Hi, if your autofocus mechanism of camera still works, you don't need to put a pack of film in it the camera will still do the autofocus, but if it brokes, it will happens just like my sx70 in my video "polaroid test 03", it focus at the same range all the time. BTW, what will happen when you shoot in a empty pack or the counter counts "0", the explosure will be wrong(only one shultter speed). Hopes it help.

Actually, yes you do need to put a pack of film in, as the camera is powered by a battery contained in the film.

No, they're discontinuing their pack film, not their integral film. Fuji still makes pack film so it will still be available.
