  • those oakway SD60s are amazing machines... i used to see those all the time growing up and before their paint was thrashed. i saw one last week for the first time in about 5 years. there becoming scarce...

  • It was idling most of the time but was in fact used on upgrades by remote control from the cab of 4449

  • was that diesel even on line? sure didn't sound like it!

  • steam engines were great and awsome , but diesles are more comfortable , easyer to maintain , less polutive , and have tons of horsepower.

  • THAT HORN IS BAD ASS !!!!!!! k3has are amazing.

  • bark....oops

  • Never heard the 4449 brak like that, 5 stars

  • That is awesome!

  • Hahaha that BNSF D 9 is even #4449! thats cool

  • WICKED!!!

  • I'm an old retired ATSF Locomotive Engineer. Good looking Lima 4-8-4. 1948 to 1950 I use to operate the Baldwin 2-6-2 and the Baldwin 4-8-4. I've always Steamers should still be used, they tons more power than the Diesels do. Great video of old memories :-)

  • @MrCraig1930 Not really, even a 4-8-4 like the daylight only has a tractive effort of 64,800lbs. Sd60's have a tactive effort 98,250 lbs, so in simple math it would take 4.5 Daylights to pull what these three 60's are doing. Hell Big Boys only have 135,375lb of tractive effort most people think they are in the 200,000 area, and now the new EMD SD70ACe have a tractive effort of 191,000 lbs. Steam is not what it used to be...

  • @potzahasee01 Does it make any difference that the 4449 generates 1,200 more horsepower than an EMD SD70ACE? Does it make any difference that it generates 1,700 more horsepower than an EMDSD60? Speaking of 4-8-4s, the Chesapeake and Ohio 614 used to pull fully loaded 50 car coal trains by itself at 60 MPH!

  • For mechanical horsepower, one horsepower is 33,000 lb.ft./minute = 746 W. Boiler horsepower is, one boiler horse power unit is equal to a boiler thermal output of 33,475 BTU/h , which is the energy rate needed to evaporate 34.5 lb at 212 °F in one hour. Electrical horsepower is the same as mechanical horsepower defined as exactly 746 W.

  • Its like horsepower vs torque, if you want to know what your car can do you look at torque the power that is being put the the ground. You can have a 400Hp motor and still only only put down 200 pound-feet of torque. Its the same as Horsepower and tractive effort, tractive effort is the pulling or pushing capability of the locomotive.

  • @potzahasee01 But like I said, the Chesapeake And Ohio 614 did pull fully loaded 50 car coal trains by itself at 60 MPH! That's like 5,000 tons!

  • @potzahasee01 steam hater..............

  • @844trainman Not true, I have helped with both the 4449 and 700 clubs a few times (paint striping and washing/cleaning, the fun stuff), and right now a little 2ft 0-4-0 a well off gentlemen in the valley just got. But when someone says "they have tons more power than the Diesels do." that's not true anymore, its as simple as that. If I had my way I would be down restoring the 4460 in a heart beat, so don't call me a steam hater.

  • @potzahasee01 realy? your arguing with some one who worked on those engines all his adult life that a single steam loco dosnt have more tractive effort than a single diesle, if so sir, please go do your homework it dont matter that the diesles have more hoarse power, steamers hav more tractive effort which is what realy counts.

  • @844trainman Yup. As I'm sure you'll agree, steamers were made for one-hit runs. The big suckers were designed for special freight runs or high amounts, and the small trains did special orders and passenger services. Again, the large ones responded for passenger service by running express services.

Of course, I may be completely wrong. Either way, these babies were the pride n' joy of their owners, still are probably, and can still pull their weight.

  • Excellent meet there with 4449! Also unique to catch the 4449 in the black paint scheme.

  • Doesn't matter the paint job (red white & blue, Daylight, or black) it's still a beautiful engine.

  • That chuffing starting at 1:00 was outstandingly LOUD!!!

  • Yeah, know that you painted it black, you find a orange unit to put behind it. Good job...

  • Look at her sway as she passes the camera. That means she's working.

  • Great video! Love the big steam sounds and the awesome sound of the whistle at the end as the engine fades away in the distance.
