  • @catonic it's a process that's needed to archive perfection and yes they get paid a shit loads for making these masterpieces!

  • Theres a reason y these pieces are so expensive and admired...they are masterpieces!!!

  • so much work, but it's sooo beautiful...love the runway!

  • now i understand why they're so expensive..theres so much work in each piece

  • Wow! Amazing!

  • I think karl should put more detail into his sketches for couture. Some of them look like scribbles so how can the atelier know exactly what details of embriodery e.c he wants?

When i sketch i put as much detail as i can onto the page.

  • I love it

  • I have a new appreciation for these lovely textiles. I can see why these dresses cost a lot of money. The craftsmanship is extraordinary. this outfit is no ready to wear garment and a person has to be an excellent cutter as well. my hats off to the wonderful textile artist. Thanks for this upload!

  • My God its so painstaking, I think everyone should have a look at this video, the craftmanship is phenomenal!!!

  • i could watch this for hours

  • @jazzchelseajazz Then you should watch Signe Chanel. c:

  • People people, without Karl Lagerfeld there would be no Chanel and without the seamstresses there would be no Chanel. They need each other. They are both geniuses! I mean Karl Lagerfeld doesn't "just" sketch, he had AMAZING talent, I would like to see some of you coming up with the ideas that he has. Just watch the documentary signé Chanel and you will get SO much respect for the entire house of Chanel and everyone who works there

  • @catonic Immigrant seamstresses? Chanel is in France. They're French.

  • "immigrant seamstress".....OMG...I laughed and laughed and laughed. 'Tis a joke, no?

  • LOVE SEEING THE PROCESS!

  • i think karl lagerfeld doesn't have the most innovative ideas anymore

but for chanel..... i think he still does the trick damn well

and signe chanel made me appreciate him more as well

  • @utopia752 I completely agree.

  • 1. what were the blue and green crayons for?

    2. what is that motorizing pressing device?

    3. What was the talcum powder for?

    4. Do those immigrant seamstress get paid a lot?

  • i love Cecile de atelier flou ;)

  • wait i dont understand what thy did with the crayon, tracing paper, and that white powder? how does that put studs onto leather? if thats what the end product is..

  • @cocotiks She was making a pattern. The needle without thread poked holes into the tracing paper and then the talc is rubbed over it to transfer the pattern to the fabric. Then they stitch over it.

  • @cocotiks to mark which stud/sequin goes where.

  • Beautiful craft work! So many details!

  • Holy s*** I would be seeing spots all day long if I had to that! Those women sure have the patience! Amazing how they make the clothes

  • Wow truly amazing!!!

  • This is fascinating. They are all truly artists.

  • i dont think we can ever properly apreachiate how much blood and effort goes into the making of designer clothes.

  • Beautiful. Simply beautiful.

  • Whats she doing at 2.25 and3.20 ? Like how are they sewing the sequins on?

  • @MyDancer97

They are using a Tambour hook.

  • I also don't understand the needle part at 3:03, what is the lady doing? Picking the beads with the needles?

  • @MermaidMederis i think she was poking holes in the sequence lol

  • It's an awesome work of these ateliers. They build up art pieces.

  • how many days does it take to make a Haute Couture dress? After the sketch?

  • @MermaidMederis it could takes weeks, sometimes months depending on the intricacy of the piece. Everything is handmade and hand sewed.

  • @akadaka69 Thanks. Normally, how many couture collections a year? One for each season... or something..?

  • @MermaidMederis well ready to wear i the primary collection which tends to translate into a commercial way. Haute Couture is much more exclusive. And much more expensive, obviously to create. Designers sometimes may sell the pieces to faithful clients or very wealthy patrons, and often times they don't sell any piece. So yes, it only happens once a season so twice a year, and only a select few designers actually do it. Its more to show off the art of couture and the high of fashion craftsmanship

  • Ignorant people fail to understand that designing clothes is not just sketching and receiving paychecks, there is so much more than that. In addition, when you stop and think for a minute that Karl Lagerfeld designs 6 collections a year for Chanel alone INCLUDING 2 COUTURE, plus around 4 collections for Fendi and 2 for the KarlLagerfeld brand, that makes around 12 collections each year of roughly 45 pieces each, which imply EXTRAORDINARY amounts of effort and time. Its is a SHITLOAD of work.

  • @videocrack246 EXACTLY !!! and anyone who does not understand the importance of what a Designer particularly as couturier does needs only to look at what JUST happened at Dior without Galliano !!

  • that's funny, but its true... not that brilliant of a collection, was it?. ANOTHER thing that bothers me! Ignorant people are now like why did they fire Galliano, then? Well, the whole "situation" was naturally going to stain the Christian Dior name, it already did actually. Arnault and Toledano had no choice but to fire him, AS MUCH AS IT HURT THEM (because Galliano was INDEED the correct-est designer for the Dior brand) but they just morally couldn't keep him hired! Aahh, ignorance bothers me!

  • @videocrack246

    >implying Karl Lagerfeld actyually designs any of that shit and doesn't just get interns to do it.

  • Don't be ignorant. And if you don't understand fashion, an you evidently do not, don't criticize people's work.

  • @videocrack246 is he still designing for Chloe also?

  • No. Not anymore, he left it quite a while ago.

  • @bluec0caine Karl left Chloe in the 90's. Stella McCartney replaced him and there's been about 4 designers since she left to focus on her own label.

  • now that's what i call dedication

  • i hate chanel

    but i adore the ateliers

  • Damn, if I did all that work and then had someone call my work butt ugly (i.e. Joan Rivers) I think I'd kill something.

  • She cuts it kinda slovenly :(

  • This is so amazing! I really love the video.

  • @Metronomic sorry to disappoint you, but Gabrielle did sew. Infact she spent most of he life making hats to get by before branching out into clothing, which see made for her young sister mostly... Learn your history ass..

  • SO interesting, thanks for posting!

  • beautiful!

  • So much work goes into it and the people who put so much effort and time into this are INCREDIBLE!

  • their work truly is art. the people who make these garments are the real stars of the fashion industry.

  • That's the whole reason why I love haute couture, the detailing and professional craftsmanship is mind blowing.

  • @oozer23 LOL same here

  • What wonderful work!

That's exactly what I admire at the luxury industry.

Everything done by hand in a craft way as if they were working on a Renaissance's Guild. I find it so cute...we can't know if it's work or art.

  • Omg it's so labour intensive

  • amazing!!!

  • Um, Karl Lagerfeld had to go through this when he was young too, so don't think he was just born into Chanel.

  • amazing work.

  • Karl Lagerfeld is paid for his creations, and brands like Chanel, treat their entire team like a luxury team.

The seamstresses and embroiderers work hard to please Karl, and the reason they still do this is to get paid the way they do. If I was doing what I love and drives me, and still get paid, I wouldn't quit my job. and even more so if I worked for Chanel :)

  • beautiful!

  • its so frustrating seeing them bead the fabric!!! ugh!!

  • Chanel=Quality fashion.

  • Wow..THIS is ah-mazing to watch!

  • Comment removed

  • OMG thats hard

  • Haute Couture : According to funky wagnels... means Whore Culture.

Every level of this culture deals with whoring oneself!! LMAO!!!!

  • This Video always amazes me.... The Couture should seriously be in a league all its own.

  • The woman making the pattern in the beginning looks so happy. She's in her zone. It's nice to see someone like that in such a stressful business.

  • It looks so weird to see Karl's sketch and the real clothes. o.0

  • its funny how much effort and money would go into making the clothes only to be worn maybe a few times

  • If you really want a behind the scenes looks at Chanel haute couture look up Signe Chanel! It's a documentary by Loic Prigent.

  • omg very nice good job

  • amazing

  • ahhh it is gorgeous though!

  • why is everyone bashing karl. Without karl they would have no gown to make and their talent would be put to rest.

  • Lagerfeld does his part, with the ideas and the concept of what is going to work right and what is not.

The craftsmanship here is the result of the dedication, caring, meticulous planning of those people: they know they are important. The appreciation for the finished product give them a sense of great pride and accomplishment. They could look for another job if they were not well paid, but they love what they do. That is the most fascinating thing in fashion: Love and dedication.

  • Wow this is beautiful and amazing.

  • So Fabulous

  • wow....all that is hand made.....

  • Im sorry to keep commenting but I have to make a statement about 3:49. BEAUTIFUL. I was like WOW. Bless them all...so talented!

  • OMG

  • Karl will sketch the dress then the designers will do the rest

  • a lot of you making comments don't have a clue about fashion, none the less about haute couture, there is no dout that this ladies are super talented but they didn't just pull that dress design out of they ___, so for the few of you that said that Karl doesn't do anything, that is his vision and design talent and this ladies just putted together, this a DESIGNER not an semstress.

  • Wow! What stunning work. I'm going to start doing that kind of beading. Wish me luck, please. = )

  • And Karl Lagerfeld laughs all the way to the bank....while these proffessionals works day and night!

  • What is interesting is that the famous "House" designers do not actually make anything. It's the Ittaliers(sp?) that do all the work. Laugerfeld and the others just draw the concept or idea. It's up to the "workers" to make the dream come alive.

  • If the model gets paid more than the hard working people that make the outfit I'm gonna cry :(

  • that's why it is expensive

  • Craftmanship at it's best! Love it!

  • Impressive haha

  • wow i want one of those beading machines

  • WOW!

  • couture is nothing to be scoffed at. it is a serious craft. watching this you can understand why couture is so expensive. it takes many hands to make one dress.

  • that's pretty!

  • I would love to own a piece like this!

  • whit out the seamstress Chanel would be nothing afterall Coco Chanel started out as a seamstress

  • very nice!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Vive L'artisan!

  • they must be so careful, because all of these clothes are made from the finest fabrics available.

  • this vid makes us realize how to appreciate couture......so much hard work has been put through to make even one dress...

  • Karl is the mastermind behind it though.

He creates the idea, and puts on paper

    and

    They do the menial work

    its quite simple.

  • @kikyoreincarnation3

This is artisanal craftsmanship, not menial work. It is not quite simple. There is synergy between the design and the craft. Look at their hands - look at the relaxation, discernment and sensitivity in those fingers, and the way the eye-hand connection is reflected in every stage of the dressmaking.

These workers are skilled, not menials. Menial work can be done effectively by anyone who puts their mind to it, but this craft requires a touch that not everyone has.

  • quanto darei per lavorarci come ricamatrice...

  • wow, I will never look at a Haute Couture show the same ever again.

  • Fantastique!!

  • does anyone know what the name of that special needle that lady uses to put on the sequins is called. It's towards the end before she flips it over... I think it would make sewing sequins a lot easier would it? than the traditional method of stitching it down one at a time..

  • @bishbangboosh katan needle and its really easy to find i know JoAnn's fabrics even carry them

  • Beauty requires sacrifice. And i give ode to those fortunate ladies.

  • alucinante

  • Oh my gosh, all those beads and sequins, looks incredibly annoying to sow, but so beautiful :(

  • wuuuauuu!!

    donde consigo eso para bordar!

  • It's such a shame that these works of art are put on 14-year-old girls with no clue of the grandeur. Later they are sold off to socialite flakes with new money. Anatema!

  • anyone know who is the very last model?

  • thx

  • of course not is Imogen Clarke

  • they work so damn hard! Bet they dont get paid a fraction of what Karl does

  • @x109256 but i bet they still get paid a lot more than your average job!!!

  • @Cla900 Yes! But we all know Karl gets paid in boatloads! and thats fantastic for him, he has earned that, but the seamstresses put in an incredible amount of effort. So they probably do get paid much higher than your average job, but compared to Karl, they must be making peanuts!!

  • @x109256 That is absolutely not true. I work with a wonderful woman at a bank and her sister in law works as a seamstress for Chanel and she lives in Downtown manhattan and lives an amazing life.

  • @ijojoi159 She probably does. But you should have read my last reply to someone.

  • @x109256 and i just did, i didnt get to read through everyones comments.

  • @ijojoi159 Well considering that Chanel is based in France that would be impossible now wouldnt it...

  • @metronomic1 yes and forever 21 is based in the USA but makes their products in China and India and Turkey.

  • @ijojoi159 You are a fucking moron. And a liar. Chanel does no manufacturing in Manhattan. PERIOD. Comparing forever 21 to Chanel show your complete lack of intelligence

  • @metronomic1 It shows a lack of fashion knowledge, not intelligence. Fashion isn't for everyone.

  • @x109256 Well, of course they don't get paid as much as the CREATIVE DIRECTOR or what ever he is, the soul of the company... but trust me, they get paid.

  • @SixtenBengt

They get paid very well for thier sewing skills.

  • @x109256 and I guess the model either get paid as much as Karl Lagerfeld! Oh unfair the world is!

  • @x109256 I am sure these women are compensated quite sufficiently....it is the 21st Century, and this is Chanel, not a slave labor camp. These women seem competent and intelligent - if they weren't happy, I'm sure they'd find someplace else to be. Of course they do not get paid what Karl Lagerfeld does...HE is the genius behind Chanel today.

  • @x109256 If a collection is good, yes, he takes the credit. But if it is bad, he takes the blame also. It is his head on the line, no one elses. It isn't so much about the "work" as it is about the responsiblity he carries.

  • @x109256 Well I bet they don't cair, I would love to work for Karl even though I wouldnt get paid a lot. I'd love to be working on such art pieces as he disign's. For them it is already a dream and a big honour to work for him because this is the highest you can get in tayloring. And I actually know that they get paid very well indeed. And that they like it.

  • i admire their dedication.

  • @x109256 Yes, but thats what they CHOSE to do. And I bet you Karl did the same exact thing, when he first started out making his own designs. When your as high as Karl..you have people do the work. While he says what's right..and goes to meetings..and works with other designers..and creates. And Im not saying this in a mean way at all.

  • @x109256 and you know how much they get paid? you know how much karl gets pais? no. so shut up.

  • @mariahfan999 XD

  • @x109256 yes but lagerfeld worked very hard over the years to get to where he is now, so he has earned it.

  • And Karl Lagerfeld sits back, and tells them what he likes and doesn't like.

  • well it sucks but he's the one with the money.

  • @zimalien And he should try to do wht this women does, in every each dress, just then, he could be named a completly artist, Coco Did it. He Must too!. jajjaja. sorry i love chanel, but, his arrogance, is paranoic. even that! i like him. =)

  • but no one does what he does.....both parts are indispensable....without Karl the seamstresses would not know what to do, no idea...without the seamstresses Chanel would not exist....

  • @zimalien karl is the bad one and the others are the god, it's stupid!

  • @zimalien if he gets any more botox he won't be able to talk!

  • @zimalien 'yeah, why? Because the designs aren't by the women in this video! Whats wrong with people.

  • @zimalien Thats correct. He is the designer, the one with the vision. Without Karl Lagerfeld there would be no modern Chanel. Coco did the same thing. A designers job is to design not sew.

  • @zimalien believe me, they love doing this. This is their dream.

  • @zimalien but you also have to realize for them, its not hard work. they have been doing this for decades. it would be harder for them to sit at a round table and mentally create a trend than to physically create trendy garments.

  • @ataoldotcom wow ok you should see signe chanel or other chanel documentaries

the ladies behind chanel still have to work very hard, even after all these years

and it's mentally hard for them as well; you have to have loaaads and loads of patience

  • wow this is amazing i give my respects to the people who make them they put a lot of effort to it

some people may think of haute couture clothing as just simple clothes but they are not they have been done with hard work by the desgner and the atelier and everybody in their crew :)

  • wow it's amazing!!!

  • hand made !!!!!!

  • Do anyone knows what song plays at the end of video?

  • bulletproof by la roux

  • Wow, that must have taken a long time. Really interesting, it would have been nice to have some kind of auditory narration explaining what they are doing though.

  • you should watch signe chanel! its on youtube somewhere...

  • beautiful!!!!! this work is astounding!!

  • nice video. very interesting.

  • perfection in details <3

  • wow. all the details are so crazy! (: i love the dress!

  • quick question. does anybody know what type of tool they use to embroider the clothing in 3:31? it reminds me of some type of crochet hook, but i'm not sure..

  • its called a tambour needle. google it and u could find a cheap one for like 20 bucks. using it is fairly easy once you get used to it

  • great. thanks!! :)

  • I cannot help but holding my breath watching these incredible artists doing the incredible beading work... This must be a dying art which should be preserved.

  • OMG... I'll be learning to embroider like this from the source...in a WK!!!

  • THIS IS ART. AMAZING!!!

  • veeeeery interesting

    i loooooooove it

  • someone knows the music of the intro?

  • i think it's called "bulletproof", by la roux.

  • yes that is right, thanks alot

  • La Roux - Bulletproof

  • Too bad there's no narration! I'm curious to know if these craftswomen make most/any of their own clothes or clothes for their family members.

  • I´m shocked!!
