I'm not exactly sure what it means and all I know that it isn't suprising why Oldfield and Holland mislead themselves through this investigation as time would tell that both had already done so with Kizko etc. On the Wearside letters and tapes, a lot of time was wasted because they ignored warnings from Ellis and Windsor-Lewis that these were probrably a hoax.
the police were certain that the letters were from the Ripper and Ellis and Windsor Lewis were wavering about the authenticity because they couldnt admit that they as experts might have been wrong and that the voice may have been faked. The police knew better but when the copycat killer Peter Sutcliffe confessed to being the Ripper they had no choice only say the letters were a hoax. They knew that they were real and from the real Ripper.

I dont think they misled themselves in the Ripper case. They were certain that the ripper was writing to them. They were also certain that there was a copycat killer involved for a few murders and all the assaults.

Dept Supt Dick Holland (2 i/c to Oldfield) ignored a detailed report from a pair of DCs who int/view Sutcliffe in 78 and were so suspicious they wanted him properly checked out. Holland chucked it aside.

Read Michael Bilton's book "Wicked Beyond Belief" on the police accounts. Oldfield had Terence Hawkshaw as a prime suspect. A younger cop Andrew Laptew had Peter Sutcliffe as a prime suspect yet all this was ignored and the warnings that the Geordie tape were sent by a hoaxer due to different blood groups. Despite much wasted effort, Sutcliffe was caught by accident by ordinary two South Yorks policemen whom increased their suspicions with his character and false details.
Also Sutcliffe's main worry was that the police would tell his wife that he had been picked up with a prostitute and his Rover P6 had false numberplates registered from a Skoda S100 in attempt to conceal the identity of his car been seen in a red light. In fact the West Yorkshire Police made so many mistakes to ignore simple vital clues that Sutcliffe managed to elude capture, they were worst than Inspector Clouseau.
That's where I got the info from. The OIC who ignored Laptew's report was Dick Holland. To give some idea of his preferred method of 'catching' murderers, check out what he did to poor Stefan Kisko in 75.
Furthermore I also saw a film on the hunt for the ripper with Alun Armstrong as George Oldfield whom put himself into enormous stress being overweight, overworked and a heavy smoker. Despite recent press interviews prior to his death, Holland's record was not a good one that forced him out of the job to humble security duties instead.
Oldfield was knocking back the scotch too! I also think the West Yorks police made major mistakes in ignoring survivors' evidence eg. the Marilyn Moore photofit and, when giving credence to the tape, ignoring Olive Smelt's insistence that the man who attacked her (and they knew it was a Ripper case) had a Yorkshire accent.

I'm not exactly sure what it means and all I know that it isn't suprising why Oldfield and Holland mislead themselves through this investigation as time would tell that both had already done so with Kizko etc. On the Wearside letters and tapes, a lot of time was wasted because they ignored warnings from Ellis and Windsor-Lewis that these were probrably a hoax.

The police knew better but when the copycat killer Peter Sutcliffe confessed to being the Ripper they had no choice only say the letters were a hoax. Sutcliffe was so well known to the cops that they were absolutely certain he was not the Ripper. His blood was different and his teeth pattern didnt match the Ripper's bite marks. He was just a copycat killer who had been disturbed by the real Ripper and he did all the assaults and two murders in the Ripper frame were his. The real Ripper was winding up the cops with letters including the copycat murders in his count. Sutcliffe was offered a deal by a gang of corrupt cops who all resigned.

I dont think they misled themselves in the Ripper case. They were certain that the ripper was writing to them. They were also certain that there was a copycat killer involved for a few murders and all the assaults.
They did a deal with that copycat killer who was Sutcliffe and thats why they never wrote a book about him and resigned soon after. They knew that they let the Ripper get away but they had a record of stitch ups anyway so you shouldnt be surprised at that.

The classic case was the two Ford Corsairs he drove as they were mistaken for a Mk 2 Ford Cortina due to some similarities with the external detail and some features of the instruments and controls and because I remember a relative use to own a Corsair. I also saw a gripping TV dramatised reconstruction of the Kisko case.

Read Michael Bilton's book "Wicked Beyond Belief" on the police accounts. Oldfield had Terence Hawkshaw as a prime suspect. A younger cop Andrew Laptew had Peter Sutcliffe as a prime suspect yet all this was ignored and the warnings that the Geordie tape were sent by a hoaxer due to different blood groups. Despite much wasted effort, Sutcliffe was caught by accident by ordinary two South Yorks policemen whom increased their suspicions with his character and false details.
