If you want to get down to technicality, there is a hard disc in a laptop, The CDJ is basically buffering audio material in the cd. The CDJ is a computer with a 40X CD rom drive. When you scratch on the CDJ jogwheel, you are scratching the buffer, not the disc directly. How cheese is to mix with a glorified mouse.
@GROMSF except that to select a track youve got to click through the program to find it. All the indicators are there with the cdj and you dont have to click around with a mouse as every function has controls directly. That hard disc in the laptop isnt technically a music disk, and youre still just playing a computer at the end of the day. a cdj is a computer but will do nothing without an audio disk. If all a computer was wher a disk u might be on to something
@GROMSF Bad Boy still rocks clubs and festivals all over the world. He will tell you, its about the music and youre in the same camp as him if youre using serato as its still DIGITAL. There are limitless things you can do on turntables that are determined by the imagination and skills of the particular dj! I wouldnt deny that a lot of pretty damn awesome stuff has been produced using turntables alone although i wouldnt call their ability limitless. Its not like you can loop a beat on one turntable while u mix a melody in on another and layer vocals on a third. You really cant loop or set cue points on a turntable. Beat juggling is like looping but requires 2 decks.
@housemanchi So i suppose Id agree that you can do a wide variety of things with two decks as is demonstrated by people like Craze and Q-bert but there is a limit that physical vinyl puts on perimeter control and settings. Its not like you can do much else if your busy juggling beats to create a back drop, I mean unless you have a third arm

And there are tons of other things!!! Turntable vinyl dj's are by far the highest skilled!!!

Like it or not, keeping four sources in time while effecting, sample/vocal dropping and eqing and reconstructing rhythms or doing remixes on the fly, that all takes quite a bit of attention, I dare say more than keeping track of two decks. Unless your using auto sync you still need to know what it takes to mix and then some

@housemanchi I play on 1000s and still use vinyl at home. I havnt yet felt the need to go to computers. Ive always felt that DJ aught to stand for disc jockey not DELL jockey. Mixing on vinyl has a distinct feel and as some players come close to emulating it, Im not sure it will ever be just the same. I agree tho that mixing on vinyl is more involved and requires a more sensitive feel for getting it done well. Im sure weve all seen djs pitch a record up or down so obviously that it sounds as if the record is warped.

Man being able to scratch on the right deck and do the fader cuts left handed is tricky as hell. For the past 10 years that ive been messing around on the tables ive been a left hand scratcher and a right hand fader cutter. but the last few weeks i been switching it around and tryna get good on my right side too. One thing i noticed is you dont have a lot of arm room on the right deck as you do the left deck because the side of the record i you scratch on is closer to the fader on the right side

Bad Boy Bill ROCKS!!! I have seen him 4 times live. I have been DJing for a little over 10 years and know the skill it takes... I have never heard him trainwreck a mix like some of the other big names (Tiesto, David Guetta <many many times.) For all you haters on here, go out and get some turntables, a mixer, and some records, spend 10 years locked in your basement and try to even get CLOSE to this good. I agree about his older style (the IHR funky style) being the best though.

@housemanchi I play on 1000s and still use vinyl at home. I havnt yet felt the need to go to computers. Ive always felt that DJ aught to stand for disc jockey not DELL jockey. Relax man, its not like CDJs play themselves and turntables are never going to just disappear. Things are just moving in the direction of live remixing and away from just two sound sources to mix on. Carl Cox used to spin on three turntables and he was damn good. If these guys could do more on turn tables they'da stuck 2em

@housemanchi I wouldnt debate that one is better than the other. Im just making the case that theres more to know as technology advances. Mixing on vinyl has a distinct feel and as some players come close to emulating it, Im not sure it will ever be just the same. I agree tho that mixing on vinyl is more involved and requires a more sensitive feel for getting it done well. Im sure weve all seen djs pitch a record up or down so obviously that it sounds as if the record is warped.

And people make and post up mixes that are made with computer programs and they get all these props for being great dj's, TOTAL RUBBISH!!! Most people listing to these mixes don't know the difference between being on-beat or off-beat! They don't know the skill it takes to be a real dj, a digital dj's don't have it!!!

Man being able to scratch on the right deck and do the fader cuts left handed is tricky as hell. For the past 10 years that ive been messing around on the tables ive been a left hand scratcher and a right hand fader cutter. but the last few weeks i been switching it around and tryna get good on my right side too. One thing i noticed is you dont have a lot of arm room on the right deck as you do the left deck because the side of the record i you scratch on is closer to the fader on the right side

He has the decks direct to the Mixer & he's advancing the tracks on the CD's. #2- All the top DJ's are using Serato. Just like BBB, I come from the days of knob mixers, reel to reel & vinyl. Bad Boy Bill ROCKS!!! I have seen him 4 times live. I have been DJing for a little over 10 years and know the skill it takes... I have never heard him trainwreck a mix like some of the other big names (Tiesto, David Guetta <many many times.) For all you haters on here, go out and get some turntables, a mixer, and some records, spend 10 years locked in your basement and try to even get CLOSE to this good. I agree about his older style (the IHR funky style) being the best though.
