I used to own an 03 reg m3 smg, I loved it, never had any probs with the gearbox ever, I thought it was more fun with the paddle shifters, the manuals are very good also, I bought mine from Henry bros BMW in Glasgow, it was an ex demo and had 6,000miles on the clock, had all the bells and whistles and was remapped and delimited by the dealer. Defo up there with the best cars I've owned

@wasted151 Well with SMG you get the fastest gear change possible. You also get a manual mode and a auto mode with it. Cons? Well none really. SMG is the best of both worlds.
@wasted151 You will have to see service records of the M3 you want to buy. A manual might be tougher but if the car you are buying is well taken care of, then the SMG will be fine.

Its about banging the next gear properly @ the right rpm to jerk the car forward, giving extra momentum to pull through that gear. also, manual is and will always be the simplier more efficient means of delivering power. Manual has Less parasitic (inertial) weight loss from the drivetrain which means more of the power gets to the ground.

@gunzzer16 SMG is nice to drive but needs getting used too. Parts can break and are very expensive. Manual....well very low maintenance and more control of the car. Also depends on where/how you drive it. Country roads or city? Very miniscule performance difference as seen in the video. I prefer a manual although one day I'll get a car with paddle shifters to try it out. Try and test drive both before buying.

Manuals are alot funnier to driver i must say but... with a transmission that cost 15 000 id rather let the paddle do my double clutch downshifting for me. Although the smg gearbox is about the same. Either way im gettin a csl e46 m3.

The E46 looks much more robust than the E36 IMHO. I would put in the Signature Motoring performance intake kit for only around $150 and gain up to 13HP on the stock output for the 330i and a bit less for the 325 and 328. I highly recommend this item, see my youtube channel for the action video on it.

smg is marketing. Not all people want to drive manuals, so BMW is expanding the market to those who want an m3, but not a manual transmission. Without smg, the other m3's would cost like 5-10k more.

What do you mean by more comfortable? Both drive identicle, with a 6spd you just have to shift 3-4 times and you're cruising exactly the same. Also you don't get a sports car like an M3 for comfort if you wanted that why not get a 5 or 7 series.

SMG is great for comfort driving, but the performance that it yields on the track (in terms of shift times) is what makes it such a reasonable and logical choice.

obviously you didnt look close enough, on 1:27 you can see the gears in the dash which means its the smg, also has paddle shifters and it has a small pause between shifts, i think the smg performs better, it can take more power, bmw made the smg so it could shift faster than a manual.

csl is a kind of more light/less kilos bmw m3 e46 a new version of famous car and smg is multitronic shift gear like automat but also like sports shifter
the csl means coupe /sport/lightweight,these were never available in america because of emissions rules, it has no air and stripped to be lighter,smg sequential manual gearbox,has pedal shifters behind the wheel,and ofcourse m6 has the 5 lter507hp v-10 and these are e-39 i-6 3.2 liter with 333 hp..
My opinion is the following: The manual could be faster, if you are a professional or almost professional driver. An average guy, who cannot use the heel and toe and double clutch shifting racing technics as fast as hell, will not to be able to do a better time on a racetrack with the manual. So if you are an everyday driver it could be a better coice an SMG- because you can produce better shifts and you can concentrate on the track.
I admit that there is slightly more to go wrong with the SMG but remember underneath they are both an almost identical Getrag manual 6 spd. The only difference being the automated clutch & gear selector hydraulics. Main advantage of an SMG is they have a lot of built in engine protection measures and they are much kinder to the clutch (so long as launch control is not used). Ive had both and they are both good, but at the end of the day the SMGs hydraulics can change gear faster that my arm!
Don't be hating on smg. It's a manual too. H-pattern, traditional manual has its place in car history, but now newer transmissions are slowly taking over.
SMG M3 is faster than manual on the straight line & I think that's y the manual here was chosen to have 18' rims to make up the loss by having less weight !!
Whether or not someone has driven a SMG gear box is irrelevant...the mere thought of 'shifting a manual gear' is still 'manly' in MY OPINION, no matter how many newer cars use paddle shifters and if you can't get around the fact that people can voice THEIR OPINION w/out having to 'try things out' is idiotic...

LoL, y is everybody saying " smg ftw " blah blah when clearly the winner of this race would be whoever got the holeshot LoL...both cars are stock...the gear ratios are the same sooooooo...Yeah LoL. manual is ALWAYS more fun!!!...And those who say SMG is better obviously never raced a 6spd ESS e46 m3 at the track LoL....I love working my hands and feet in the race and not just hitting a " paddle "....

Ill take a manual any day just because SMGs cost 7-8K when you break them, and they havent been proven yet. The E46 looks much more robust than the E36 IMHO. I would put in the Signature Motoring performance intake kit for only around $150 and gain up to 13HP on the stock output for the 330i and a bit less for the 325 and 328. I highly recommend this item, see my youtube channel for the action video on it.

Do SMG and manual m3's have the same gear ratios and gear lengths (short/tall gears)? which one had an advantage in a strait line disregarding shifting speed. is SMG heavier?

@joseabreu00 The purists drivers will always prefer a clutch pedal. The ability to rev match on your own and row your own gear is priceless to some people.
Not to mention I dont care what BMW advertises as the shift speed, listening to the SMG shift from outside the car, sounds like a lazy powershift. Most people cannot outdrive the SMG, some can. If you cant drive you wont wont understand.
Newer dual clutch transmissions shift MUCH faster than these E46 SMG's.

What do you mean by more comfortable? Both drive identicle, with a 6spd you just have to shift 3-4 times and you're cruising exactly the same. Also you don't get a sports car like an M3 for comfort if you wanted that why not get a 5 or 7 series.

obviously you didnt look close enough, on 1:27 you can see the gears in the dash which means its the smg, also has paddle shifters and it has a small pause between shifts, i think the smg performs better, it can take more power, bmw made the smg so it could shift faster than a manual.

My opinion is the following: The manual could be faster, if you are a professional or almost professional driver. An average guy, who cannot use the heel and toe and double clutch shifting racing technics as fast as hell, will not to be able to do a better time on a racetrack with the manual. So if you are an everyday driver it could be a better coice an SMG- because you can produce better shifts and you can concentrate on the track.

I admit that there is slightly more to go wrong with the SMG but remember underneath they are both an almost identical Getrag manual 6 spd. The only difference being the automated clutch & gear selector hydraulics. Main advantage of an SMG is they have a lot of built in engine protection measures and they are much kinder to the clutch (so long as launch control is not used). Ive had both and they are both good, but at the end of the day the SMGs hydraulics can change gear faster that my arm!

Don't be hating on smg. It's a manual too. H-pattern, traditional manual has its place in car history, but now newer transmissions are slowly taking over.

SMG M3 is faster than manual on the straight line & I think that's y the manual here was chosen to have 18' rims to make up the loss by having less weight !!

when the camera man zooms in on the speedo, you can see the Gear selector (5), and right above that you can see the bars for the SMG tranny mode

Whether or not someone has driven a SMG gear box is irrelevant...the mere thought of 'shifting a manual gear' is still 'manly' in MY OPINION, no matter how many newer cars use paddle shifters and if you can't get around the fact that people can voice THEIR OPINION w/out having to 'try things out' is idiotic...
