I see people mentioning that the band is faking it to a recording, which they obviously are, but Janis' vocals sound very different then they did on the record. Bands on tv in those days almost always lip-synced, and I've never heard of performing to a tape while the singer is live, but that seems to be the case here.
i'm not convinced this is live, they're using a fuzz pedal and yet there is no fuzz pedal to be seen, can the sound man, if there is one, be that good?
@userboy6 Youre right hon- theyre not actually playing- which was the norm for a lot of these cheesy ass shows. But its still so interesting to see. ...notice too...the guitars arent even plugged into anything. Why couldnt they just have the guys at least plug em in ,,,to,,,somethin? haha Cheap ass tv baby thats all i know hehehe But aint Janis just fanatasic as always?
Big Brother And the holding Company STILL ROCKS! They still tour... still sound AMAZING! Check out their other youtube videos. The best 60's band, Ever.
" name one good song she has. she didn't even write bobby mcgee and piece of my heart is god awful. just because she was big in the 60's doesnt mean she was good. clapton and hendrix are incredibly over rated too. there greatest hits aren't even good albums. they maybe have 3 or 4 good songs their whole career. who cares. and janis joplin sucks even more than any of those over rated clowns. thats why Amy winehouse is best" WILL SOMEBODY TEACH THIS ASS HOLE A LESSON!

LOL - At the end, when Don Adams asks Janis to elaborate on the article she was quoted in, she should've said no, and told him, "Sorry about that, Chief!"

@fdalkjfdsalkj I agree! The band is "playing" the record version note-for-note, including the solos! It must be a backing track for them to mime over while Janis is singing live.
Here is a fun fact: The Drummer, Dave Getz, he was my music teacher in High School. It was pretty awesome, and a couple times he'd guest drum and we'd jam to Piece of my Heart.

@bjdplumbing Hi, I've never heard about her until the day I made a search on youtube. She's wonderful indeed, but Janis means a lot to me - I found out about Janis when I was 16, in 1998, sitting on the sofa of my auntie's living room in the evening. I rememeber that i was feeling a little down and i just looked at the cover of Greatest Hits...the first song I heard was Summertime.
After that, It was impossible to resist to her music, to her singing andto her own self. :) Sorry about my English
I AM AN OLE HIPPY GREW UP PARTYING WITH THESE PERFORMERS HENDRIX JANIS, I LOVE THIS WOMANS FREEDOM AND THE WAY SHE EXPRESS'S IT, THERE HAS NOT BEEN ANOTHER SINCE JANIS, IM STILL IN LOVE WITH HER OLE HIPPY ROOSTER
To the person who wrote me about soul, yes, you are right, soul is everything (that is why I have hundreds of soul cd's). I learned from your comment to look beyond the presentation, thanks. (But I do think God cares of purity & holiness, too). Yet, we are never to judge, so, good comment, thanks. (and I looked for one of her videos because I remember as a kid, one of her guitarists, WOW what a sound / soul / love / talent).
To all the haters regardless of self endowed musical expertise you may claim, look to see her performance on the Woodstock footage and notice the look on Mama Cass's face, which says it all.
@Sevy1973 Cont ... To claim that this woman had not talent is both ignorant and misinformed. Janis garnered the respect and awe of her peers who in my opinion have much more musical clout then the people responding here including myself! Take it from them not my this lady rocked and she sang with deep emotion and reckless abandon.
nasally, raspy, witch voice, and you say she is unbeatable? maybe for last place, yes. her scream voice is not talent, it is hyper-noise. maybe you are still on acid. and loose the hate, I am a 60's master rock musician, I know what I am talking about. @deeallen2 well lol you said "U do not know music at all if u think you even know anybody that has a better vocal than her". Yes, Janis was a very great vocalist, one of the (if not) best female vocalists I've ever heard. She has a very unique and breathtaking voice, just like Robert Plant. The two best voices of the 60's and 70's.
It's the heart breaking guitar that gets you...not Janis...sorry but it's true...just those few notes on the guitar are what get you, even more so today considering that Janis' vocals now immediately make one think of Marge Simpson.
@tupperwararty Until Janis sings "I need a man to love"...then your heart begins to break for real...because Janis would still be alive were it not for the fact that that was missing in her life...she drugged herself because she lacked a man's love. Well, I look at her face & I think "If I had been there, I would have loved you". Too late, too late. The message is...love one another & don't be afraid to show it.
@tupperwararty Janis was a very insecure person who needed real true reassurance- where as others can brush off little things easier. She was so easily hurt. Too much. Its a deeper pain than most people ever know. People killed Janis. People can really wear you down. Just like so many others we've loved- she died from the effects of this. Thanks for understanding. Not many do.
I was in high school then. The first "big" concert I ever went to was to see Janis at Cobo Hall, even though it was 300 miles from the little resort town in northern Michigan where I lived. My girlfriend had a Mustang with a 425 cu in V8 and we stormed down to Detroit to see Janis. But she was with Kosmic Blues Band by then. She never should have left Big Brother. They had a unique sound that will always be Janis's trademark sound.
She fkn nailed this song here. Its so perfect. (Summertime) I read that ....whatshisface.....the Get Smart bastard....really hurt Janis with his comments and she was in tears backstage. Hollywood is no place for tender souls.
@holyise That guy in the vid....I forget his name now...he was the star of the tv series Get Smart. Remember that? Crap show. ....anyway.....I read in a very good Janis bio that his shitty comments to her on stage hurt her badly. I dunno if that is seen in this vid but it was posted a while ago on YT. He went on about hippies and made rotten comments about them and she took it very deeply and backstage she cried her eyes out. Its true. This fkr hurt her feelins. She was very sensitive.
@holyise Yea Janis was one of the best. She had her toughness but she was actually a very sensitive self-conscious person. Her feelings were hurt easily. I guess her tough bravado didnt always protect her. The et Smart guy was a real bas'tid. Scuse my language.
@holyise Yea Janis was one of the best. She had her toughness but she was actually a very sensitive self-conscious person. Her feelings were hurt easily. I guess her tough bravado didnt always protect her. The Get Smart guy was a real bas'tid. Scuse my language.
The definitive, "Summertime"..from the heart and NO lip syncing. So bittersweet to see this on the 40th anniversary of her death. I still see the image of Cass Elliott with her mouth hanging open when she first heard Janis...the woman was sheer magic. Thankfully, we have these videos and recordings..the voice will live forever.
Great performance. Ranks right up there with the CHEAP THRILLS album but with the added bonus of Don Adams of GET SMART [Agent 86] fame and his banter. Thanks for posting!

@deeallen2
with the exception of Robert Plant.

I'm curious to know who the crazy 26 people who disliked this video are.

It's the heart breaking guitar that gets you...not Janis...sorry but it's true...just those few notes on the guitar are what get you, even more so today considering that Janis' vocals now immediately make one think of Marge Simpson.
tupperwararty 1 year ago
@tupperwararty Until Janis sings "I need a man to love"...then your heart begins to break for real...because Janis would still be alive were it not for the fact that that was missing in her life...she drugged herself because she lacked a man's love. Well, I look at her face & I think "If I had been there, I would have loved you". Too late, too late. The message is...love one another & don't be afraid to show it.
tupperwararty 1 year ago
@tupperwararty And that stupid pathetic cunt of a tv host had no idea. Janis needed men around her that understood...alas they were not there.
tupperwararty 1 year ago

Janis & the 'Big Brother' guys made fantastic music together... LOVED this video UNTIL the idiot from Get Smart starts his insults !

She fkn nailed this song here. Its so perfect. (Summertime) I read that ....whatshisface.....the Get Smart bastard....really hurt Janis with his comments and she was in tears backstage. Hollywood is no place for tender souls.

@NoRosesForMe If you dont mind me asking, What are you talking about?
holyise 1 year ago
@holyise That guy in the vid....I forget his name now...he was the star of the tv series Get Smart. Remember that? Crap show. ....anyway.....I read in a very good Janis bio that his shitty comments to her on stage hurt her badly. I dunno if that is seen in this vid but it was posted a while ago on YT. He went on about hippies and made rotten comments about them and she took it very deeply and backstage she cried her eyes out. Its true. This fkr hurt her feelins. She was very sensitive.
NoRosesForMe 1 year ago
@NoRosesForMe Wow I never knew that. She was such a great singer it's a shame anyone would do something like that.
holyise 1 year ago
@holyise Yea Janis was one of the best. She had her toughness but she was actually a very sensitive self-conscious person. Her feelings were hurt easily. I guess her tough bravado didnt always protect her. The et Smart guy was a real bas'tid. Scuse my language.

Why can't alternative music like this ever hit main stream, like it did back in the late 60's and early 70's?
We are missing it, I know alot of it has to do with making money, but come on "man with the cigar" throw us a crumb once in a while.
