Youngs Literal Transation.. "20 lo, I have stood at the door,& I knock; if any one may hear my voice, &may open the door, I will come in unto him, &will sup with him,& he with me.

21 He who is overcoming-I will give to him to sit with me in my throne, as I also did overcome & did sit down with my Father in His throne."

I personally would say that th verse could be understood both ways... Jesus definitely is waiting to coming into your heart&life,&into the church!

Jesus isn't knocking on the door of anyone's heart. Rev. 3:20 is about the church.
