lol ABLYING WHY DONT YOU JUST SAY IT STRAIGTH FORWARD what is wrong you dont aggree ? you should not do such thing you should be neutral you think people here were born yesterday? AB=-Highest not all here are kids watch out ?
I don't realy like their ideals but the Spartans have one my respect.funny how they say gays can't be in the military the Spartan soldiers were mostly bi or gay.
@TheBAGman17 how do you know that? you slept with one?
to say they were bi or gay is just the way of today's western civilizacion of putting a name to it... for greeks there was no such thing... they would just like or unlike someone... not by sex
@alahad don't start getting this complicated yes we put a name to it allows us us to know what the other person is talking about. The Spartans practiced it the most because they were stuck in barracks surrounded by men every day since they were young thats what i meant hell the Greeks even noticed it and used terms like the "Spartan way" when reffering to things of that nature.
@TheBAGman17 im sorry i had to put it out... to hear that someone says greeks where gay or bi sounds to me rather ignorant (not calling you one in any way) I just don't like it at all...
@alahad how is it ignorant I know what im talking about it clearly stated in history and i never implied it was a bad thing either. whether you like it or not thats how it was. When I was talking about there ideals i meant the spartans owning of slaves and their 'other' taste in partnership.not the gay thing
@TheBAGman17 to say they were gay is like saying they were people with no culture since they would use sandals all the time... that's the paris hilton way to see THEIR ideology... gay and bi are therms that didn't even exist at that time, people were just people who liked other people... what are you like 12?
@alahad I don't get what on Earth you are trying to say how does saying someone is gay strip them of everything else of their culture. No they didn't exist back then but you know what they exsist now and I am damn well going to use them I cant possibly see how you could twist such a simple coment to make me sound like a gay hating idiot who doesn't know shit about history. Its not an ideology does it mean a male wasn't a male till he could tell he was different from his mom?Its called ignorance.
@alahad Just because someone doesn't use the word don't mean it doesn't exist and Plato and other famous scholars of that time called it "unnatural" though not evil or wrong, so yes It would be used even back then.Next time you insult someones intelegence try to know what the hell your talking about.I tried being nice but if your going to call me a 12 year old just cause im saying shit you don't want to hear then fuck it.The Greeks were gay PEDOPHILES.
@TheBAGman17 I didn't call you a 12 year old... I asked because of your HORRIBLE grammar, also I didn't insult your intelligence I said (not calling you one in any way) I wasn't calling you an ignorant plus ingorance is not lack of intelligence I hope you can tell the difference.
I only said the term seems to me missused for the context... you know what "context" means right? Since im not fighting with you I think this converstion is over don't bother replying Im not even reading it...
@alahad you realy could have made that 12 year old thing a little more clear its comonly used as an insult in comments. well in that case im sorry for the misunderstanding.whether you reply or not my conscience won't let things like this go.so I HAVE to reply and yes I know I have bad grammer.bye
@TheBAGman17 I'm afraid you are confusing them with the thebans, city state of Thebes. Sacred band of Thebes was a shock troop of 300 homosexuals, 150 couples. Regardless, homosexuality was NOT regarded as evil or a social stigma back in those days, greeks were more open minded and less prejudicial than today's society.
@Zamolxes77 No it was the Spartans im talking about. They were stuck in barracks sorrounded by only men for very long periods of their life since they were young aka easily influnced and when puberty hit they weren't left with many options.I can't even tell which of the many comments I left your responding to so ill just say I have no problem with gay people and don't regard it as evil . I regard the god who said it was evil an asshole, but thats a completley different subject.
Lol persia at the time was a multicultural melting pot, a civilization accomondating and advanced. The spartan one, on the contrary is a draconian slavary state. So much for "Fighting for freedom"
what I think is ''funny'' is any persian soldier thinking ''man... we had BIG problem breaking 300, what will it look like when we will be at sparta walls?" hehe
Only a fool would believe 300 Spartans killed 10,000 Persians. The only truth to this battle is that the Greeks lost it within two days. Yes, the Greeks were better armored hence they took fewer casualties. Xerxes marched on to Athens and burnt it before he returned to Persia. What one needs to understand is that Xerxes attacked Greece in retaliation to the Greeks burning Greek cities that were under the protection of the Persian Empire.
@mehrdadaryamehr Before u speak think before you say something so stupid.the numbers of 300 Spartans and the 10.000 Persians and the Greek Victory untill the betrayal of Efialtes is historical evidence since it is not only justified by the Greek side but also from the Iran side(ancient Persians).Read more i suggest.
250k persians? I heard from some sources that Xerxes had gathered an army of well over 2,000,000. Maybe he only sent 250,000 to Thermopylae ... idk. Either way its insane how the spartans held them off. I wish i could have seen what it was like, porbly even more epic than the movie 300.
@NexusDoug it is pretty much impossible to gather 2 millions peps at one spot for that long. it would dry out rivers, and food would be too inexistent for the troops.
of course, I am talking about a campaign, camp site would be too difficult to manage for so long. so, 250 000 would be more plausible.
@oly355 even 250k is too much. The number is wildly debated, but by some modern scholars estimates, the logistics of fielding an army over 50k increase exponentially. Xerxes was a very good leader also a very organized king, lets assume he did better than most, so a 80 to 100 k is a number closer to reality. Check wikipedia on subject, pretty good article.
That said, why is it that media outlets like the Historical Channel insists on showing crap like "UFO's" or "Bigfoot" or "Bermuda Triangle" bs when they
present themselves as being "historical". Apparently they are not any thing but historical. I have the highest regard for historians. If you do not know where you came from, you will absolutely have no idea where you will go.
Never the less, I would like to offer some suggestions about productions that relate to historical matters. Always show pics and maps of the actual places that are being discussed. This is important. And I don't mean general pics. I mean precise pics as best as can be determined. This is important as it gives a person of this era a connection to the past.
But mainly I do not envy Persia because Xerxes was like Caligua. A freaking madman. Who whips the sea and tries to make a bridge from Persia to Greece? He's an Idiot!
But basically, it all ended for him (I am not saying he was killed) at Platea where the Persians were beaten and defeated. Like Darius, they had been told to fuck off.
It would have been interesting to see what would have happened if The Spartans had in place along the tops of the Hot Gates hillsides, well trained Spartans archers when the battle began.
@0iMySize A recently translated record of the naval battle of Salamis (a burned scroll recovered from Pompeii, and only now could it be read using MRI) has the greeks outnumbered 2 to 1. That differs from the usual story of outnumbered 6 to 1. That gives us a sense of how uncertain the ancients were of their history.
This is why I'm as much into history as I am. The great last stands, the rallying of men in support for an ideal, the great battles and the men behind them, it's all too exhilerating for me to not show some interest in it.
its a shame!! today what remains of these 2 great empires?? Iran is literally f*cked up and governed by Islamic fanatics !! Greece is on the merge of bankruptcy !!
I wonder why today people dont rise up the same way against today's every day wars such as poverty, injustice and protecting the environment. Spartans achieved their greatness by being disciplined and united, a great historic lesson. Why can't we do the same, even when we know our own home and safety are at risk?
question is, if the Greeks are telling truth about their humiliating defeats, why they never rise again?
Talking about a city civilization compared to the only Country Civilization? Fact is Greeks lost the war and west trying to exaggerate their civilization and then claim their heritage.
Greeks for last 2500 years never raised a civilization of own but colony of Persians, Romans, and Ottomans.
@Shirio77 don't speak for Greece again.people laugh with you.if we never exist all Europe would be Persian now.where are you from?and where your people were in those days?nobody can fight like Greeks.and persians without Efialtis probably would lose the battle from only 300 Greeks Spartans.GREECE IS YOUR MOTHER.read history more because you don;t know very well ok?
@Shirio77 Pay some respect to the Land that gave the light of civiization. If it wasnt for Greeks your mother would be a monkey on a tree.Or is she????????
dude.....those spartans would've killed like 50k persians if they didnt have arrows man.... they still had like 200 men until the persians decided to use arrows.....
absolute amazing, My theory why the spartans where so strong and even stood a chance against that big of troops is because they trained their whole life not for just be pepared for battles, but to fight as brothers.. and thats why i think what made them so strong because they tought of each other like brothers!
not like the other army did who just pick every fightable soldier they can find and put him in the army
The whole scenario of what happened in this battle is totally from the Greek pespective which may have been very biased to bring out the bravery of their own troops. The historians have no record from the Persian side. The Greeks could say whatever they wanted to and no one would argue with them. Who knows if the Greeks were really outnumbered. The thin wicker shields that the Persians used is pure nonsense. The Greeks could say whatever they wanted and get away with it.
The fact is when Arabs conquered Persia, they burnt all the libraries of Persian empire on the command of Omar the khalifa of Muslims at that time. Because he believed that everything a man need in this life is in Quran (holy book of Muslims) and all other books are blasphemic. So there is huge lack of historical evidence regarding Persian ancient history in all aspects not to mention about Greco-Persians wars.
Actually you do have a point. I am disappointed in History Channel, they could have done an actual Reenactment like they normally do. Its actually really quite rediculous- the whole simulation thing.
this is just a simulation yea... but why the hell do they simulate so wrong ? for example the models of the persians looks like abrabians... and the persians fight only with swards ? its like 300 lol... why arent the details true.. ? all warriors fight with speers in that age... swards has TOO short range
memitsas your stupid cuz what u fight for cannot be compared to what the spartans faught for. you are fighting for a country that will betray its own men, ( blow up their own towers ) just for greed so they can go get oil and cause chaos in the middle east. your just a goof buddy i wish you were here right now so i could full mount you then arm bar you , you fucking clown
WOW those Spartans were real persistent warriors. I respect them for that and I'm a Persian myself. But I am wondering how would they have performed if they wanted to attack instead of defending. I think their tight deployment would have made them much more entangled and slow on the offense. But maybe i'm wrong:)
if they battleled, they prefered to wait for the enemy to charge them, but if tehy had to attack, they advanced still in phalanax formation and tried the slaughter the enemy flanching them.Cavalry could do some damage, but thanks to their spears the hoplites could survive ,however hoplits weren't the only greec type unit.Almost no history general was so stupid to deploy many hoplites when they want to attack instead of protecting. this is part 2 the comment was to long
they wouldnt have been backstabbed, but theyd still be probably be getting exhausted, and would probably lose, unless someone would come and reinforce them
spartans were trainning from 7 years old. all the day from morning to night...every day. and they will get tired when they must fight? never. spartans never lost because they were tired. they should have win if efialtis didnt betrayed.,
question is, if the Greeks are telling truth about their humiliating defeats, why they never rise again?
Talking about a city civilization compared to the only Country Civilization? Fact is Greeks lost the war and west trying to exaggerate their civilization and then claim their heritage.

I like how the History Channel's version of history has the Persian scout wearing a turban, as though he is a "muslim" Hahahahahahahahaha!
Unfortunately the History channel is nothing more than a fictional comedy of actual history.
The uneducated jealous jews that work there get their facts from fictional Holyjude movies and video games like the old 80's version of Prince of Persia and use it to come up with their version of fictional history along with fictional costumes, maps etc.
this isnt even the history channel! Ive seen the 300 documentery and sure has hell didnt have A VIDEO GAME IN IT. And they had a sea battle during the battle of thermopylea not 1 year after! this guy speaks from his ass...
This definitely is the History Channel. And the Naval Battle he spoke of actually did happen and destroyed the Persian supply lines a year later. Perhaps you should try talking out of your ass, it's apparently more intelligible than you.
you idiot after 500 AC the byzantine empire lose her roman character and latins disapear from byzantine empire and the byzantine empire becomes greek byzantine empires the emperors are greeks and no romans the last roman emperor of byzantine empire is ioustinianos .
"had the spartan not done their bit..." Thermopylae is widely recognized by the historical community as a strategic failure that really only affected the greek effort in the same way that the alamo did the texans. The persians did not "race" to athens, they weren't in a hurry. The Athenians would have been long gone anyway! Persia wreaked havoc on the greeks until the athenian navy won superiority, forcing persia to withdrawl or risk being cut off in greece away from support.
This is not Rome Total War - well, it is and it isn't... This is the History Channel show Decisive Battles, which signed a deal with Creative Assembly to use the engine to reproduce battles. Rome Total War wasn't released for several months after the show aired.
You guys want some cheap laughs? Check out the comments for the 300 trailer, two guys have been arguing on it for the past two MONTHS, slinging around some very creative racial slurs. :/
If any of you ignorant people who seem to believe 300 was historically accurate actually want to learn something, then read the original sources - get hold of HERODOTUS and find out how it really went down at the time. Then you would know how much of 300 was made up.
you`re right. And considering that Herodotus was born arount the time, when this battle happened he nerver saw the real event. I think much of ancient greek history is very unreliable, because there are not many sources and the people who wrote about historical events of that time were often born decades or even hundreds of years after it. One has to wonder if myths and legends that never happened were often transformed into history. I'm not trying to offend people here, so spare me your hate.
the greek historians like herodotus were respected for their gathering skills - gathering information from many sources, to include persian sources in this case. But your point is not well taken considering that very few historians were actually present at the moment of history they report on.
That quote was from Thucydides, who said this was a saying of the women to their men before battle, and would never be repeated by the men as it was a tradition of the women.
im persian, i live in UK, my best frieands are greeks, we have much more in common than english. I think its just propaganda trying to bring hate among people. thats how they make their billions and live rich. we have to be smart and dont let any one abuse our nationalistic feelings.
greeks and Iranians (persia no longer exists get over it) have a lot in common, they're both two meaningless countries whose people have their heads stuck up their asses about what they did thousands of years ago.
Some of them act really arrogant like their cultures are superior to all others. Well greeks should remember they got their asses to them by first the Arabs, then the Turks causing them to lost Constantinople
Iranians should remember the HUGE ass-whooping Mongols gave them.
You should remember that culture of those two nations still lives and stands as memory while oldest thing in your country is around 100 years old. My granma is older than your country.
Are you talking about America? that is far older than 100 years old??? In "my" country. we don't stand on the history of events from a single culture in one landmass, we draw from every culture in the world representing every inch of the world. To hate all Americans is to hate yourself.
I wasnt saying about your country but about buildings of culture, national treasures in it which are ridicilously young compared to some others. I dont hate Americans just their stupid politics and such a shallow way of the thinking they are the best thing on the face of the world. Actually I have american friends and they all display same way of thinking which is not the reason to hate them but is little annoying so we avoid topics such as politics etc.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
have to wonder what xerxes what thinking engages the greeks on a narrow mountain pass that totally negated his large numerical superiority. Dumb ass move.
Also why the hell didn't he bring any cavalry to take out the phalanx, instead of wasting a whole day's worth of infantry sending light-armored ill-equipped swordsman against well-armed armored spartan phalanx.
The Mongols would have eaten Spartans for lunch, knowing where and how to fight decides battles equally as courage
The Mongols were successful due to their excessively superior horsemanship and archery skills, both of which the spartans lacked. Mongolians soldiers could cover distances faster than any other army prior to the 20th century.
They would pick apart the Spartan phalanx within minutes. The Mongols were poor swordsman compared to Europeans, yet they still dominated every European force and were only defeated by the Egyptians when they emulated Mongol war tactics
The immortals weren't so immortal when they met the spartans.

question is, if the Greeks are telling truth about their humiliating defeats, why they never rise again?
Talking about a city civilization compared to the only Country Civilization? Fact is Greeks lost the war and west trying to exaggerate their civilization and then claim their heritage.
Greeks for last 2500 years never raised a civilization of own but colony of Persians, Romans, and Ottomans.
Falsifying history won't help.

@Shirio77 Actually if anything the jews and the rest of the jealous world downplay the greeks.

absolute amazing, My theory why the spartans where so strong and even stood a chance against that big of troops is because they trained their whole life not for just be pepared for battles, but to fight as brothers.. and thats why i think what made them so strong because they tought of each other like brothers!
not like the other army did who just pick every fightable soldier they can find and put him in the army

The Greeks could say whatever they wanted and get away with it.
d1jason1 1 year ago
@d1jason1
What about the Persians who never wrote down anything about it because it was a whole black history for them in Greece?
DomoProductions 1 year ago

WOW those Spartans were real persistent warriors. I respect them for that and I'm a Persian myself. But I am wondering how would they have performed if they wanted to attack instead of defending. I think their tight deployment would have made them much more entangled and slow on the offense. But maybe i'm wrong:)
eelakh 2 years ago
if they battleled, they prefered to wait for the enemy to charge them, but if tehy had to attack, they advanced still in phalanax formation and tried the slaughter the enemy flanching them.Cavalry could do some damage, but thanks to their spears the hoplites could survive ,however hoplits weren't the only greec type unit.Almost no history general was so stupid to deploy many hoplites when they want to attack instead of protecting. this is part 2 the comment was to long

Plus a big - for using a historically very inaccurate game.
EmperorLjas 2 years ago
If any of you ignorant people who seem to believe 300 was historically accurate actually want to learn something, then read the original sources - get hold of HERODOTUS and find out how it really went down at the time. Then you would know how much of 300 was made up.
neithhotep 2 years ago
you`re right. I'm not trying to offend people here, so spare me your hate.
fischkopp1234 2 years ago
the greek historians like herodotus were respected for their gathering skills - gathering information from many sources, to include persian sources in this case. But your point is not well taken considering that very few historians were actually present at the moment of history they report on.

They left one thing out-
Before Xerxes ordered the mas arrow attack he offered the Spartans a trade. Their lives for the body of Leonidas. To the they replied,
"A Spartan leaves the battlefield with his shield, or upon it"
seahwkfan2233123 2 years ago 2
That quote was from Thucydides, who said this was a saying of the women to their men before battle, and would never be repeated by the men as it was a tradition of the women.

greeks and Iranians (persia no longer exists get over it) have a lot in common, they're both two meaningless countries whose people have their heads stuck up their asses about what they did thousands of years ago.
Some of them act really arrogant like their cultures are superior to all others. Well greeks should remember they got their asses to them by first the Arabs, then the Turks causing them to lost Constantinople
Iranians should remember the HUGE ass-whooping Mongols gave them.
tremills997 2 years ago
You should remember that culture of those two nations still lives and stands as memory while oldest thing in your country is around 100 years old. My granma is older than your country.
azamemnius 2 years ago 3
Are you talking about America? that is far older than 100 years old??? In "my" country. we don't stand on the history of events from a single culture in one landmass, we draw from every culture in the world representing every inch of the world. To hate all Americans is to hate yourself.
68W2M072 2 years ago
I wasnt saying about your country but about buildings of culture, national treasures in it which are ridicilously young compared to some others. I dont hate Americans just their stupid politics and such a shallow way of the thinking they are the best thing on the face of the world. Actually I have american friends and they all display same way of thinking which is not the reason to hate them but is little annoying so we avoid topics such as politics etc.

have to wonder what xerxes what thinking engages the greeks on a narrow mountain pass that totally negated his large numerical superiority.
