  • Why on earth are people yapping on about Lea Salonga, she sung this role in the 10th anniversary, 15 years ago, clues there, she's too old for the part, move on. Secondly, I watch it and she has no where near the depth of emotion Samantha has. doesn't even come close.

  • @zaftra you're right about lea being too old for the role. but you shouldn't undermine her skills. she wouldn't be at the peak of her career if she wasn't good enough.

  • @bloodraine95 Where did i undermine her skills? When I looked at the 10th anniversary on here of Lea, fine voice, but she is just perfunctory. Samantha acted it and emoted it much more. I've no doubt that when Lea was on stage during a 'proper' performance it may have be a different story altogether. These are basically concerts not the 'real thing'.

  • thumbs up if you're an Eponine, in love with that one guy who will never love you back :(

  • @scgtlp Benedict Cumberbatch.

  • Too un-relatable, bland and plain (in terms of singing) for the role.

  • She's so perfect for this role! :D

  • She is AMAZING. But no one can beat Lea Salonga (:

  • There is no beating that performance. BEST EVER!!!!!!!

  • Friendzone.

  • thats a lot to sing about nick jonas.

  • @whiterose89 lol

  • @paolav06 no she's not! It's the eponine that was in the 25th anniversary movie... (even though I would rather it be lea)

  • How old was Lea when she sang it at the 10th Anniversary? Just asking.

  • @rjvsmb 24 if I'm not mistaken. :)

  • Lea Salonga is much better but it's unfair to compare a 21 year old girl with her.

  • 4 minutes and 18 seconds of chills

  • no bad, but I like more Lea Salonga in10th Anniversary

  • @vickyc99 mine did, I just thought it was because my headphones are cheap

  • who else's speakers started going weird at 3:17?

  • @vickyc99 yes XD

  • I'm so happy she's playing Eponine in the movie adaptation

  • @paolav06 STFU!! she is!? :D omg you just made my life!!!

  • I just found out she is playing Eponnie in the movie Les Miserables coming out this year.......WINNING!!!!!!!!

  • two words: LOVE HER!

  • Hello!

I'm really sorry for bothering you but I really hope you can check out my cover of this wonderful song. It would really mean a lot to me since I used this song for a contest which I didn't win. I was just hoping for another chance here in Youtube. Thank you very much.

    -Angelique( A Filipina 14-year-old)

  • I always think of him when I listen to this... :'(

  • I cried multiple times when I saw the show Sunday, and this is one of the parts where I did.

  • I dislike her voice but glad she got that part in the film :)

  • That was so good, it screwed up my laptop's speakers. Stupid good singers.

  • @TheBriTeam It's not your speakers it's the video's noise :(

  • @TheBriTeam mine too

  • @TheBriTeam the same thing happened to mine

  • @TheBriTeam haha that final big note fucked up my speakers big time!

  • @TheBriTeam Mine too -_-

  • Comment removed

  • Please get rid of the noise!! Please! Thanks for the quality video!

  • 2:07!!! she's got tears in her eyes....!!! :D

  • Can't wait to see her play this role in the movie. She does a awesome job as this character.

  • One more thing SURE Samantha's facial expression helps you to be touched by the song, she is a good actriss and singer as i said i only thinh tha Lea would be better the song really fits on her voice....and I was really curious to see her as Eponine...But THANK GOD they didin't give it do Taylor she would be the iceberg and the movie the Titanic....

  • No one can questionates how good she is but i do think she was a safe choice for the role. Personatly i prefer Lea. We can't say that Sam did a better perform because we never saw Lea as Éponine singing it, we only see her singin as herself. And in my humble opinion she passes more emotion, enunciates better and the notes are high but at the same time soft, she really touches you with this song i imagine how would she sing it feeling what Éponine was feeling.Lea would have been a better choice.

  • @moreiramarii Actually there's a vid of her doing on my own. Not from Glee...

  • The only thing I don't like about her is how she over-enunciates. Some formally trained singers do it and sounds and feels so unnatural it takes you out of the moment.

  • She is beautiful. This nearly made me cry.

  • Samantha is an amazing singer, and so freakin' pretty!

  • I don't like her version... I'm definitely NOT a fan of Lea (I can't stand her actually) but she sings this song SO much better. I also happened to be a HUGE Les Mis fan and a HUGE Taylor swift fan and I was willing to accept a not so good Eponine to see her in the movie (yes, I know everybody thinks she would have been awful, but I disagree). Still I think Samantha is going to do a good job but I'm disappointed by the news cause I don't find her particularly interesting to see or to listen to.

  • THANK GOD she got the part instead of taylor. i really love taylor but there is no way she could sing this song as well as samantha. this is gorgeous.

  • seriously my Mac speakers CANNOT take her spectacular voice, especially at the "I have KNOOOOOOWN". The speakers just go bonkers there and it starts sounding like a radio with a bad reception.

    Still bloody amazing.

  • she's replacing taylor swift? THANK GOD OH MY GOODNESS, THANK GOD.

  • I threw up in my mouth a little when I found out Taylor Swift was being considered for the movie role... Thank God they chose Samantha!

  • at 3:16 my headphones literally exploded from amazingness

  • Thank GOD Samantha Barks is now Eponine in the movie! And I'm even more excited that Taylor Swift's dumbass is THE FUCK OUTTA THERE!!!

  • FOR THE WIN!

  • Oh. My. Gosh. I am so incredibly excited that Samantha will be Eponine in the film!!!! She is gonna be fantastic!!!! :DDD

  • Best Eponine EVER! Sooo happy she's playing the part in the movie!!!

  • Thank you baby Jesus and the theater Gods for giving her the role of Eponine in the movie. Thank you. I would have love watching Lea Michele but Samantha is Amazing, she deserve this part. I'm so happy.

  • Oh my, I'm CRYING!

  • YAY!!! EFF TAYLOR SWIFT AND THE WHITE UNTHEATRICAL HORSE SHE TRIED TO RIDE IN ON!! ;P

  • Comment removed

  • Wow what a novel thought getting someone who can actually sing and act to play the part. I am beyond relieved about this.

  • THANK THE CASTING GODS. <3

  • I'm sooooo happy the amazing Samantha Barks has been given the role of Eponine in the Les Mis movie! She is so talented and this performance just proves it even more! She truly is Eponine and casting anyone else would not do this role justice.

  • Poor Taylor Swift! I know her and that fucking guitar are both in pain!

  • @DeontezL Stupid Guitar? Haha she has sold 30 millions of albums Stupid.

  • So happy she's playing Eponine in the movie!!! I'm a fan of Taylor Swift, but definitely cannot see her playing the role.

  • Oh thank GOD! Taylor Swift will not be Eponine in the movie, the fantastic Samantha Barks will be! :)

  • Hubiera preferido que Eponine fuera Lea Michele, pero antes que Talylor Swift, me quedo con esta.

  • I love she is now in the movie version! She has a much better fitting voice than Taylor Swift! :)

  • OFFICIALLY EPONINE. Oh thank GOD. Lea Salonga will always be favorite, but Samantha is fantastic! So excited for the movie!

  • She is Eponine. :) Better her than Taylor Swift!

  • i play this song on piano and love it like and i will post a video!

  • I am a huge Lea fan... but Samantha really embodies this piece. She lives it... or at least... she makes me feel like she does. Well done. Would love to hear this without the audio issue at 3:14. thanks for sharing. :)

  • Must say i prefer leas version, but probably cos I heard hers first!

  • this gives me chills every time.

  • Samantha sounds very good, one poster mentioned her ability to show the vonerable side eponine...

I couldn't find her singing I dreamed a dream, only Lea.... why? has anyone seen one of sparks?

  • I personally think this performance is phenomenal! I think that all the Eponines have their different way of performing and they are all amazing!

  • OMG! She is definitely my favorite Eponine!

  • I met her once ahaaa

  • Sam has a very NASAL voice. And she needs to learn how to act. I would rank her at the bottom of Eponine-wannabes along with the overrated Sutton Foster.

  • Samantha attacks this as a POP song and her expressions are so conjured and predictable (amateurish). And although her voice is strong, she doesn't know how to control it; worse, she doesn't enunciate well. THIS is HARDLY a performance that would rival either Frances Ruffelle's or Lea Salonga's.

  • @mermanluponegoodreno True. Samantha doesn't have Frances' ability to connect emotionally with the audience nor Lea Salonga's extraordinary power to blend beautiful voice with brilliant acting. She's not totally bad, though, just young and especially inexperienced in theater.

  • I compared both the 10th and 25th anniversary performances of this song, and to be honest it's probably blasphemy to say this but I prefer Samantha Barks to Lea Salonga, both vocally AND on her acting, of course seeing these concerts is different to the play itself, but I can't help but prefer her, I felt that while Lea Salonga is a fantastic singer, she just seemed to lack the emotion.

A lot of people will probably disagree with me, but that's just my personal opinion.

  • @TheJacksForAllTrades couldn't agree more with you :)

  • @agh267 :D

  • @TheJacksForAllTrades i'm totally agree with you, Samantha Barks is all full of love! You can see her suffer! Her desperation about him! I don't, I rather like her too

  • This has got to be one of my favorite performances of this song...right up there with lea salonga. I'm not a huge fan of lea Michelle, she has an amazing voice, but I feel she's a bit over rated. I love this version, because although her voice is not as perfect techniqually, it shows the raw emotion that the part needs.

  • i'm singing this at an audition for an arts school in 2 weeks *and breathe* :P

  • HOLY SHIT THIS IS GOOD STUFF!!! <3

  • @xLilLillix Right?! I'm a band kid and learn to really appreciate this stuff....some people don't know great music when it slaps them in the face. >:U

  • talk about an amazing voice....

  • I have to agree with the minority here.

At first sight-Lea's performance is amazing. But, after you watch about five times, you'll notice that her expressions and voice never change. Samantha's voice tone and her expressions change a lot during her performance. I think as a performer she did an amazing job.

But yes-vocally speaking Lea pwns Samantha any day.

  • @grungifiedtwo I think Lea is actually overrated as a singer. Her technique is spot on but her voice itself isn't that exceptional- it's not immensely powerful nor does she have a large range.

  • why are they fighting over Nick Jonas

  • @XxYunaMokoxX Because Nick is an amazing talented young man, and very handsome! :)

  • Okay I think a lot of people will hate me for this but I need to say it. Although lea is amazing, I actually enjoyed sam's performance more. Lea is definitely the superior singer, there is no doubt about that. Sam's tone gets very bright at times while lea's is very warm an clear. But Sam in my opinion performes the character of eponine much better. She exposes a young, alone, and venerable side of the usually tough and street smart eponine that lea fails to produce. It makes me cry every time

  • @KreeperzInTheCloset i totally agree:]

  • @KreeperzInTheCloset I agree there! Totally. I LOVE Lea, she's an amazing singer and I love to hear her sing, but Sam makes a better Eponine.

  • @KreeperzInTheCloset I definitely agree! I think part of it is the trend in Theater singing which is moving away from pure vocal talent to those who can put a lot of emotion into their voice. Sam isn't as nimble or technically capable as Lea, but her emotion is breaking through the whole performance. It's incredible.

  • in les mis world, marius is silly :P in the real world, as far as i know, he's smart- i think Nick and Sam went out for a short time...:)

  • Wow, this was wonderfully sung.

  • This girl is just beautiful. And she can sing.

  • want. to. be. her. she has the voice, she's pretty, she can act, AND she's been eponine!

  • She is absolutely the best eponine I have ever heard!

  • She is singing through her nose. It hurts to listen to.

  • @giddyonupyall Didnt think I'd agree because she was amazing, but listening to her "blind" at 2:18, it sounds VERY nasally.

  • she is a great eponine. definitely hard to decide whether i like her or lea salonga better. but they are both amazing, and this song is just brilliant. definitely my favourite song from this whole musical :D

  • She's amazin, but she feels too "pretty" to be eponine.

  • I don't know what people are arguing about; this girl is fantastic. I know next to nothing about the context of this song but I can understand all I need to from her performance. Brilliant.

  • I just love this song. She did such a great job.

  • I love Sam

  • I prefer Lea Michele's version.

  • this is excellent she sounds really beautiful

  • is she in a hurry?i don't mean to compare, but can't help it man but Lea Salonga is the best Eponine..singing and acting wise

  • when she says "pretending" i lose it.

  • So many people compare her to Lea Salonga, be there's no need. Each are brilliant and unique, and it's so difficult for others to follow Lea's reputation - to be honest, she's done incredibly considering!

  • I like lea SALONGA version.

  • Congratulations. You made me cry

  • I wonder how many people that put "I love Lea's version better" trying to be cool thinks that everyone is talking about Lea Michele from Glee....

  • both versions are beautiful, and both give me chills! Lea's hard to live up to, but i think Sam came damn close ~ I especially love how she stayed in character so well :)

  • Comment removed

  • BEAUTIFUL!!

  • i LOVE LOVE THIS!

  • sorry lea........but this eponine is my favorite!:D

  • like Ms. Lea's version of on my own....

  • I like her alot more than lea! She is awesome!

  • After listening to hundreds of pop and rock tracks my computer was fine.

Then this girl came on and broke my speakers!

    Could I sue her?

    Fantastic

  • Why isn't this album on Itunes yet?!

  • This song is the BOMB!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • What a beautiful song. Very intense. Always makes me sad :) <3

  • I love the song very much and I give the writer of the song an A+

  • I love this! She gives way to a lot of expression and emotion making me really believe, she "loves him." I think we should enjoy their performances and not tear things apart, nit-picking. I didn't notice or LOOK FOR her flaws, I looked for her credibility, and I found it--this song is all about the words which tell a tragic story. Does her rendition cause you to think of the words and her plight? YES! I didn't notice her not keeping with the orchestra--they ended up together at the end :D

  • those dimples.... 0:40 seconds /drool... she's so cute! her voice is pretty good as well :D

  • @ohmthegnome also, the fact that she's tearing up at the end helps too!

  • I love her voice!!

  • That's the problem if you compare lea and sam, first if you're just going to use videos from youtube - technology has jump-up from 1995 (windows 95) vs. 2010 (windows7) the videos and sound of 2010 are better than 1995. Second, sam have seen the performance of lea from 1995 so she need to make a better difference and its up for you to judge if she have done it. But who has a better voice quality and stage performance for Eponine?

  • Why does the sound crack at 3:10?

  • I love this song... :)

  • I love Sam ♥♥♥

  • She and Lea both have cute dimples : )

  • chilling

  • Lea salonga is super natural... Confidence is very important! hehe. Her voice is actually is not a broadway quality. Well she is totally pop. She has a good voice but the song doesn't really fit her voice.

  • @ilovecebuful Yup, Sam's voice and attack are too pop. She's not that flexible yet to do musical theater.

  • Though Lea will always be my favorite Eponine, this is absolutely AMAZING. I don't get how you guys can say she's ugly and can't sing... She's MY new idol! :) this is wonderful-3

  • she is gorgeous

  • I'm obsessed with her hat.....I want it. :)

  • AMAZING! :D

  • marius is a dumbass.

  • I must admit I like Lea's version better because it was much powerful...but her version is good too, it's calming and relaxing :)

  • No one can do it like Lea but she did a good job and is very emotive when she sings, well done Sam!!

  • @suttonfosteristhebes oh.... so you're just going round all the videos of this performance and posting this same comment. That's.... em.... I'm sorry but that is really sad.

(Also, its a pity you couldnt fit that 't' on the end of your username) :P

  • @suttonfosteristhebes

can you sing like she just did, can you act and excuse but if shes know pretty then you must me bling.. btw you can't say what people can and canot do... ok bye.

  • @suttonfosteristhebes sutton foster's performance is easily trumped by this performance - watch?v=VjfmP7h3gBw&feature=related

  • @suttonfosteristhebes It's pretty cute that you haven't been on Broadway and yet you're insulting someone who has :)

  • Comment removed

  • She does amazing acting with her face in this -- LOVE IT <3

  • I prefer lea's version..nonetheless, I like how Sam gives a different perspective to Eponine...Sam's version lets you feel that even though Eponine is a tough, she still has a soft side. What i would just like to point out is that Sam should try to sing with the orchestra; for example, @ 1:26-1:30, when she sang without sustaining " me", you could hear the harp catching up which kinda lost the fluidity of the song.(idk, maybe it's the orchestra's fault as well?) but then again, good job :)

  • Comment removed

  • @gabrielefontanilla i agree with you. and the harp is slow

  • Ok... I've calmed down now :P Seriously though, Sam's incredible. Everyone is entitled to an opinion but i don't believe in hateful messages, especially aimed at one so young. I am a musician and knowledgeable of musical theatre. I don't see how anyone who is could dislike this but... hey. I think the people who cast her know better than any of us so she must be a professional standard.

For me, she brings a new level and life to this timeless material.

You may have noticed ... I love her! lol

  • This is a mediocre POP rendition of this song. I am so disappointed that the production went from theater greats such as Ruffelle and Salonga to THIS (along with the other pop singer, Nick Jonas) hoping that the younger generation would be able to relate. Samantha's singing is strong (esp. compared to her pop contemporary and boyfriend Nick Jonas) , but that's exactly the problem: that's ALL there is to her! Fake emotion, no nuances in either acting or singing. Amateurish.
