I don't know. I play that first chord as a D-form G chord on the 7th fret, with the D string open (x-x-0-7-8-7) If you play it that way, the G played on the 2nd string, 8th fret would be a "sus" in a D chord. I think of it as a G/D chord. The next three chords become: D maj.7, C maj.7/D (or C maj.9), D.

The Gmaj 7 chord is really a D 6 because you're not playing G on the 5th fret - 4th string.

I don't know how the opening chord is shaped in the original Buffulo Springfield songbook but when Neil plays this song live at Massey Hall in 1971 I don't think he's playing the Gmaj7 as you call it.

- rather he's playing a more robust sounding chord - the B m6 (Gmaj 7 / B) with the first finger barred on the 7th fret, 3rd finger-4th string-9th fret, 4th finger-5th string-11th fret.
