its also quite impressive to note that karlovic hung in there for so long, as a big guy like him, he has fatigue issues. but it seems he was fit enough to prolong this match. i think he gets better with age. hes starting to win some rare five setters now, like against blake (2 sets to 0 down) and got the revenge against stepanek at aussie open.
This isn't intended to be hostile, but while Stepanek isn't really known for any particular part of his game being spectacular, he's number 13 in the world. He's also a serve and volleyer.
He must have some serious mental toughness to do so well that way.
yeah winners flying off his racquet in rallies or vollies. they dont bode well for karlovic as he isnt capable of toe to toeing with that shit. but he did well to stretch the match for a long time with that serve.
@illogicalman21 Yeah but Karlovic also had 48 service winners in addition to the 78 aces. Stepanek only had like 18 aces so Karlovic had 30 more unreturnable serves.
Correlation does not imply causation. Learn statistics.
Karlovic served the greatest number of aces in one match in history. Does this mean Stepanek is terrible at moving on his return of serve? No, it means Karlovic is 6'10.
Stepanek does NOT have a good serve, nor even a consistent second serve. He routinely double faults. On top of this he is noted neither for his service speed nor his spin nor his placement. And this match was not some aberration where Stepanek served exceptionally well.
The ONLY factor that could be considered to amplify Stepanek's service winner total is Karlovic's above average reach, allowing him to tip serves that would typically be aces. However given the general average quality of Stepanek's serving, this isn't likely to contribute preponderantly.
I'm not saying Stepanek's serve was great; I'm only saying that there are other conclusions to draw from that stat other than that Karlovic has a weak return.
And, given the exceptionally high number of service winners, and that Stepanek's serving was not shown here, I think it's far more likely that Stepanek, while not noted for his serve, just happened to be having a good serving day.
If you knew anything about tennis, you'd know that as long as you hold serve, no matter how easily, return of serve is more important. Stepanek probably hit a lucky shot or two to get him that all-important break.
dude....someone should make one of the Isner match from Wimbledon....that would be nuts

its weird how his serve didn't crush stepaneks mental ability. cauzs stepanek isnt known as having the best mentality in the game.

In Davis cup he is known as big warrior.

yeah i suppose so. theyre both fucking up each others heads IMO, it was only a matter of time.

Also, Stepanek served as many service winners as Karlovic had aces. It amounted to the same thing.

Check out Stepanek's service winner stat. 78! Karlovic must have the world's shittiest return.

What a preposterous thing to say. Only if you were thinking within a bubble, could you make that assertion.
