  • Does anybody know whether or not this was live?

  • That's raw.Perhaps that's why music is loved and came into existence ...

I'm 20 years old...I say "fuck you" to today's mainstream music...!!!

  • If music slowly turned back to this general form. I'd be ok with that.

  • they're singin it too fast

  • @monk22yrs aw c'mon

  • @SyberkaPL they sing it fast the way singers do their old songs as an intro to a melody of their greatest hits.

i can't find a version of this on youtube that i remember, though chet atkins playing this on steel guitar is kinda interesting.

  • @monk22yrs No, you're listening too slow

  • @monk22yrs no, they're actually not.

  • Today I fell in love with the Mills Brothers. Life is a little sweeter.

  • THIS GLOW WORM LIT UP MY LIFE TODAY :)

  • Double treat. The Mills Brothers on the Nat King Cole Show. Wow.

  • jak ja lubie takie klimaty :)

  • Hey there "SyberKaPL": Just want to say 'Thank You' for your posts here of the late but ever great Mills Brothers! I was just a little kid when I first heard them and they had a profound impact on my life. It was something like 1969 or 1970 or so and Count Basie and his orchestra and the Mills Brothers were playing at are small town's (New Kensington) newly renovated Holiday Inn. My parents (who were 50 yrs old when they had me) let me go into the ballroom to see and listen. I was hooked 4 life!

  • @swt1a1 You're welcome. That's a nice story. The Mills Bros. are great. I don't have to say it.

  • @swt1a1 Thanks so much for this Mills Bros stuff. It is lighting up my evening.Real Class Act!

  • "was it something that I said a thousand years before my time"?

what song is these lyrics from?

Starts out - Well it's pouring down with rain,---- also she makes a wave to float my boat upon? anyone know?

  • 7 people apparently are deaf.

  • This was HOT! Ive listening to the Frankie Lymon version of it. Ray Charles & Dean Martin have done it as well. The song itself is just hot!!

  • @caramkalb Guess what cara...the Mills Brothers are much more famous than Cherie Currie!!!! The world didn't begin in 1974 y'know!!!!! Don't be too shocked that a world-famous #1 song can be found on youtube!

  • holy cow i cant believe this is on youtube! im reading Neon Angels by Cherie Currie and i she made a reference to this song so i had to look it up. thanks for making it available!

  • Love them !!!

  • excellent, where is the looping button?

  • I know that death is the most beautiful part of life but... it just takes REAL talent from the world!

  • @Mrkilerperson :( so true

  • 1:57 video: Mills Brothers singing their 1952 #1 hit Glow Worm; live from Nat King Cole Show, 1957.

April 2, 1912: birth of Herbert Mills, American tenor/singer (The Mills Brothers) (d. 1989)

  • I LOVE THIS SONG.

Amazing it's over 100 years old and still so awesome and popular.

'The Glow Worm' is actually a British music-hall song, from 1902.

  • Norman Brown is a beast on guitar do anyone know where i can find more info on him

  • I love the lyrics.

  • I LOVE how happy the lead singer is singing this song. I mean, I love the song plain and simple, but seeing him loving it makes it THAT much better.

  • The happiest song ever. I used to have a cassette tape of the Mills Bros and every day when I left work I played Glow Worm as I drove down the freeway. Singing along of course. Great way to unwind.

  • Absolutely brilliant - finding gems like this makes trawling through YouTube worthwhile.

I love finding clips of live performances that are just about perfect in every way, by performers who are way ahead of the pack, and this, along with their 'Yellow Bird', is right up there. So far I've also found Jacques Brel 'Amsterdam', Dusty Springfield 'I Don't Want To Go On Without You', Pussycat 'My Broken Souvenirs', and Bobby Darin singing just about anything. Anyone got any other suggestions?

  • Top entertainers !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Glow Worm??? Maybe they are referring to the night crawlersin the ground near the Hanford Nuclear Reservation.

  • they're really loving what they do........miss them.

  • they have given so much joy over many years it is nice to see they enjoy their singing too

  • In preparation for this great performance, Nat Cole's crew spent a whole week reinforcing the stage foundation.

  • 6 people hate little glow worms :c

  • @dropsThings or missed the "love" button

  • This looks and sounds good and stands the test of time. Isn't it wonderful how the joy of this music lives on each time we enjoy it? The Mills Brothers, what a class act.

  • What could one possibly DISLIKE about this clip, except, perhaps, that the sound and picture quality are up to modern standards?

  • DS9 - Far Beyond the Stars. Great episode.

  • Great group, boy could they harmonize! Danced many mile to their songs. Also play many a tune on the accordion. Talk about memories! Giovanni Maria Tommaso

  • what a great group always makes me smile i wish time was a loop so i could be alive and lisen to music like this being 16 sucks :P rap and hiphop are all kids lisen to now but not me :D

  • FANTASTIC!!!!!!

  • the house music pissed me off this is the real music ...good joob

  • He was Bing and Dean's inspiration....

  • Can anyone identify the three gentleman( besides being the Mills Brothers!)?

  • @taubs3 Yes I can. From left to right, they are Herbert, Donald and Harry.

  • @taubs3 L to R Herbert, Donald and Harry Mills. Accompanist is, I think, Norman Brown.

  • Just pure talent. No one today can hold a candle to them. Notice no screaming above loud background music or pyrotechnics to prop them up.

  • They are having so much fun. What a great sound they have together!

  • Absolutely fantastic music by a great group. Does anyone have any video of the Mills brothers singing San Antonio Rose? And by the way Lucy is absolutely bush league compared to the Mills brothers.

  • oldies is forever...

  • Such wonderful voices, great harmonies! The don't come any better than that!

And Johnny Mercer's new lyrics turned a sweet turn-of-the-Century (1903) German ballad into a swinging American jazz standard.

  • Lucy does it better. haha

  • What a classy act they were.

Thanks for sharing this with the world.

  • @adjam5 haha yeah they were a, class act, haha old people

  • Thanks, SyberkaPL. Wish these guys were still around. :)

  • wonderful vocal rhythm johnny mercer is true class and these guys are just a joy to behold :-)

  • I know these men personaly and attended many live show's from front row seats and dinners after and they not only sang like angels they were the nicest most down to earth people i ever have had the pleasure to share my life with and i will miss them very much. God Bless you all

  • I like Lucy Ricardo's version of Glow Worm better :p

  • encore!

  • U hav no idea how much I Love these Guys! Prototypes...my mother put their records on for me and it was on these Knights that i slept in Joy and had the deepest dreams....

  • I love this song cause ...they really make it swing baby! Another one I really like is Opus I (one). I can't say I have a favorite of theirs cause I love many of them for different reasons. Cab Driver, Paper doll, Up a Lazy River, Dinah!

  • Lot of swinging beef on the hoof there.

  • very very cool. It makes me fricken glow!

  • Thanks for posting this! my grandmother used to sing the chorus for this as long as i could remember (probably 25 years ago) I just now decided to look it up!!!

  • His Smile makes me smile :-)

    Love this song!!

  • @kungura YEAH! and YOUR comment made ME smile :-) He was a cutie!!

  • I must have seen this fifty times today.

  • Gosh! They were so smooth!

  • haha woaw! its a nice song! yeaH! its really adictive even though the song is too old already^_^

  • Right song married to the right artist=a lifetime's experience.

  • Always have loved this song, since 1952. My favorite of theirs without question, this song makes me smile, even when I'm upset. I was quite young, but old enough to appreciate their music along with all the other great harmonizing groups of the 50s. I wish this music would come back but.....I don't think so, at least not in my lifetime. But with videos like this, we have the memories that will never die.

  • One of my all-time favorites and groups. I had this on a 45 record when I was a kid.

  • This brings back great memories . . . my brother and I learned to harmonize listening to the Mills Brothers when we were little kids.

  • I couldn't agree more, myself, and I'm 16.

  • All music should be made like this, with a beat. Great music

  • Sadly music today is barely deserving of the name....no one can touch the harmonies of the Mills bros

  • can we say CHOOOOOOOON??????????

  • those cats were so cool the lyrics are very interesting

  • Those were the days!! adjam5-I agree!

  • this song sounds a lot better preformed by these guys than by lucy and her saxophone on I love Lucy.

  • i love Swing Music

  • I wish music was made like this today. These guys are way before my time(I'm 45) and their music is timeless.

Thank you for posting this vid.

  • i couldnt agree more..and im 22

  • This song is addictive...

  • @m9mdc stuck in my head for days on end...not a bad song to get stuck though ;)

  • Mills brothers are really wonderful.....having a great time singing!

  • These guys are having FUN!

  • Everyone is always very surprised when they find out that my favorite thing to listen to is the Mills Brothers. But i love them, and "when he's gone" is my favorite song from them, but this one was rather enjoyable as well. Keep them alive guys!

    ~Baby

  • Thank You very much for nice comments.

  • I disagree with the "dull and grey" comment. This was, very EARLY television. In person, they would have appeared very 'stylish'. I especially like Harry's "half-rim" glasses (the latest thing). Black groups such as the Mills Bros. reallized they were representing more than just themselves, so they always looked their Very Very Best. Incidentally, the key change from D-Flat to D is alot of fun also.

  • This was cleared up earlier, but MAZDA is the incandescent bulb brand, like KLEENEX facial tissue. or Band-Aid. Mazda in the early 20th century basically meant 'light bulb'. Or so wanted the General Electric Co. for everyone to believe. If you listen carefully, the Mills Bros are pronouncing that word precisely correctly. The fun part of this song is they start out in 4 part harmony, at least it sounds like it. hard to do LIVE.

  • I would have never heard the Mills Brothers if it weren't for the records my grandparents left behind for me. I am 25 and whenever I am in a gloomy mood I just set the needle to this one and I start smiling. Music has that effect on me. I just love the Harmony of the Mills Brothers and the crackle of an old record. "Rock On"

  • This was my first favorite song..I was maybe 4 at the time. I remember seeing them on TV lookin' just like this.

  • pure class

  • Saw them live in Vegas in the 1970's and they were great!

  • fantastic! I knew this from an album my dad had when I was a kid -- I must have heard it a thousand times, but I've never seen them do it. they are just so fantastically cool - thanks for posting!

  • such classy men.

  • Mazda was a trademarked name used by General Electric and others for incandescent light bulbs from 1909 through 1945; Mazda brand light bulbs were made for decades after 1945 outside the USA. So a vest pocket mazda is basically a torch.

  • Thank you so very much for giving this explanation. Unless you lived in that time period or knew someone who did and mentored you. You hadn't a clue what they were talking about. This was a time period where it was also so chick, hip, and cool to smoke. Break out your Chesterfield, Fatimas.... Thank you Joe Friday....Thank you for the explanation! I'm 44 y/o and those lyrics have been puzzling me for ever.

  • LOVE the Mills Brothers!

  • THANK YOU, YOUTUBE!!! So many gems that could be lost on future generations. I'm seeing and hearing stuff here I never would have had the chance to see. Even if you were around then, if you didn't happen to be watching Nat King Cole's show or whatever you'd have missed this...so GREAT to have this resource for older film, tv, music. :D

  • I SOOOO agree!......I'm addicted to youtube......and I can't get enough of the Mills Brothers.....please keep 'em coming because I don't have any of my own to post.......I watch them over and over.......I wonder how many others there are just like me......lost in a time warp?

  • my late dad used to like this. Happy memories.Love it. Babs.

  • Watching this clip is worth what I paid for my computer!

  • Ahw man I know what you mean.

  • fabulous!

  • Could music be any better than this?

  • Damn, I wish i could sing like that

  • electric! just electric!

  • Great Johnny Mercer lyrics........"into yon woods primeval" "tailight neon".

The Mills Brothers guys really make his words........glow.

  • I thought these lyrics were translated from German.

  • Allbob,

You are correct that the song is originally from Germany.

I don't know the German lyrics so I can't say if the words are a direct translation, but I would doubt it for two reasons.

    1) A direct translation wouldn't rhyme and fit the meter so perfectly.

    2) Johnny Mercer was a first class lyricist. He may have liked the original premise and just took it from there.

So, like "Mack the Knife" the original is German, the English version is uniquely the work of a American lyricist

  • Yeah - the chorus is pretty much a direct translation and Mercer filled in the verses.

  • i love how these guys look like bank managers. a bit grey and dull. imagine a 'boy band' being allowed to lok like this these days....

  • Right? They're dressed so sharp and they look nice. Compared to how bands dress to day it's...drastic, I guess is the word.

  • They could sure sing. Thanks for this.

  • Excellent!!

  • Just PURE G E N I U S and so much damn fun!!!! Great great post...many many THANKS!!!!!

    Wayne in Texas.

  • These guys were fantastic. What great harmonizers and just plain wonderful singers. 5 stars*****.

  • Thanks for setting this clip on youtupe.

    Great song, great band..

And after 57 years still a beauty to hear..

  • I know why my dad thought these guys were the BEST!!!!

  • I hope these guys will continue to be heard by future generations and inspire young musicians to work hard at their craft and not leave it all up to "modern technology"!

  • Awesome ^^

  • Got to see them live 1974 at Disney World - still flawless then when I was seventeen. Love them still ! ! ! !

  • I've got a few of their albums and think they are the tops. This tune, "Paper Doll" and others are just fantastic.

  • Well done. They sing with an articulation you just don't hear anymore. Nice to hear some happy music.

  • I never would see myself listening to the oldies, I would listen to alternative/punk music, but boy..

I've been listening to this all day, I absolutely love it!

  • Glad I'm not the only one. ; )

  • my mom used to sing it to me when i was a baby

  • The Mills Bros. made it look smooth and effortless, but I wonder how many people know how hard it really is to sing like this? "Glow Worm"'s lyrics are a real tongue twister, too.

  • Great song not heard in ages.

  • I like this rendition so much that I put it on a tape to play in my car. Their harmony is the best.

    Doris

  • No doubt that they are, at the least, one of the greatest harmonizing groups of all time and THE greatest, at the most. Thanks for sharing, Max.

  • The MAGICAL, tight harmonic convergence is exeplified here in this very showcase, filled with flawless vocals and on the mark musical timing.

Many thanks for sharing this rarity with us.

    Peace,

    Max

  • Harry Mills.

  • I first heard about this song in an I Love Lucy episode. Man, the Mills Brothers are amazing!

  • I used to make my mother play this tape in the car an obscene amount in the car.. That and 'The Andrew Sisters' Christmas carol tape in, like, June. I must get this onto my Zune!!

  • Whoops, 'The Andrews Sisters' :)

  • We forgive you!

  • Mills Brothers, greatest vocal group of ALL TIME

  • without question, the greatest harmonizers of all time. No one could deliver a song like the fabulous Mills Brothers.

  • Love this song. The Mills brothers were before my time, but I've always thought that they were very very talented. Thanks for posting!

  • before my time too (i'm 24) but this song always makes me smile - they sound great!

you are equipped with tail light neon....hehe

  • GREAT !!!!!

  • love this song its one of my ring tones

    --

    Sent from my Helio Ocean

  • GOOD

  • I cant believe kids my age think this is crap

    THIS IS AWESOME!

    Swing baby SWAAAAAAAAANG!

  • Dude I am like 15 and I hate how ppl my age think this is shit.. now some people may call me shit but most of todays music is pure and utter over hyped shit that under-worked and over paid assholes make... ohh and to caler something up RAP IS FUCKING CURSING AND RHYMING

  • AMEN TO THAT

  • I dont think they think that. Why would they?

  • Love it... what a cool sound.

  • This is music on the highest level.

  • it's called a modulation

    Mills Bros kill me!

  • For anyone who's interested, I worked with my friend Brian Reingold and found that they start out in 'D Flat' and switch at "turn the key on" to "D Natural". (for those of us trying to learn the song)

  • OOPS SORRY I meant to press the 'thumbs up' and to my horror I hit the 'thumbs down'! I was very interested to hear about the chord change, now I will listen again and try to catch it! SOrry about the thumb!!

  • what a great bunch of guys!

  • It's been a long time since I listened to this...I also watched what my parents did every Saturday night...what memories...and my kids are calling this..crap....

  • It is definately not crap, it is better than some of the rap crap that is made now- a - days.

  • 'Some'??? There is aboslutely no rap music, that was, is, or ever will be as good as the Mills Brothers.

  • A classic lives on...where the hell are these guys today????!?!?!?!?!

  • THEY HAVE ALL GONE ON!

  • Only Donald's son sing.

  • class and talent - big time

  • I wish my generation acctually had some decent music really music has allways been good until now

  • Hi Joe, I think MILLS BROS got their start during a Musicians strike, and they just sang 4-part harmony, thereby not violating the strike. This is the only version I've seen on You Tube, but I think there were even more musical ones than this.... It will be interesting to see if anyone has them and puts them up.

  • I love it

  • I could sing this song all day long!!

  • I'm still glowing after listening to the wonderful Mills Brothers. Very grateful to my parents and our one TV. We watched what they watched and that's when my love for the Mills Brothers came to be. I love Jerry Lee Lewis music, but Glow Worm set my feet to stomping. Thanks for posting, SyberkaPL and thank you, Moxee33, for the words. It's so much fun to sing along.

  • That's neato! Thanks for sharing! :)

  • I love it! I only wish Nat had joined in.

  • Beautiful! x
