Because you'd never get the shuttle launched like that, it would be too heavy. Also, the shuttle cannot physically survive the increased reentry temperatures that a spacecraft undergoes on Moon to Earth re-entry velocities. In short - the shuttle physically can't get to the moon.

I have to apologize - it appears I was somewhat wrong in my last comment. Could a Shuttle with just extra fuel get to the moon? No. But, your questioning prompted me to go and do some snooping, and it appears that the/a Shuttle COULD perform a Moon orbit, BUT, it would require a number of large modifications (such as modifying boosters, fuel tanks, the heat tiles etc) and require a few in orbit items (re-docking with a separate external tank for example).

After that you still have issues like communications, RMS fuel, what you could do there (they wouldn't be able to take a lander with them, so they wouldn't be doing anything an unmanned satellite can't do already) and so on. So it seems, NASA COULD do it if they really wanted to (in theory), but it would take a damn lot of work, a fair amount of risk and would be fairly pointless. Why not just wait until they get the Orion spacecraft up and running and use that?

Shuttle's already designed to keep 5 in comfort for many days. I think you're overestimating the obstacles by a long stretch. It's 2007 now, not 1969 remember.
