  • THis is the Jam right HEre!!!!

  • Joe Bataan the best!!!!!

  • First time I'm hearing this but I loved Joe Bataan from way back. The brother is B-A-D!!!

  • I love this tune. I'm using this for drumming practice. nice little double bass pedal in there. great for doing arm socket farts too if thats your thing..

  • This is a dope song. You cant front on the old school.

  • Come see Joe 9/10/11 at Pt. Fermin Park, San Pedro CA for the 20th Annual Festival of Philippine Arts & Culture. It's a $9 ticket...cheap compared to other venues.

  • damn - just discovered this guy, love it when someone haps along you didn't know and messes your head up and makes you want to search out the catalogue... :)

  • Break beat starts at 2:27 !!!! ^_^

  • @roxtar55 ITS ALL BREAKS! haha

  • This is a very chill song to dance to, regardless if it is or isn't a breaking song.

  • Joe Bataan does not put a foot wrong in my book. Everything this man does is superb.

  • mayer hawthorne resembles his style a lil. thats cool, bringin a old school style back

  • popoppppppppppppppp

  • JESUS!LOOK AT THAT BASS !!!

  • That's a smooth jam.!

  • respect

  • Well, with respects, I'm not making contention about who is "more consistantly soulful than what"; A "Soul Man", or "gal" always has had 'cross-over' appeal from the very beginning (fyi: That "beginning" was 130-yrs. ago when whites first noticed that black cobwoys amd plainsmen were singing what was coined in the 20th-Century, A.D. as "Country Blues"). Whites forwith left the droll banter of Steven Foster and barber shop quartets for this 'negro style' that has evolved since.

  • yo freddyfiddler shut your mouth biyatch u dont know shiiiiit

  • this version is speeded up! like i heard it in a bboy battle! the Original version is slower! peace

  • Hey, after much thought (really, my thoughts are muddy and slow these days,) I realize that Joe's "Call My Name" sounds a lot like Roy Ayers elctronic and zylophone style. Given that this compo was made in 2005, it truly is a "throw-back" to 70s Soul\Fusion Jazz. At this moment Joe Bataan is being interviewed by Felix Hernandez on "the Rhythym Review" radio program(98.7Kiss-FM in NYC) Felix can be heard on Saturdays also on 88.5WBGO-FM between 10am-2pm(EST), and simulcast on wbgo.org.

  • There's a WHOLE lot of retro-Soul being

made today. Maybe you haven't heard of

Daptone Records or Truth & Soul,

two NYC-based record labels that specialize

in NEW classic Soul and Funk music.

made the way it's supposed to be!

    Check it out. Good luck.

    > Professor DLC

  • @DLCOrganization Coming in way late on this disussion, but as far as the whole "retro-soul" thing goes, I'm beginning to grow skeptical. I'm starting to see it as some sort of white revivalist movement (like the ones that spawned Sha Na Na, the Stray Cats, Cherry Poppin' Daddies, etc). The stuff is cool, but it's not advancing the art. Rather, it's a rehash of all that's come before. I'm an ol' skool funkateer and musician, but I know that time doesn't stand still.

  • Then, it's up to US, the originators of this movement

to MAKE time stand still again. How much further can we advance the art, O-Dawg,

when the road ahead leads to a DESTRUCTION of the art?

Certain things are better left unchanged, like orange juice or good sex.

    Can you dig it?

  • Call My Name, Before the setting sun and I'll appear ...and know that I'm the one who will appear. We are gathered here today to remember the departed, have a final say. But don't believe you've seen the last of his face: "I'm only missing, not gone without a trace. The time for me to rise again is near, so..." My lines crossed their streets of gold, that's why they tried to have me buried all those years ago, but my people wouldn't let me die, I keep surviving by the power of their mind."

  • are you forreal? i thought he was black..or an afro-latino

  • He's Afro-Filipino. He even named one of his albums that.

  • me too

  • @JL0vely he is afro latino stupid

  • @1939moreno hes black & pinoy BITCH!

  • @JL0vely look u loser no doubt to know his roots. but he wasnt the pinoy king he was the king of soul. why u people trying so hard to tell the world of his roots when he didnt give a fuck about it............ whyyyy???????????????????/// well you losersss have not much going on in the world thats why..................

  • Comment removed

  • Comment removed

  • @1939moreno Throughout history Pinoys who move to the USA are naturally drawn to Blacks and Latinos because they have the most in common compared to others here. Rather than create more seperation between races and cultures, why not embrace a Pinoy for the mere fact he is drawn to you for sharing the same tastes? Music is supposed to bring people together.

  • @collegeSuxlikeDis he wasnt filipino stupid u wish.???? losers find ur own people who have done nothing...............

  • @1939moreno @1939moreno why don't you myspace Joe himself and tell him what you just said, see how idiotic your comments are. Heres something from his OWN myspace Bio bitch! hope you know how to read...Born to an African-American mother and Filipino father in 1942, Bataan (given name Peter Nitollano) was raised in Spanish Harlem,

its YOU who make your own people look bad. n WTF have you done?

  • This is my shit

  • That's the jam!!! Thanks for an introduction!

  • the track speed on this is not accurate its actually a bit slower.

  • ill track

  • true haha

  • word

  • live music is cool, but this isnt breakbeat

  • well i just accidentally deleted two comments

    : /

but someone pointed out that the break beat starts at 2: 27

so whoever wrote that write it again and you shall get the credit!

    ^_^

  • @runway2007. With all due respect, there is no thing as retro-soul no less than assigning an expiration label to "rock" in all it ranges from maudling standards to brain-splitting cacaphony! There is a certain cultural root than cannot be replicated by corporate initiatives. To make this short, some of the best soul singers today is, of course, ALICIA KEYS and MARY J. BLIGE. Except for artists like R. Kelly's harrassment, the rap\hip-hoppers come up far short. The 'vintage" mode will not work!

  • Well, Atomank, You ARE right, technically, but think about it. The style of music from Alicia Keys and Mary J. are NOWHERE as consistent to that of people like Joe Bataan. The last time we heard anything of a "Soul" nature from Alicia was 2003 when she recorded "You Don't Know My Name", which was even honored with a Reggae remix. The most Soulful album Mary J. ever made was "My Life" from 1994, which most people still consider their top favorite. (BTW, R. Kelly is NOT a Hip-Hop artist.) > DLC
  • @runway2007 @ 2:23 THE BEAT BREAKS, DROPPING ALL MELODIES AND LEAVING A DRUM SOLO. BREAK DANCING IS SOMETHING ELSE.

  • @runway2007 Do you actually have any idea what a breakbeat is? ie before it became a term for a genre of music, which nowadays generally has nothing to do with actual breakbeats...

  • @freddiefiddler is a fag

  • @freddiefiddler u can make it 1 thou

  • @freddiefiddler how do you define breakbeat or breaks? i need a definition if you could please. cheers

  • @freddiefiddler no, it's got a breakbeat on it, it's not the genre of breakbeat

  • @freddiefiddler my man this is original breaks (Dj Ethical Soundrebel) your thinking about electronic breaks (Dj Icey) pz

  • @freddiefiddler - man if you were a bboy or popper you would know this IS a break beat

  • heard that song at a recent jam

  • dope!!!!!!

  • aaaaah sick beat, thx:D

  • what a great record

  • This HAD to be recorded at analog studio. It sounds too WARM not to have been. :-) ANALOG FOREVER!

  • It was - I'm the guitarist on the album. It was recorded at Daptone Studios under the auspices of Gabe Roth of Sharon Jones fames. All analog gear, of course!

  • 'auspices' nothing, you pedantic prick. sounds like you need another project to work on. and yes, this is sped up.

  • cool...

  • sossegar, you da only negative prick on here posting...shut da f*k up iif you ain't got nothin useful to add.

  • Stuff like this is why I love being a musician who can actually play REAL instruments. When it's all said and done, it's all about going back to basics. Listening to this makes me wanna go out and CREATE some music of my own as opposed to saying "Yo', we should sample this" or "Yo, we should do this over." This album song came out only a few years ago, but it sounds like a classic. TRUE music never gets old.

  • Word up my man. Back2basics where its at, synths and sequencers and dj's killed real music.

  • you can shut your mouth too along witth the guy above me

  • Do you not hear the very prominent synthesizer parts in this song? Sequencers aren't always samplers and DJs can provide the very much needed public service of introducing great music, like this, to the masses. Real music is far from dead, but unfortunately so are haters. Check out The Natural Yogurt Band, or The Whitefield Brothers, or Connie Price & The Keystones.

  • @rockorocko BAD music killed real music. It doesn't matter the medium - it's the artist. Should it matter if a visual artists uses paint, clay, or found pieces? Art is art - it's not just how you do it, but it's also what you do with it that counts in the end.

  • shut your mouth

  • Shut our mouths? But we tellin' the TRUTH, so if you can't dig it, you'd best keep steppin'.

  • Ahh...I remember hearing this song for the first time at "Who Came to Serve?" in Chicago. Thanks for putting this up- this is a very rare break beat!

  • this is a song to ride to

  • YYeeeah!!!!

  • Joe has always been a beautiful singer, Please keep hope alive Joe. RIGHT -ON

  • Dope

  • it's BBoy song !

  • Definately a dope BBoy song, but I feel like locking to it right now lol

  • werd!

  • HELL YEAH Joe Battan

  • Joe Bataan is and always will be THE MAN...Long live this brother from the BX.
