Great song! Thin Lizzy best version of course but check out John Norum version which is good too. My buttocks quivered like jely when I first heard this track, by the end of it my nipples had exploded with delight.
just listen to the music, thats all they could ask for. they dont care about popularity of whos the greatest band out of dublin. they just want to please their fans and rock out and have a good time with their fans. all that matter is that you like their music and are fans of thin lizzy for life.
Dude, you get no argument from me brother...when I heard this tune I thought,
Fuckin' wow and they'll never do it live...wrong, there's some versions that are so intense live it's freakin unreal, I started listening to them in 79 so I missed this tour I guess...13 then...!
a great Thin Lizzy song but it does explain the downside of takeing the drug Heroin if you lisen to the words propley. Very simlar that song Goden Brown by The Stranglers both very true powerful songs by both bands it's so sad this was the very thing that killed Philip Lynott just wish that somebody would of got him clean like Scott Goram his guitarist he got off Heroin wish Philip Lynott would of done the same thing at the same time and everything would of been ok. Real shame he died R.I.P.
Phil has to be one of the best front men I think I've ever heard. Not overbearing or never showing off he just flowed lyrically. I don't know how else to describe. I just always pictured him telling a story through his voice with every song. Put on the headphones, close your eyes and just lay back and go somewhere else than where you physically are. I don't get this with a lot of front men but I do with Phil. RIP
@MrNoshies only reason i know, is because i read something with kirk hammett and one of his topics was the guitar solos of this song...can't remember who did what, but he pointed it out..by saying "brian robertsons solo on opium trail" blah blah it was related to wah pedal use
@MrNoshies Robbo was on this album , he was and is still going through an drink problem. He busted up his hand during the recording, and Phil had enought of his behaviour and fired him. He is on all the tracks on this album and did the tour but after that he was gone, Brian was a wonderful guy sober, but this all went to his head, He was 17 when he joined Lizzy .
@prsfrank Sorry, Robbo did not play on every song - only 2 or 3. Scott recorded most of the parts before Robertson joined them in Canada. Robbo played both solos on this song though. Anyone who knows their style and tone knows it's Robertson, especially the wah solo at the end. He also does the solo on Killer Without a Cause" - another great song. I thought this record was a little dissappointing when it came out. I only wanted to hear kickass rockers, not ballads, LOL.
Not the best version of this song ever !, its great but listen to the live version from Philly, live killers ep, absolutely the greatest power riff and solos to die for by the greatest live band ever
yes. Heroin is derived from the opium poppy. Unfortunately Phil was addicted to this. This song is the story of the descent into that addiction; as well as the quasi mystical fascination that he as an artist had with this drug; and the euphoric world whose doors the drug opened for him.
This is great! were so lucky to have this music. rocknroll saves my soul on a daily basis! I would humbly accept any musical contribution this band gave us, the lucky few. as they say in the islands, it's all good.
Bad Reputation may actually be their best album - better than Jailbreak and Johnny the Fox. However, in my opinion, they were at their peak during this period so take your pick along with Live and Dangerous (perhaps, THE BEST live album ever).
Black Rose and Chinatown are also good, but the drugs must have taken over by Renegade. I have always wondered if this song represented the beginning of Phil's heroin usage.
As far as I know, Phil started heroin while recording Black Rose in Paris in '79, but this song was inspired by a documentary Phil saw on tv about the passage of opium from the far east, so it at least represents the beginning of his interest in the drug.
So sad how his life turned, and its all right there in his tunes, people probably didn't realise how much truth was in his lyrics until it was too late.
Philip Parris Lynott was born to be a rock god, and he always will be.......R.I.P
It sounds like Gorham and Lynott both had a problem and agreed to split in order to clean up. Gorham followed through, but Phil spun out of control.
The videos of Phil from 83 through 85 tell the story. He aged rapidly and looked bloated as all hell. Anyone can see something wasn't right by 85.
The break up of Lizzy, failure of Grand Slam and his wife and daughters leaving accelerated his downward decline. No one intervened until it was too late.
Personally, I think Thin Lizzy continued to get better and hit their peak in 76-78. You can argue which album from Jailbreak to Live and Dangerous was best. I think they hit their stride with Jailbreak and their next 2 studio albums were better, L&D is the best live album ever.
Black Rose is good and so is Chinatown, but they were clearly sliding down at that point.
You will note that I said MAY have been. Lizzy was at their peak with Robbo so take your pick. Gary, Snowy and Sykes were great guitarists, but Lizzy was at its best with Robbo.
I am an American and I agree that Thin Lizzy is the most underrated band in rock history. It is their record company's fault. There was no support after Jailbreak.
Live and Dangerous was HUGE on my college campus in 78-79, but apparently it did not sell that well in America.
spiralling is a great word for this song..."the wizard wonders through the world he made from dreams..." i feel like i'm flying through some kind of vortex when i'm listening to this great great song!!
the absolute ,most versitile band there was at the time, ...sad thing is most people from that time period were never even aware of these songs ...too afraid to stray from the mainstream..well all I can say is they missed out big time
If you think this is good - check out the LIVE Opium Trail from the Live an Dangerous Tour. Mysteriously it was left off the album but its out there somewhere. I think it came out on 'Live Killers' durin the Snowy White era. By far the best track ever put down by Lizzy.
Long live Pippin the friendly ranger at Clontarff Castle!!
Oh an while I'm on...does anyone know where Dino's bar and Grill is? I was told by a roadie once it was on Whitworth Street in Manchester (now a car park - I have a shot of the exact spot if anyone wants to see). However I've also seen it mentioned in a book that it was in LA someplace. I'd like to think the author is wrong but hey I still like to think it's here in MADchester! Anyone got a clue???
Is Bad reputation one of the most underrated albums or what? When it came to dope they new what they were talking about, thats why opium wars is so intense. All of the tracks on this record are brilliant. All of it. Like a final breath before going deep 6 it was "Lizzys" swan song.
@getmetwobeers I grew up listening to this band. Most young people today have no idea who this band is which is a shameI hope to one day see Phil and the rest of the band be given their due,amd to be inducted in the rock n roll hall of fame.
by far the best solo of brian robertsons career he was way underrated as a guitarist he had a killer tone and great phrasing with a wah wha pedal awesome

@wegreenall This song is incredibly badass. I love this album. They needed to put out Bad Reputation II. The solos are so amazing and perfect. Dancing in the Moonlight always really impressed because the solo had an awesome section around 2:20.
