Atari thought they had the rights to the game(Which they did but only for the arcade) which is why they sued Nintendo when Nintendo claimed that Atari was infringing on their rights to the game.

This is a well known FACT among anybody that knows anything about this game.

If anything the theme song, which is the old Russian folk song Korobeiniki should give you a clue. The original invtentor got his game copied by a couple of British guys who spread it in the west. IBM got it on their computers by 1987.

Elorg gave their last order: Atari had the arcade right, Nintendo had the home console rights to tetris. Atari told Tengen(Their home console maker) to make Tetris for NES. Nintendo saw that so they sued and Atari lost
