face to face but by a fax. Its true his drinking had something to do with it,But Claude(butch) wanted to do things to make money and Dickey said no.Like Moogisand Suwannee music Festival among other things..So he had to get rid of him to get the things he wanted done..

  • I couldn't agree more but there is still something magical about Derek and Warren playing w the ABB. I've never gotten to see Dickey play with the group live and I hate it!!!! But his flair and songwriting are/were some of the best things about the band.

  • derek is the man

  • seeen him many times . good as anyone on slide

  • re phrase, BETTER than anyone one on the slide.

  • Ok so I understated it a little,Derek Trucks is Da MAN, He owns Slide Guitar .Ok is that better?

  • no wonder i recongized this, i was there

  • Damn, best guitar player I've seen in a long time.

  • you contradicted yourself quite nicely. music isn't a competition, but you're going to disregard that and compare musicians on a matter that is subjective anyway.

  • Nice to hear him use a Clapton-esque lick at 1:03. He must have picked that up after all those years of standing next to him.

  • well, Derek toured with Eric for 1 year or almost.. and that lick, I'm pretty certain it was played by thousands of people in rock & roll bands in the US even before Eric had his first electric.

  • that's my cousin!!! woo!!

  • go pick a guitar! :)

  • lol the name and that comment are hilarious.

  • @DerekTrucks2ndCousin Way to lie.

  • BEST living guitar player in the world.

  • I'd have to agree. Derek Trucks, Jack White & John Mayer are all amazing.

  • @iagobroxado After JJ Cale

  • @iagobroxado - he's a very good guitarist but he's far from the best.

  • @ultimetal I probably can say the same about YOUR favorite guitarist ;)

  • @iagobroxado - Buckethead is far from my favorite guitarist but he's 50 times the guitar player Derek Trucks is. Derek is a fantatsic blues/slide player who plays with tremendous passion and soul but Buckethead can play six or seven different styles with exquisite precision.

  • @ultimetal

Get the fuck out of here with that buckethead shit.

  • @cavalrytm - Thanks for the tip. I'm out!

  • @ultimetal

    Yeah, of the closet.

  • @Drpepper687

    Hahahahahahahahaha, fucking classic!

  • @ultimetal the secret behind buckethead is this: he's actually derek trucks wearing a mask

  • @nicktight423 - dude...extremely funny...and devoid of animosity...well played, sir.

  • @iagobroxado Listen to Joe Bonamassa as well. Clapton is still alive too remember that ;)

  • @iagobroxado You gutta be kidding?

  • Derek Trucks is the #1 rock guitarist in the world today......this is a fairly widely known fact. Dickey Betts was incredible.....like 20 yrs ago. And he got thrown out of the ABB because he had a serious drinking problem and when told to get help-he got a lawyer instead- so he got the boot. Derek was every bit as good as Eric Clapton last week at the Beacon Theatre - in fact often better on the ABB songs......

  • Derek doesnt get the respect he deserves... honestly... I know lots of old school ABB fans would hate this... but watch the live at the Fillmore duane solo, and then watch this solo... theres no comparison... derek blows him outta the water, and for that matter, basically any guitarist that goes side by side with him... even warren I think

  • music is all opinion bro..and you have yours and I have mine. but 2 minutes onwards just sounds like random noise until almost three minutes and then it gets a little better. without Duane there would be no Derek. You also have to remember Derek has been playing guitar for a lot longer than Duane. Oh and Duane didn't have Duane to look up to;)

  • That's some weird guitar work

  • Dickey betts said to Derek ' I left the Brothers in good hands" THe allman brothers are not the allman bros form the 70's,80's,90's. Thay are a no band and new ideas and new sound. They are fantastic go see any other shows thier mid blowing!Remember Derek is not trying to be duane he is being himself as a guitar player remrber this is a new area the past is imporant but this is the future and i like it.

  • Richard Betts is the Allman Bros!! At least in the 90s he was.

    Love you Dickie :D

  • This is just noise and the reason that after more than 25 years of following the brothers around to see great shows, I stopped. Duane is probably rolling over. Dicky's solo made the early versions of this song the best. Listen to Fillmore West from January 1971. Now that was outrageous!

    Dennis

  • Richard Betts was replaced for a reason...

  • he is not duane, but its a great guitar player... i have listen to fillmore west, the whipping post in that cd is out-fucking-standing... but the all man brothers today is pretty good too... and specially derek

  • you were probably high for more than those 25 years too... now that the band is clean (and maybe you too) it probably sounds like noise to you.

  • excuse me, but I don't see any videos of you playing.

  • I thought the out/noise section in the middle was great. Let those who have ears, hear...

  • Hot damn Derek is on fire, it just seems like he really feels more comfortable on stage the last couple years and can really dig into stuff like this.

  • I was there!! haha even funnier? I have this same part of the solo on my phone!!

  • God, he plays like an old pro.

  • the past 3 years in a row they played this song as the encore...was somewhat dissapointed w/ their set this year but ratdog killed at this show and allman was still tight

  • nobody smokes like derek, and i'm sure warren followed with some kickass of his own.

  • holy shit this kicks ass

  • Nothing like going to "Church" on a Sunday Morning.. Thanks!

  • DEREK is always on FIRE!!!!

  • Derek is a BEAST on that red guitar!!!! Thanks for posting!!!!

  • mmmm nice!

  • Genius.
