I'm going to visit San Francisco in four weeks (around the time the 49ers will be in the postseason) and I plan on walking the Gate. Instead of jumping, I am going to watch carefully if someone will jump. If someone attempts, I'm going to call 911 from my cellular phone and maybe become a hero. I'll tell them as they enter the police car, 'Don't even think about trying it on the Bay Bridge or Coit Tower!'
In 1981 and 1982 I was a suicide rescuer at Coast Guard Motor-lifeboat Station Fort Point at the base of the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco, California; participating in 13 body retrievals and 3 survivor rescues. The drop from the roadway of the Golden Gate to the water in San Francisco Bay (depending on high or low tide) is an average of 245 feet. It takes 4 seconds to complete the fall and the rate of speed is 76 mph. Fatality percentage is 98%.
@jmata060200 as they hit the water they go maybe 20ft under from the speed impact and as the current is so strong they rarely resurface alive as they pulled along in the water and unable to rise , this isnt fact just would i would think
@sKewbrain I guess it's probably footage from security cameras which have been positioned as part of the suicide intervention programme on the bridge. clearly it's not always effective
@MrGhaxaal it's more about the impact of suicide . Listen to the guy who was just wind surfing and the guy jumped off the bridge right next to him almost hitting him.
I liked the documentary, but kept wondering if there have been more jumps there after the film was made, and another question; now that it is public knowledge how often people come to jump (and how easy and quick it is) why have the athorities not put up a a mesh fence making it somewhat more difficult to jump?

Does anybody know the name of the song that is playing in the background of the trailer? Perhaps it is just a piece that was put together just for the credits and trailer.
The movie where this theme is also used in features a man, in (i think) a basement, having flashbacks of his life, the simple things he enjoys the most, like the leaves falling down in autumn in his street or a brand new shiny sportscar (from himself or his brother), during the scene some of his friends/family are shown, the camera follows them, and they hear gunshots: the man got shot in the back of the head.
2:03 is probably the most eerie shot of this film IMO. Looks beautiful then you see that splash of water. I did not catch it the first time I saw the film.
@DeadKennedysNirvana8: Crazy... I was just about to write you and tell you that 2:03 was nothing, and then I saw that splash and it sent a chill through me. Crazy that you caught that. And I completely agree with you about that being hella eerie.
Although this was a good movie, it degrades the last moments of these people's lives. If I'm suicidal I wouldn't want to be captured on the frames of film of some guy's video camera.
I don't know, there's something majestic about a place like this, or say the Brooklyn Bridge. Though being in public has nothing to do with it, if you're ending your life it's just another location. I just wouldn't want my two hundred foot plunge to be apart of some snuff film for other people's enjoyment.
Then I'd suggest doing it in a more private place & way. I'm not being a jerk here but people in this frame of mind don't care. They were jumping in front of other passerby's on the bridge as well. If you're saying you wouldn't want to be degraded in your last few moment's of life, well that tells me you're in a good frame of mind, thinking rationally, and not suicidal. These people weren't thinking like you.
@darlingdino agreed. if you are genuinely suicidal, you do not think clearly about anything. People in such a severe state like that, just want to die, and they will do anything they can, anywhere they can, if they know it will be sucessful.
Now that you mention it... I think the music has a lot to do with overall impact of the film - it is beautiful all the way through, though the soundtrack has one or two choices that could have been better. Have you seen the movie?
I found this film strangely beautiful - I don't know why. Given the subject, I wouldn't blame anyone who hasn't seen it for thinking it would be a very distateful thing... but it is actually a collection of very compassionate and moving stories and certainly doesn't glamorize the issue. In fact I think more documentaries like this should be made.
i saw the movie and it was terribly depressing....the last person filmed jumping from the bridge is the most impressive of all....his death was so dramatic....its all very sad.
I think you're talking about the young man in black leather - Gene Sprague? The film is framed by his story without actually being about him in particular... I agree it's probably the most powerful of all the stories if only because his was the most enigmatic. I guess it also struck a chord with me because I know someone very similar to him.
I also found myself oddly taken with the chap who jumped and survived - as troubled as he was, I found him very likeable in a 'Donnie Darko' kind of way.
I just saw this movie last night...this was so strong, depressing and also somehow there is a kind of atraction to keep whatching it...and there is also some beautiful about it. The last Person to junp is really the most dramatic because we saw him strungling during all movie and when he finelly jumps he does it like flying! We have a similar bridge but u can´t cross it, so I think there is not many suicids per year.
would the people who jump die from the impact of hitting the water,or from sharks? they shouldn't allow people to walk across it alone, maybe ONLY special guided tours
Rachel, I think a person jumping from the bridge reaches about 75 mph by the time they hit the water. At that speed it's not much differernt to hitting concrete. The survivor interviewed in the film lived because he hit the water feet first, so he lost his energy more gradually than someone hitting in a random position.
at the speeds a human body is travelling when it hits the water, the initial shock that surface tension creates before the body even enters the water is considerably enough to scramble someone pretty badly. if you can break the surface tension in a streamlined manner, as in a dive head or feet first, or by dropping something before you enough to make a splash and dissipate surface tension, then survival is more likely.
Depression is a very sad disease. Its so hard to watch someone that feels so helpless so alone and so scared, that they think the only way out of the pain is to end their life. :( If you are watching this and feeling helpless...Please don't give up. People do love you. I love you.
@DAV1D281 For many years it was the avowed policy of the Golden Gate Bridge Authority to resist the installation of a net because they don't want the icon of San Francisco to become a formally acknowledged icon of suicide, instead. Then this documentary came out and, in October of 2008, the Board of Directors voted 14-1 to spend the funds necessary to install a net. You can find the story by googling 'Golden Gate to get Suicide Net' and look for the LA-Times story.
I am so drawn to this video. I have seen it and find it to be very tasteful for this difficult subject. Very respectful. No sugar coating, just people trying to understand. I told my friends that after this video, they should never take me anywhere near that bridge- I can relate so much. Life is hard.
when you jump down the bridge your going so fast that when you land on the water the first second if feels like hitting cement because your not let the particles going through your body and you probably break you bone
saw this movie over the weekend....hardest thing to watch. i ended up leaving the room 3 times because it was so incredibly hard to watch. from a film perspective however it is a great film...some great shots of the bridge and the area. i recommend it but also advise those to beware of what this is...suicide.
I once watched a Brittish documentary about the green color (or colour, if you may).
It said that by painting one of London's bridges (kind of famous for having people jumping from it in an attempt to kill themselves) with the color green, they managed to reduce the suicide rate 30%, if I recall correctly.
I happen to live in San Francisco and cannot believe it when I hear people saying that they are opposed to building a fence, or better yet, a net system UNDER the bridge, that would prevent 100% of the suicides that occur each year at the Golden Gate Bridge. I know there are a lot of seemingly good arguments about why we should not consider such an alternative.
But, for crying out loud, the people who commit suicide are mentally ill, and their illness is totally treatable. Why not spend such a small amount of $40 - $50 million (yeah that is a very small amount if you compare it to the $700 BILLION we're giving away to Wall Street companies, on top of the $200 Billion we already pumped into AIG) to build a net system that would not even change the historic significance of the bridge.
You think a fence will stop them?...think about it...if you feel your trapped inside a cage...you will do anything to get out of the cage...a fence wont stop you.
Just like most of you, I do believe that people have free will and that society should not interfere with their free will. But, again, these people are mentally ill, and their illness can be treated. But, they cannot be treated if we let them jump off the bridge. If we do let them, well, that's kind of like letting cancer patients die off because treating them would be costly...
Let me just put it this way, IF YOU KNEW THAT BUILDING A FENCE OR A NET SYSTEM UNDER THE GGB WOULD SAVE YOUR CHILD'S LIFE, WHAT WOULD YOU CHOOSE? WHAT DO YOU CHOOSE? Then go ahead and send an email to SF Mayor Gavin Newsom (apparently youtube does not allow us to post links, so please google Gavin Newsom and click on "Visit his personal website" then click on contact May Newsom.
The truth is most people who do talk about it eventually try. Suicidal Ideation & being suicidal are not the same.
Expressing your feelings is not "seeking attention." Acting on those feelings is not "selfish." Pain is pain be it physical or emotional. We come into the world with no choice. We should be able to choose when to leave.
The NIMH estimates that at least 25% of patients are not helped by meds or therapy. Death is inevitable. Forcing a person to live in pain is selfish.
Suicide hotlines are bullshit. If your thinking about suicide talk to family or friends or anyone remotely close to you. NOT some dumb ass over the phone who probably isnt qualified to give out advice like that.
You are wrong. Suicide hotlines save peoples lives everyday. I can say that they saved mine at least once. Sometimes your friends and family don't know what to say. The people on the hotlines often know what the resources are in your community - in terms of getting you counseling or services. If someone is in need of help, they should try EVERYTHING: Friends, family, doctors, hotlines, anything that works for them.
if your friends and family members dont know what do say then maybe they really dont care about you because all they have to say is that they love you and that theyll do whatever it takes to make you happy. its not that hard. maybe if you knew a little bit about general psychology you would know 90% of the time the person doesnt actually want to kill themselves and there just in a deep depression.
Clearly, you are NOT a Doctor and you are giving bad advise. For people who are struggling with mental illness - someone saying 'I love you' is generally not going to help them recover. Often, depression can be treated. Sometimes, it cannot be treated, and for those who are struggling I think they deserve compassion rather that your nasty ridicule. People who are thinking of suicide are NOT just being selfish, they are desperate and they are suffering.
and those people are called psychologist. however not everyone wants to get help, so what does the hotlines do about that? nothing. its a waste of money.
FroggieDuckie is right, medical professionals can listen to your problems without feeling emotionally involved or taking things personally, often, your parents or lovers take things personally. If you need medication, your family and friends cannot prescribe it for you either. Anyone who needs medical attention should seek medical attention.
your an idiot. some people, primaraly those who want to commit suicide, dont feel comfortable enough to talk to friends and family about that...probably one of the reasons they would want to commit suicide. your comment is rude and ignorant.
obviously you never thought about blowing your brains out because in fact those that do try to reach out to people and in fact when no one listens is when they jump of a cliff, my comments are the truth, go live in your fairly land, dumb prick
Well, I did try to blow my brains out long time ago. And what SlyPaws is saying was right in my case. I was too depressed to even talk about it with anyone. I hope I'm over that now. Most horrible period of my life.

Suicide is selfish act and those that talk about doing it usually just want attention. Its when a person isnt talking that you should be concerned. There for it is a stupid idea that these people would ask for help.
pls i have seen the movie and i wanna know the name of the ending son pls, when appear the credits, that song likeme so much, pls somebudy answerme Thanx
I haven't watch the film yet but intend to. My son jumped and you can't imagine the turmoil we the family are going through. We didn't know he needed help. We knew he was depressed but never suicidal.
this was the saddest thing i've ever watched but so enlightening to see that you see people on the street everyday and never may know where their head is at or their own personal struggle is.
I shot myself in the chest with a shotgun June 13, 1979 when I was 21. I'm glad I survived. If youre having thoughts about ending your life, email me, I know where you are. I mean really, I know.
does anyone know if i can get the soundtrack to this movie anywhere? i love the movie but the soundtrack is so haunting it was one of the best things 4 me. its the music @ the beginning of this trailer
I know a few people who are drawn to thoughts of suicide. "Most' of them suffer from some type of mental illness or depression and I think it's safe to say they aren't healthy people. Very tragic, but I've learned you can't help everybody.
I think what is most striking about this documentary is how many of them viewed their jump with pleasure. My favorite quote is "He felt trapped. That was the only way he could get free."
I cry when I think about how alone people feel in this world. How it fails to meet their expectations. How it really is an escape from their pain. This film just shoves it in your face. Something that needed to be done.
I had a friend(s) who jumped of the West Gate bridge in Melbourne Australia. They gave no reason and were young and healthy. It doesnt even have a pedestrian path but aparentley they have a few jumpers every week. Sorry but I dont think people are looking for a nice place to die. Once they make the choice they just want somewhere convenient.
I have yet to see this film... I lived in San Francisco in 2005/06 and lost a friend to the bridge! He was dying from brain cancer and took his life there. I wish I could have spoken to him one last time...
I think people choose to end their lives here is because it's just so accessible, you know? I just think they choose this spot because of the simplicity of it. I mean, thinking about suiciding means having to end your life, which sounds horrible. But I believe they chose this spot because it's such a beautiful place, and they don't want to end their lives in a dark, gloomy place.
I saw a bit of this movie, and the only thing I could think of was hoping that these people are in a peaceful place.. And absolutly not agree with people saying that suicide is egocentric, I find this a good documentairy, but I bet the people who jumped didn't want to have so much publicity over it, it's a shame that they keep filming and not call the emergency lines to make sure they don't jump and try to help them
Actually, we did call the authorities whenever it looked like someone was about to jump. I think if you saw the whole film you would realize that for so many people it is impossible to tell if they might jump until the actual moment that they do in fact jump.
Watched it the other night on more4 excellent movie although it deals with suicide,it never glorified it just dealt with the problems associated and dramatic footage of jumpers especially the guy Gene at the end you could'nt have made that scene, your more famous when your dead!!!
i haven't been moved like i was watching this film in a long, long time. and even though i knew how it would end - with gene, it still took my breath away when it finally happened - it still stunned me. this film is beautiful and sad and hypnotic and awe inspiring. thank you for making it.
well yeah in essence that is true... but its not neccesarily the drugs that do the damage in every case. i know people who have never been on those sorta drugs and comit suicide. while i admit the drugs may not be the best thing in every case its not the single factor in every case.
The people who jump don't jump after a bad day at work. It takes a serious mental illness that keeps the ill hopeless, isolated and unhappy. Most normal people couldn't bring themselves to end their lives.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
I'm Not Dissing AnyOne, So You Should Have Respect Me For Sharing SomeThing Personal. I Have Had Numerous Friends As Well As Personal Thoughts Lost To Suicide. So Please Don't Tell Me I Am Being Disrespectful When Your The One Searching Suicide Videos On YouTube.. .
"What could make a person want to do that?" "It happens all the time." Only the soul of the suicidal can understand. Where is the help? We build jails, but we don't build more crisis centers or psych hospitals. When did we become such a cold nation?
Actually, mental healthcare in America is mostly socialized. There are State Hospitals in every part of a state and networks like MHMR that provide medicine and so forth. I think the culture of suicide is more so based on our secularism and so forth. That is just one mans opinion though.
im sorry i just gota say that i just like the music and the sounds that it puts with the pictures im not all crazy about watching people kill themselves
If the government doesn't want to ruin the "beauty" of the bridge by installing suicide barriers they should at least install cameras and extra patrol men to prevent it from happenong as often as it does.
they have those stupid phone things. but "it happens all the time" i don't think these phones are working very well so they should at least build a higher fence

@ween275 I think the music was composed for the film.
Sarahharbin 1 year ago
No, it was used in another well known movie;

Although this was a good movie, it degrades the last moments of these people's lives. If I'm suicidal I wouldn't want to be captured on the frames of film of some guy's video camera.
DontBeAfraidToCare 2 years ago 3
then why do it in such a public place ?
robi2000 2 years ago 2
I don't know, there's something majestic about a place like this, or say the Brooklyn Bridge. Though being in public has nothing to do with it, if you're ending your life it's just another location. I just wouldn't want my two hundred foot plunge to be apart of some snuff film for other people's enjoyment.
DontBeAfraidToCare 2 years ago
Then I'd suggest doing it in a more private place & way. I'm not being a jerk here but people in this frame of mind don't care. They were jumping in front of other passerby's on the bridge as well. If you're saying you wouldn't want to be degraded in your last few moment's of life, well that tells me you're in a good frame of mind, thinking rationally, and not suicidal. These people weren't thinking like you.
darlingdino 2 years ago
@darlingdino agreed. if you are genuinely suicidal, you do not think clearly about anything. People in such a severe state like that, just want to die, and they will do anything they can, anywhere they can, if they know it will be sucessful.

Now that you mention it... I think the music has a lot to do with overall impact of the film - it is beautiful all the way through, though the soundtrack has one or two choices that could have been better. Have you seen the movie?
camilleri63 2 years ago
I found this film strangely beautiful - I don't know why. Given the subject, I wouldn't blame anyone who hasn't seen it for thinking it would be a very distateful thing... but it is actually a collection of very compassionate and moving stories and certainly doesn't glamorize the issue. In fact I think more documentaries like this should be made.
camilleri63 2 years ago 4
i totally agree with you. " strangely beautiful" is a really apt description- for someone who "get"s the allure of the bridge...
didigogoneworleans 2 years ago 2
i saw the movie and it was terribly depressing....the last person filmed jumping from the bridge is the most impressive of all....his death was so dramatic....its all very sad.
redsmooch989 2 years ago 3
I think you're talking about the young man in black leather - Gene Sprague? The film is framed by his story without actually being about him in particular... I agree it's probably the most powerful of all the stories if only because his was the most enigmatic. I guess it also struck a chord with me because I know someone very similar to him.
I also found myself oddly taken with the chap who jumped and survived - as troubled as he was, I found him very likeable in a 'Donnie Darko' kind of way.
camilleri63 2 years ago 3
I just saw this movie last night...this was so strong, depressing and also somehow there is a kind of atraction to keep whatching it...and there is also some beautiful about it. The last Person to junp is really the most dramatic because we saw him strungling during all movie and when he finelly jumps he does it like flying! We have a similar bridge but u can´t cross it, so I think there is not many suicids per year.
nacht98 2 years ago 3
would the people who jump die from the impact of hitting the water,or from sharks? they shouldn't allow people to walk across it alone, maybe ONLY special guided tours
rachellaughs 2 years ago
Rachel, I think a person jumping from the bridge reaches about 75 mph by the time they hit the water. At that speed it's not much differernt to hitting concrete. The survivor interviewed in the film lived because he hit the water feet first, so he lost his energy more gradually than someone hitting in a random position.
camilleri63 2 years ago
at the speeds a human body is travelling when it hits the water, the initial shock that surface tension creates before the body even enters the water is considerably enough to scramble someone pretty badly. if you can break the surface tension in a streamlined manner, as in a dive head or feet first, or by dropping something before you enough to make a splash and dissipate surface tension, then survival is more likely.

I once watched a Brittish documentary about the green color (or colour, if you may).
It said that by painting one of London's bridges (kind of famous for having people jumping from it in an attempt to kill themselves) with the color green, they managed to reduce the suicide rate 30%, if I recall correctly.
Just some food for thought.

I happen to live in San Francisco and cannot believe it when I hear people saying that they are opposed to building a fence, or better yet, a net system UNDER the bridge, that would prevent 100% of the suicides that occur each year at the Golden Gate Bridge. I know there are a lot of seemingly good arguments about why we should not consider such an alternative.
samiabusaad 3 years ago
But, for crying out loud, the people who commit suicide are mentally ill, and their illness is totally treatable. Why not spend such a small amount of $40 - $50 million (yeah that is a very small amount if you compare it to the $700 BILLION we're giving away to Wall Street companies, on top of the $200 Billion we already pumped into AIG) to build a net system that would not even change the historic significance of the bridge.
samiabusaad 3 years ago
You think a fence will stop them?...think about it...if you feel your trapped inside a cage...you will do anything to get out of the cage...a fence wont stop you.
blair9123 3 years ago 4
Just like most of you, I do believe that people have free will and that society should not interfere with their free will. But, again, these people are mentally ill, and their illness can be treated. But, they cannot be treated if we let them jump off the bridge. If we do let them, well, that's kind of like letting cancer patients die off because treating them would be costly...
samiabusaad 3 years ago 2

NOT some dumb ass over the phone who probably isnt qualified to give out advice like that.
blessthymaverick 3 years ago 2
You are wrong. Suicide hotlines save peoples lives everyday. I can say that they saved mine at least once. Sometimes your friends and family don't know what to say. The people on the hotlines often know what the resources are in your community - in terms of getting you counseling or services. If someone is in need of help, they should try EVERYTHING: Friends, family, doctors, hotlines, anything that works for them.
Sarahharbin 3 years ago
if your friends and family members dont know what do say then maybe they really dont care about you because all they have to say is that they love you and that theyll do whatever it takes to make you happy. its not that hard. maybe if you knew a little bit about general psychology you would know 90% of the time the person doesnt actually want to kill themselves and there just in a deep depression.
blessthymaverick 3 years ago
Clearly, you are NOT a Doctor and you are giving bad advise. For people who are struggling with mental illness - someone saying 'I love you' is generally not going to help them recover. Often, depression can be treated. Sometimes, it cannot be treated, and for those who are struggling I think they deserve compassion rather that your nasty ridicule. People who are thinking of suicide are NOT just being selfish, they are desperate and they are suffering.
Sarahharbin 3 years ago
Sometimes it's easier to talk to someone about your problems who doesn't know who you are.
Froggieduckie 3 years ago 3
and those people are called psychologist. however not everyone wants to get help, so what does the hotlines do about that? nothing. its a waste of money.
blessthymaverick 3 years ago
FroggieDuckie is right, medical professionals can listen to your problems without feeling emotionally involved or taking things personally, often, your parents or lovers take things personally. If you need medication, your family and friends cannot prescribe it for you either. Anyone who needs medical attention should seek medical attention.
Sarahharbin 3 years ago 2
your an idiot. some people, primaraly those who want to commit suicide, dont feel comfortable enough to talk to friends and family about that...probably one of the reasons they would want to commit suicide. your comment is rude and ignorant.

I don't know, that's just my opinion.
AnTiCs53 3 years ago
I saw a bit of this movie, and the only thing I could think of was hoping that these people are in a peaceful place.. And absolutly not agree with people saying that suicide is egocentric, I find this a good documentairy, but I bet the people who jumped didn't want to have so much publicity over it, it's a shame that they keep filming and not call the emergency lines to make sure they don't jump and try to help them
GabriellevB 4 years ago
Actually, we did call the authorities whenever it looked like someone was about to jump. I think if you saw the whole film you would realize that for so many people it is impossible to tell if they might jump until the actual moment that they do in fact jump.

Actually, mental healthcare in America is mostly socialized. There are State Hospitals in every part of a state and networks like MHMR that provide medicine and so forth. I think the culture of suicide is more so based on our secularism and so forth. That is just one mans opinion though.

If the government doesn't want to ruin the "beauty" of the bridge by installing suicide barriers they should at least install cameras and extra patrol men to prevent it from happenong as often as it does.

The bridge does have cameras and patrol men and they do stop many would-be jumpers.

well, if the statistics are as troubling as they seem, they need to increase patrol and cameras or contemplate new strategies to prevent it.
