  • Great ! Thx

  • RC looks at his most daddyish in this clip with those khakis on, soo hottt. he supplied most of my teenage jo fantasies.

  • @BlackSheep0ne I loved Flyboys lol. Yea, I hear you though. I would love to see it more realistic myself. I just love to watch great old planes from WWI and WWII in the movies I guess. :)

  • Great post! I Met Pappy in '87. He signed my book and took a pic with me. Dude was usin a walker, smokin unfiltered PallMalls , drinkin a Pabst blue ribbon... Get some

  • Hanks and Speilberg did such a great job with "The Pacific". Its time for somebody to bring back Baa Baa Black Sheep and have it be a full television season series. Were talkin at least 5 seasons. Enough with this reality TV garbage!

  • @DPGmaximus The problem with that is that it would cost way too much to gathe what few F4U's (not to mention the lack of available A6M's) out there for a show, maintenance on these aircraft plus insurance, etc. And the CGI version of these aircraft would not do them justice. But it would be real nice.

  • @BlackSheep0ne I hear you on that man, but if you look at the battle scenes from the 2001 film, "Pearl Harbor" you got to admit it did indeed look very realistic. What Hollywood can do now a days with ray tracing can really make animated images like what you saw in that film look very true to life.

  • @DPGmaximus Well.....nah, I have that movie and the "dogfight" scenes were absolutely WRONG!

Yeah, the planes looked OK but the behavior was off. Let me explain. The A6M2's used in the attack on Pearl were not armored, so one hit from a .50 cal would bake them blow, not reip wings off like in the movie.

Another thing, P-40's can't dogfight with Zero's, they can't match them in a turn.

But in the movie they looked OK. I just hope that if they do go that way, they don't do it like Flyboys!

  • @DPGmaximus For me, personally, the 2001 Pearl Harbor was a disgrace. Zeros were zipping around like TIE fighters in Star Wars. Tora Tora Tora looks a LOT more realistic (despite the dated acting/dialog), IMO. As a History major, I had high hopes for the 2001 version - esp since my granddad was on a destroyer tender (the Dobbin AD-3).........and I was hoping to see something stirring. Oh, well.

  • @WarriorPoet01 P.S. - I meant to say ".......was on a destroyer tender (the Dobbin AD-3) in the middle of the harbor DURING the attack on Pearl Harbor." Like most vets, he didn't say much about that day when I asked him about it.

  • great post..........brings back memories.

  • So much history that can be brought to life with TV, instead they have so called "reality shows" and garbage....

  • The truth is, none of the VMF-214 pilots were ever in trouble with the brass, or had a disregard for the regulations except for Boyington himself. All the surviving squadron members universally hated the show because of how it made them appear. An excellent book is "Once Were Eagles" by Frank Walton, VMF-214's intelligence officer. Walton (a once and former LAPD officer) was specifically assigned to VMF-214 to keep Boyington -who was a heavy, and beligerent, drinker- out of trouble.

  • I lived in Fresno ca way back in the early seventies.. Pappy Boyington was a neighbor of one of my child hood friends I never met him but my friend said he was a really nice guy

  • I was meant to be born in the late 20's I Love the fight, i n the clip. It shows a huge difference in our time to then, Civility, yes even in fights there was a sort of respect also it could be a marine thing too. People of today are different and not for the better, the fight today would have been you mofo bang its over

  • I think it was conrad that said the show didn't do well at first because the title was misleading. people didn't tune in..anyway I miss these action adventure series. .

  • This show had a huge impact on me, the Corsair and the P-51 are the hottest planes ever built. Jets are just moving videogames with standoff weapons, back in the day you couldn't "stand off" you had to get in there and get dirty. MUCH belated thanks for the post, now I dare u to knock this battery off my shoulder...

  • i love that show it on RTV every sunday at 9:00 pm

  • Truly a great man, no doubt. But read books other than his and you will learn that his claims dont match the dates that true history holds.....

  • Eww! Blue leisure suit with white shoes. I had a blue suit once.

  • I would like to find a set of DVDs with all the shows. They don't spend that kind of money for planes and locations in TV anymore. They like to fill the screen with big faces and moving lips...sounding important in those NCIS, CIS and all those murder solving shows.. Probably all done in one room, and then all those cartoon types showing a knife twisting in a heart, or a bullet tearing. Sucks. I wish people would stop watching that trash, then maybe Hollywood would bring back good shows.

  • I am confused as to Conrads real age. In all of his bio's his d.o.b. was 3-1-35. But in more recent ones it says his real one was 3-1-29. In court papers in a recent lawsuit he was the defendant in lists his d.o.b as 3-1-29.

  • @nenzi671 3-1-5 (1935) On is Piper Malibu Airplane his tail Number was 315. Call into his radio show and ask him his tail number on the Malibu if you do not believe me and also he would get a kick out you calling in and asking him this question, he loved to fly that airplane.

  • Who would play "Pappy," you asked?...why, it would be no other than that little homosexual prick from the movie TITANIC...what's his name, Penis Dicapitation, who plays Charles...something like that. In the remake, they would have Dicapita...play a fag running around the airbase accusing the fellow airmen for not sharing their dirty underwears with him, or something like that...WHO KNOWS, WHO CARES!!!

  • I sure hope they will never remake this 1976 teevee version of BSS; they would contaminate it with all kinds of Hollywoods unfacted BS that the men who flew and died in those Corsiars fighting the Japanese in WWII would die in vain...

  • This show should get a Remake. Who could play Gregory "Pappy" Boyington now ?

  • Loved the show too as a kid. Didn't know that the REAL Boyington helped send it to TV. Great show and great interview. LOL.

  • My dad used to watch this show when I was a kid; he's a Vietnam era Marine. I just saw the Corsair at Andrews AFB Air Show. Great aircraft, great show!

  • Thank you for posting this!

  • A true hero Pappy!! R.I.P.

  • If more young kids today took time to look at REAL heroes like Boyington and read about these guys-instead of playing dopey video games-the world might be a better place.

My neighbor was like Bob Conrad-only 15- but they let him join-he flew and met Boyington.

Times I spend with him beat any video game hands down

    k

  • I guess anyone who has, will live, thanks for keeping her safe!

The gal in Kalamazoo, Michigan, is the gal for so many people including my Mom, Frances K Clemmens. Wife of WWII Walter H. Clemmens Jr. WWII Vet! May we all rest in peace!

    Until then, "Cheers!"

  • Incredible!! The real Boyington with Robert Conrad!! o_o A great video!!

  • Had the honour of meeting Pappy Boyington at the 1978 Confederate Airshow in Harlingen Texas. He was a great guy to talk to. I have his autographed Biography. As a member of the Canadian Warplane Heritage Museum I was one of the support crew for the museums FG-1D Corsair at this show. A great experience and one I will always cherish

  • This was like the Lost In Space of TV world war two shows.

  • This is before NBC Today Show became a show with a liberal agenda. It's sad, very sad.

  • all 3 networks have liberal agendas. I miss the old days, before all this political correctness.

  • @kevlarunderwear22

So do I, but frankly, I've never felt more hopeful. The dickless wonders have pushed us real Americans about as far as they could and it's just about to bite them in their candy asses. The best days are ahead. I PROMISE.

And frankly, it wouldn't have happened without the little millipede who's currently stinking up The White House. We'd never have awakened without the threat that he and his ilk pose.

    Norm

  • @theshadow1932 I agree with everything you said

  • @theshadow1932 I agree completely.

  • @kevlarunderwear22

as opposed to the right wing fairy tales we get from FOX

  • @ironthing

MSNBC - where we hear the news as it is sent directly from the White House after further edit from (ex secretary) Gibbs. MadCow, Dobermann and the lush Matthews...3 dopes infected with liberal rabies.

  • @kevlarunderwear22

    Politically correct...

isn't that a contradiction in terms?

  • What?

  • @reindeertigerteam

better than the pure right wing fiction that is allegedly news on the FOX

  • @reindeertigerteam

This is before left wing Jews took control of all three networks and turned them into ideologically driven platforms to be used to help spread and indoctrinate people with their liberal political views and social agendas.

Leslie Moonves: President of CBS. Jewish. Jeff Zucker: President of NBC. Jewish. Ben Sherwood: President of ABC. Jewish.

If you have a problem with the left in America; "then you have a problem with the Jew in America.

  • @Hawkshadow70 Has more to do with being liberal and tied to the media then their backgrounds. I doubt any of them actually practice their religion. There are conservative jewish people with strong values who find the networks a lost cause too.

  • @Hawkshadow70 i don't. I have a problem with bigots and people who believe in far fetched conspiracies

  • The F4U-4 and the F6F-5 were considered comparable to the Fw 190 A-5 by the USN test pilots in Fla in 1944 with the advantage going to the Fw in roll and climb, guns and Vmax at sea level. The Fw was tons lighter than both and had a better power to weight ratio. The brits flew both in Europe and the Fw190-5 was a year older than the comp a\c and had limited spares support. Mr Grumman modeled the F8F off of the Fw and flew one himself in NY

  • Interesting comment because I too always held the belief that the only Navy-Marine Corp aircraft that could match up against the FW-190 or ME109 would have been the Corsair. The Corsair was similar to a P-47 in power and perhaps weight. I'm not to familiar with the F6F-5, but its performance had to be considerably increased from earlier Wildcats. ..

  • if the A-4 and 5 190 was so hot then what would explain the P-51D which wasnt as good as the F4U wiping the floor with 190s no problem.

  • The real Boyington seems to be american indian! Who is the pretty lady introducing this segment (not tehw oman sitting with Conrad and boyington).

  • Pardon me: the woman!

  • His mother was Black, Father white and he fought all of the time, He really showed his mettle when he was in pow camp in Japan. He kicked the bottle and never gave in.

  • Boyington was some flavor of Sioux (not sure which nation),

The woman doing the intro: It's bugging me that I can't remember-- I'm trying to think if Maureen O'Sullivan was on the Today show at this point.

  • Ahhh the F4AU Corsair... One of the Best damned planes of WWII. It was Preceeded by the F2G Corsair, but the F2G had some Stability problems and killed quite a few young pilots, but hey fixed them in the F-4AU. The plane could climb to 30k feet in 30 minutes, and that was fast back then. This plane helped turn the tide of the Pacific, and was better than the IJN Mitsubishi Zero.

  • The F4U was built by Chance Vought and was their second Corsair, Vought named their Navy birds after Sea Dogs..Pirate, Corsair, Buccaneer, etc.The F4U developed from the dash 1 to the dash 4 in ww 2 and continued to the -7 or -8. The F2G was built by Goodyear and was their 2nd fighter # assigned by BuNo. You can tell them apart because the oil cooler is on the wrong intake. It roughly conforms to the -4 but is a dedicated interceptor with limited stores, R2800w 90in boost @t/o full left rudder.

  • Unfortunately, Pappy was a liar and wrote his "book" full of lies about himself and thie men with whom he served. These men served honorably and with distinction, while Boyington was a ace, he was also a drunkard and a vain liar.

  • Great vid, thanks for sharing. Definitely brings back memories of the 70s. Loved that series.

  • I like Conrads macho power testosterone drinks....a true health hero of mine...

  • I loved the show..and still do even till today!

  • respect from france mr boyington, your book is incredible, like clostermann's one.

    thanks for all

  • A TRUE American Hero. Semper Fi Pappy.

  • ive read greg's book IT IS AMAZING!!!!!!!!!!

  • Thanks for posting this---always was interested in WWII, and loved this show!

  • the show tht launched John Laroquette's career. i never liked jets, gimme those ol' prop jobs anyday. thx for posting.

  • thank you so much for posting this video. Colonel Boyington, I salute you. Rest peacefully.

  • check out those white shoes !

    Gotta luv em !

  • What A Killer Show . Inspired me To Fly . being a Navy Brat Living On Air stations I always Looked to the sky and to amazing men Flying these planes and Jets SO FAASST . I Joined The Navy Loved every Minute seen the world ,Gone through Desert Storm Conflict Made Me a MAN . Pray and Support Our Troops They Sacrifice It All.

  • Boyinton was a hard living SOB by all accounts . His drinking and his hard living lifestyle made him what he was . Haveing met the man in Chandler Az in the late 70's and read his book I can say from all reports the "Show me a hero and Ill prove hes a bum" comment is basicly aimed at himself.

  • I met the real pappy at Oshkosh one year as a teen ager, I was so nervous I didnt say a word and froze, my mom with me spoke for me. He undestood and was a class act all the way.

May he rest in peace, ....hes earned it !

  • Thats a classic story, My old man named me after him, Gregory not Pappy ...it wasnt until my Dad died a few years ago that I started to really look into who "Pappy" really was. He was a great man that deserves respect. After all the good and bad I've read about the guy I feel privileged to some how be connected to Pappy in some way. Cheers

  • great video!! Always loved the TV show...

  • Think you are making a huge assumption. The TV show was at the height of its popularity, and yes he did get money for his story. He didn't seem to be particularly hurting.

I support all the brave people who fought for our country. We idolized him for the values that we felt he embodied.

The issue was how a small act of kindness would've reinforced all that we had admired him for. godbless.

  • True. "Heroes" don't really exist, though. They're just you and me, thrown into chaos and misery. What that does to a person I never want to learn. I love the man..and I don't want a damned thing from him. I figure he's given me enough.

  • Well it's different looking at age 42 than it was at 10. What makes a man a warrior probably blinded him to the consequences of snubbing children.

But I' gained from that crushing experience. As a man I'm highly sensitive to the fears, and hopes of small children and I make it a practice to always be kind. It's why we are all unique, and can choose to extract good or ill from our experiences.

With that said, we was still a major prick that day! Hero warrior, prick to children.

  • oh yah. i totally agree. kids shouldn't ever have to deal with old vets. my dad was a 'nam ranger and my gramps was a south pacific army-air corps scout. they were wonderful lovers, with an over-abundancy of pain. they got changed from what they'd been through.. maybe that's why i feel for pappy so much. those terrible experiences can make loving souls hard and rough. it's hurtful to a kid..but you grow up and have understanding for it, y'know?

  • bwhite53, that's an interesting story that you told; Boyington once made the following quote: "Show me a hero, and I'll prove he's a bum." Something like that, anyhow

  • I meet Pappy Boyington when I was a small boy (10/11?) w/ a friend at an airshow. We had both bought his book, read it, and brought it for an autograph. Son-of-a-bitch refused to sign unless we bought the same book at the airshow for about double the price.

We were devastated. How hard would it have been to keep the smile on 2 little boys faces?

  • and one more thing folks -- this is the show that launched John Larroquette's career.

  • ingaguzman -- cuz the P40 was hopelessly outclassed by the Japanese Zero, except for toughness and diving. F4U Corsair was best we had at the time, fast tough and maneouverable, and those six 50s punched hell out of unarmored Zeros. i still find it amazing that the flying tigers did as good as they did considering what they were up against.

  • You do realize that Greg Boyington DID fly P-40B's with the AVG don't you? He claimed 6 kills, the AVG recognized 4.5

  • yes i do, like i sed, amazing they did as good as they did considering the odds

  • Conrads goin on 74, didnt exactly lead a saintly life, but i CANNOT picture anyone else in this role. and to clarity18, god bless and good luck.

  • His real birth date was in 1930, not 1935. This came out in court records during his criminal DUI trial back in '03. He crashed into another car after leaving a bar.

  • Conrad looks like hell now.

  • They called him Pappy because he was so old... 28. Christ.

  • my dad named me after this guy..... i am joining the air force in february.. coincidence??? LOL maybe. maybe not... we'll see

  • The problem is Hollywood has been producing too many "reality" shows. Don't see the world getting any better. Hollywood is about entertainment. If you want reality, get a life!

  • THE WILD WILD WEST FTW

  • Anybody knows why they used F4-U planes instead of P-40s ??

  • The corsair was the latest airplane in the inventory in the pacific theater at the time. It is far superior to the 40.

  • Like mydyingeyes said it was the newest, but also, it was one of very few aircraft that could out do the Zero, both in speed and manuverability. Light and well armed, it won the pacific.

  • There was one P-40 used in the pilot film where Pappy Boyington stole a P-40 and flew it out of china (he was in fact a member of the flying tigers). USMC NEVER used P-40's Started the War with Brewster Buffalo and Grumman F4F wildcat. The Navy rejected early Corsair because of carrier landing issues, the Marines gladly took them and turned it into a devasting fighter/fighter bomber. Later marks corrected the A/C Stall problems and it became a USN fighter also. Called "whispering death" by Japs

  • Kelly Lange IS SO ANCIENT!!!

  • I want to see the video with Pappy Boyington meating the Jap pilot that shot him down. He knocked his ass out cold! I heard this back in the 70's.

  • That was a myth...its not true(its a great story...but just that, a story) sorry.

  • thank you so much!

  • Great video! I was a child of the seventies and this was one of my favorites.

  • Yeah, Dick Bong had 40 and with a heavier and less maneouvrable plane, the P-38, but perhaps his life, or behaviour wasn't so controversial, making a character not so interesting for Hollywood to sell...

  • Oh, come on, Logo, what's your point? If we take a look at the ace lists, the ones from the Reich have many more killings than ours, that's a truth, in both I and II WW, but FORTUNATELY, that was not enough for them to win!! Anyway, 28 killings make an ace, or not? Greetings from an argentinian...

  • say that in front of me, you fuckin pussy. I'll clock you good.---Flying Tiger Line

  • the best actor in the world..he is very famous in latin america for The Wild wild west ..in spanish the tv show is called Las Aventutas de Jim West....me gusta el show..i like the show...bye from LIMA PERU!!!

  • The feller that played Artamus Gordon , he was the best actor that R. Conrad got to perform with. All those make up discises and all the different made up character voices. I do not know his real name, but thier aint shit in Holliwood with his name on it. He desearved better than that!

  • His name was Ross Martin.

  • 28 kills would have made anyone into an ace, in any army, in any war. It's not very wise to say that Boyington wasn't a good pilot. His score is only one kill short from Hungary's and Italy's best pilots.

  • He is one of my favorite actors, also very famous in France.

I think the sucess of Wild Wild West is due to the perfect team him and Ross Martin made.

  • logoRH, you have an agenda and it stinks to high heaven.

  • 5 kills is an ace, so yes he was an ace and a real person. He was also awarded the congressional medal of honor. So take your wiki and stuff it sideways.

  • read a history book dumbass

and btw wikipedia is not a reliable source

  • He was a great American. A flawed man, but who among us isn't?

Someone mentioned the bio of him by Bruce Gamble- another great book is "Lost Black Sheep" about Chris Magee. He was a real Black Sheep!

  • Grazie per questa intervista!!! Il vero Pappy!!! Great!!!

  • thanks for posting this interview, very rare to see a real interview of Pappy

  • Great vid... Thank you so much for posting this. Couple of rare interviews with one heckuva pilot. Corsair has been my favorite plane due mostly to BBBS & Pappy's book. The greatest generation was from every part of our melting pot and thank God for every one of them.

  • dammit conrad is thick as hell! he would have gotten it deep and hard back then

  • Pappy is stylin!!

  • Great tv show!

  • Read Blacksheep One by Bruce Gamble for a more true to life look at Boyington. The only thing factual about the TV series was that there was a World War II, Boyington fought in World War II, and he commanded VMF-214 and they flew Corsairs. The rest is fiction.

The squadron, VMF-214, didn't consist of misfits. They were mostly young kids, heroes, and it's sad to see them remembered as misfits.

  • Wow, was Jane Pauley always old?!--uh, wait, who was that? :D

  • Kelly Lange? ;D

  • Great Show, I remember watching it growing up. Good Boyington interview too. Great clip!

  • Aaah yes, I'm pretty sure there are plenty out there who had watched BBBS during the 70's. Anyways, I'm glad you enjoyed the interview segment. ;D
